    أي شيء فيها من الأسرار

    The songs pour out while I'm not at home

    What secrets could they possibly contain?

  2. أهو الوحي هابطا من علوّ

    أم هو السحر بين الآثار

    Is it revelation descending from the heavens?

    Or is it magic amongst the ruins?

  3. ما جمال يحس بالسمع الا

    كجمال يحس بالابصار

    No beauty perceived by hearing

    Like beauty perceived by sight

  4. رب صوت من الغناء رقيق

    طال عند استماعه استعباري

    Many a delicate singing voice

    Prolongs my enchantment when I hear it

  5. ولقد يملأ القلوب سرورا

    كبيوت يغرقن في الانوار

    And it may fill hearts with delight

    Like houses awash in light

  6. انه مطرب لكل الشياطين

    وكل الملائك الابرار

    It is the charmer of all demons

    And all pure angels

  7. حبذا ما في الشدو من كهرباء

    فعله في الاعصاب والدم سار

    How excellent is the electricity in singing

    Its effect on nerves and blood flows nicely

  8. ان خير الغناء ما كان يأتي

    عن شعور في غفلة الافكار

    The best singing arrives

    From feeling in the heedlessness of thoughts

  9. واذا لم يكن اتى عن شعور

    فهو غث من الطلاوة غار

    And if it doesn't arrive from feeling

    It is chaff devoid of sweetness, ruins

  10. هل شعور الفنان الاكسيل

    زاخر في واد بعيد القرار

    Does the feeling of the great artist

    Abound in a distant, calm valley?

  11. والاغاني اذا شجتك الاغاني

    غير امواج ذلك الزخار

    And if the songs shake you, the songs

    Are nothing but waves of that torrent

  12. واذا ما فاض الغناء تجيش النفس

    حتى كأنها في غمار

    And when singing overflows, the soul surges

    As if amidst a deluge

  13. وتظل الابصار شاخصة والسمع

    في لهفة الى التكرار

    And sights remain fixed while hearing

    Yearns for repetition

  14. وكأنا نراه بالسمع منا

    وكأنا نصيخ بالابصار

    It's as if we see it through hearing

    And call out through sight

  15. وكأن الزمان يذهب نسيا

    وكأن المكان اجمع وار

    And it's as if time goes by forgetfully

    And place, altogether shy

  16. تحسب النفس عنده انها في

    عالم غير عالم الاوزار

    The soul feels with it that it is in

    A world other than that of burdens

  17. عالم لاعداء فيه ولا حقد

    ولا رغبة باخذ الثار

    A world without enemies or rancor

    Or desire for vengeance

  18. ارسل الطرف في الجماهير تبصر

    ماله في الوجوه من آثار

    Send your gaze into the crowds and you see

    What traces lie on the faces

  19. طالما هاجت السرور او

    الاشجان اغنية على قيثار

    How often joy or

    Sorrow stirred a song on the lyre

  20. هي نار مشبوبة يتصبى

    سامعيه حسيس تلك النار

    It is kindled fire whose listeners

    Imbibe the heat of that fire

  21. ينكأ الجرح من يغني ويأسو

    كطبيب بموقع الداء دار

    He who sings rips open the wound

    Like a doctor probing the seat of pain

  22. ظفر الروض بالهزار اخيرا

    بعد طول انتظاره للهزار

    The garden attained playfulness at last

    After long awaiting playfulness

  23. جاءه طائرا فلما تغنى

    اكبرته جماعة الاطيار

    It came to him like a bird, so when it sang

    The birds enlarged it

  24. سمعته وعندما سمعته

    خرجت اعجابا من الاوكار

    I heard it and when I heard it

    I came out in wonder from the dens

  25. تتوالى اغرودة بعد اخرى

    كانفجار يأتي وراء انفجار

    One warble follows another

    Like eruption coming after eruption

  26. ولقد سر السامعين حوار

    بينه في الهوى وبين القماري

    And the listeners were gladdened by a

    Dialogue between it and the singer

  27. وكأن الازهار في الروض آذا

    ن تفتحن لاستماع الحوار

    As if the flowers in the garden

    When listening to the dialogue

  28. اجمع الشعب في العراق على التر

    حيب بالعبقري والاكبار

    All the people in Iraq agree

    On congratulating the genius and greats

  29. بامير الغناء من شهدت آ

    يات الحانه له باقتدار

    The prince of song, whose musical

    Miracles attest to his power

  30. ولو ان الاسماع كانت عيونا

    لراتها لماعة كالدراري

    And if hearings were eyes

    They would see a vision like miracles

  31. اسمعوا من محمد شدوه

    فهو امام في فنه ذو ابتكار

    Hear from Muhammad his singing

    For he is foremost in his art of innovation

  32. انه خير من تغنى فاشجي

    سامعيه وخير موسيقار

    He is better than any who sings and stirs

    His listeners, the best composer

  33. يرفع الصوت جاهرا ثم يلقي

    هامسا ما يلقى الى الاوتار

    He raises his voice loudly, then whispers gently

    What he whispers to the strings

  34. كثر الناشؤون في كل فن

    غير ان الكفاة غير كثار

    Many are novice in every art

    But the competent are few

  35. حسبه في زعامة الفن ما قد

    حازه من ذيعوعة واشتهار

    His fame and popularity are enough

    For his leadership of the art

  36. انجبته مصر وكم انجبت مصر

    رجالا عادوا لها بالفخار

    Egypt bore him, and how many men

    Egypt bore who returned her glory

  37. لست اخشى بوار تلك الاغاني

    انها للخلود لا للبوار

    I fear not the demise of those songs

    For they are for eternity, not demise

  38. نغمات اودعتها كل اشجا

    نك تغلي فآذنت بانفجار

    I deposited in them all your sorrows

    So they seethed and signaled eruption

  39. انت فيها نفخت من روحك الدا

    مي فجاءت كالنار ذات الاوار

    You breathed your eternal spirit into them

    And they came like flaming infernos

  40. فهي تحكي انات قلب كليم

    جاء يشكو جور الزمان الضاري

    They tell the woes of a wretched heart

    Come complaining of the cruel time

  41. وهي تحكي رنات ثكلى اصيبت

    بوحيد لها كضوء النهار

    And they tell the sighs of a bereaved woman

    Struck by the loss of her only light like day

  42. كان فينا استماعها منك يوما

    وطرا حافزا من الاوطار

    Listening to you sing them was a pleasure

    And a gentle flight of birds

  43. وصبونا الى اللقاء ولكن

    حال دون اللقاء شحط المزار

    We yearned for a meeting but

    Our wretched fate prevented meeting

  44. ثم لما هبطت بغداد رحبنا

    ثبات بالكوكب السيار

    Then Baghdad fell, so we welcomed

    The wanderer planet

  45. ثم لما انفجرت تشدو ثملنا

    كالذي اسكرته كأس العقار

    Then when you burst into song, we swayed

    Like one intoxicated by a drink

  46. ولقد كان صوتك العذب قبلا

    في الفتغراف مالئا كل دار

    Your sweet voice was once

    Flooding every house from the phonograph

  47. فاذا ما رفعت في مصر صوتا

    رددته بقية الامصار

    And whenever you raised your voice in Egypt

    The rest of the cities reiterated

  48. يرفع السباقين ان لهم في

    كل شوط براءة من عثار

    Each surpasses the other, for theirs is

    Innocence from stumbling in every endeavor

  49. يا امير الغناء ايه فانا

    قد فتنا بفنك السحار

    O prince of song, yes, for we

    Are infatuated by your magic art

  50. يا امير الغناء انك منا

    لجدير بالحمد والاكبار

    O prince of song, you are to us

    Worthy of praise and magnificence

  51. هز لحن به شدوت مجيدا

    كل ما للقلوب من اوتار

    Strum a tune that stirs your excellent

    Singing, all the heart's strings

  52. ان من لا يهزه منك لحن

    حجر جامد من الاحجار

    Whom your tune doesn't stir

    Is hardened rock among rocks
