1. يا موطنا قد ذبت فيه غراما

    أهدي إليك تحية وسلاما

    O my homeland, for which I have passionately yearned

    I send you greetings and peace

  2. لولاك لم اك في الوجود ولم اشم

    بلج الصباح واسمع الانغاما

    Without you I would not exist nor would I smell

    The scent of dawn or hear melodies

  3. افديك من وطن نشأت بارضه

    ومرحت فيه يافعا وغلاما

    I would sacrifice myself for the homeland where I was raised

    And frolicked there as a youth and a boy

  4. ما كنت الا روضة مطلولة

    تحوي الورود وتفتق الاكماما

    It was but a garden filled with roses

    That contained flowers and buds just beginning to bloom

  5. غازلت منها في الغدو بنفسجا

    وشممت منها في الاصيل خزاما

    In the mornings I would pick violets from it

    And at night I would smell the fragrance of flowers

  6. وسعدت العب فوق ارضك ناشئا

    وشقيت شيخا لا يطيق قياما

    I was happy playing in your land as a youth

    And suffered as an old man unable to stand

  7. لك قد غضبت وفي رضاك حملت ان

    تنتابني نوب الزمان جساما

    For you I was angry and in your satisfaction I bore

    The blows of time that afflicted me

  8. وسمعت من ناس شرير طبعهم

    كلماً على نفسي وقعن سهاما

    And I heard from evil-natured people

    Words about myself that stung like arrows

  9. لي فيك يا وطني الذي قد ملني

    حب يواري في الرماد ضراما

    For you, my homeland, which wearied me

    Is a love that smolders in embers

  10. اما المنى فقد انتهت ومضاتها

    الا بصيصا لا يزيل ظلاما

    As for desires, their flashes have ended

    Except for a ray that does not dispel the darkness

  11. من ثقفته الحادثات ملمة

    يلقى الخطوب بصدره بساما

    One who is taught by events is wise

    And meets misfortunes with steadfastness

  12. كبر الألى من طيب اعراق لهم

    كانوا اذا لؤم السفيه كراما

    Noble are those whose lineage is pure

    When insulted by fools, they are generous

  13. انا للافاعي غير مكترث وان

    تركت بنفسي نابها آلاما

    To snakes I pay no mind, even if

    They leave their mark of pain within me

  14. بالذل لا ارضى وان سلمت به

    روحي وارضى بالحمام زؤاما

    I will not accept humiliation, even if

    I must make peace with it and be patient

  15. حي الذين اذا الهوان اصابهم

    تخذوا الاباء من الهوان عصاما

    Long live those who when disgraced

    Take sticks to drive away disgrace

  16. يا حامل الصمصام لا يحمى به

    حقا لماذا تحمل الصمصاما

    O carrier of swords, they cannot protect

    A right, so why carry swords?

  17. ما في المساواة التي نشدو بها

    ان الوهاد تطاول الآكاما

    What is this equality they cry for?

    When the lowly overtake the lofty

  18. يا قومنا لا نفع في أحلامكم

    فخذوا الحقائق وانبذوا الاحلاما

    My people, your dreams are fruitless

    Take realities and cast off dreams

  19. اخشى عليكم في الحياة تدهورا

    فيه الرؤوس تقبل الاقداما

    I fear for you a deterioration in life

    Where feet take the place of heads

  20. جهل الذين على قديم عولوا

    ان الزمان يغير الاحكاما

    Ignorant are those who depend on the past

    For time changes laws

  21. واشد خلق الله جهلا امة

    نقضت فظنت نقضها ابراما

    Most ignorant are those who

    Broke their covenant and thought they dissolved it

  22. ولربما اطرى افاعيلا له

    كانت اذا استقرأتها آثاما

    And perhaps a snake charmer charms

    What would be sins if closely examined

  23. لا يستطيع بناء مجد صادق

    من لا يكون لكاذب هداما

    No one can build honest glory

    Unless he first destroys what is false

  24. هل يخرق العادات فيما جاءه

    الا جريئي لا يخاف ملاما

    Can one defy norms unless he is

    Bold and does not fear blame?

  25. أاذا نجحت حمدت نفسك مطريا

    واذا فشلت تعاتب الاياما

    If you succeed you praise yourself, heavens' gift

    And if you fail, you blame the days

  26. ان الحياة وغى وقد ينبو بها

    سيف الشجاع ولا يكون كهاما

    Life is illusion, and the sword of the brave

    Dispels this without being dull

  27. ولرب حرب تختفي ابطالها

    تحت الستار ولا تثير قتاما

    Many wars, their heroes disappear

    Behind the curtain without stirring conflict

  28. ذم التعصب في الجدال فانه

    سقم يجر وراءه اسقاما

    Condemn bigotry in debate, for it

    Is a sickness that spreads to others

  29. ما انت الا ذرة منسية

    في بقعة من عالم يترامى

    You are but a forgotten particle

    In a spot in an endless universe

  30. كون تحركه نواميس له

    كانت له منذ القديم لزاما

    Whose motion is governed by laws

    That have always been binding

  31. تشكو به الايام مثلك اسرها

    فمن السخافة لومك الاياما

    The days complain of their captivity like you

    So it is foolish to blame the days

  32. فيه الشموس كثيرة فمن الذي

    في البدء اضرم نارها اضراما

    In it are many suns, so who

    First ignited their fires in the beginning?

  33. من يحسب الاوهام منه حقائقا

    يجد الحقائق كلها اوهاما

    Whoever takes imaginations as facts

    Will find all facts to be imaginations

  34. او كان من داء به يصدى فقد

    يرد الخضم ولا يبل اواما

    Or he has an illness that makes him doubt

    So he rejects the judgment and does not understand

  35. لا ينكر الحق المبين سوى امرئ

    يعمى وشر منه من يتعامى

    None deny obvious truth but one

    Blinded, and worse is one who feigns blindness

  36. ولقد يكون الفوز حلفا للألى

    غمدوا السيوف وجردوا الاقلاما

    And victory may well favor those

    Who sheathed their swords and drew their pens

  37. كم ريشة في كف اروع بددت

    جيشا تدجج بالحديد لهاما

    How many feathers in the hand of the finest

    Have routed an armored army

  38. ظن ابن آوى انه اسد الشرى

    حتى اذا لقي الهزبر تحامى

    The fox thought itself the lion of the thicket

    Until it met the formidable hyena

  39. لا تسخرن فلابن آوى عذره

    ان لا يكون القسور الضرغاما

    Do not mock the fox for it is understandable

    That it is not the roaring mighty lion

  40. ولقد جعلت لي الطبيعة قدوة

    وتخذت منها في الحياة اماما

    Nature made me an example

    Which I took as guide in life

  41. ما ان اروم وان رجتني رغبة

    ما ليس يمكن ان يكون مراما

    If ambition stirs me toward

    What cannot be attained, I resist

  42. السيل اما عب مندفعاً فلا

    يدع الوهاد ويغمر الآكاما

    The torrent either flows rapidly so it leaves

    No oasis and covers the highlands

  43. ولقد اقول الشعر منفعلا به

    ولقد انبه بالقريض نياما

    I write poetry emotionally moved by it

    Though sometimes I doze while composing

  44. بسمت بنات الشعر حين شببن لي

    فقطمتهن فما اردن فطاما

    The daughters of poetry smiled alluringly

    But I weaned them, though they did not wish it

  45. اسفي على الادب الذي يبغون ان

    يكسوه من عصر خلا اهداما

    I regret the literature they want

    To dress in a past age's ruins

  46. اخذت تنغص راحتي ضوضاؤهم

    من غير ان يلقى الجدال نظاما

    Their clamor began to disturb me

    Without debate being orderly

  47. فوددت لو ان الذين تجادلوا

    جعلوا الوفاق على الصواب ختاما

    So I wished those arguing

    Would make agreement on truth the conclusion

  48. انا لا احب سوى مكان هادئ

    اما الزحام فلا اريد زحاما

    I love only a quiet place

    As for crowds, I do not want crowds
