1. فقدت مصر فهي سكرى المآقي

    كوكبا في سمائها ذا ائتلاق

    Egypt has lost its sweetness of sorrows,

    A shining star in its skies,

  2. كوكبا كان يرسل الشعر نورا

    ثم يرمي به على الآفاق

    A star that used to send poetry as light,

    Then cast it upon the horizons.

  3. خر من جوه الرفيع صريعا

    لا السنى يحميه ولا الشعر واق

    It fell from its lofty spirit a martyr,

    Protected neither by years nor poetry.

  4. ايها الكوكب انطفأت بليل

    بغتة بعد ذلك الاشراق

    O star, you were extinguished suddenly at night,

    After that radiance.

  5. ايها الليل هل وراءك صبح

    مؤذن بعد ريثه بانفلاق

    O night, is there a dawn after you

    That heralds a splitting with its call to prayer?

  6. فجعت مصر بابنها البر شوقي

    فهي ثكلى كثيرة التشهاق

    Egypt mourns its virtuous son Shoukry,

    So it is a bereaved woman, yearning much.

  7. صب يشوي على العراق شواظا

    رزء مصر ومصر اخت العراق

    A misfortune that scorches Iraq,

    The calamity of Egypt and Egypt the sister of Iraq.

  8. كان روض وكان زهر وصدا

    ح فما منها اليوم شيء باق

    He was a meadow and was a flower and a voice,

    But today none of these remain.

  9. ايها الروض انك اليوم اورا

    ق تهاوى سفعاً على اوراق

    O meadow, today you are but naked earth

    Collapsing into fragments upon leaves.

  10. يوم صاح النعي قلت له تباً فما

    هذا منك غير اختلاق

    The day his death was announced, I said "shame,"

    This is nothing but fiction from you.

  11. ثم لما ادل اطرقت حتى

    مل شمس النهار من اطراقي

    Then when it was confirmed, I hung my head until

    The sun of day was eclipsed by my submission.

  12. فلقد كنا شاعرين على ما

    بيننا من تفاوت الاذواق

    Indeed we were two poets despite

    The differences in our tastes.

  13. ايها الموت مالنا منك بد

    كلنا هالك وانت الباقي

    O death, we have no escape from you,

    All of us perish while you remain.

  14. ايها الموت انت آخر سهم

    من سهام لها الحياة تلاقى

    O death, you are the last arrow

    That the life has to face.

  15. ايها الموت قد خطفت كذئب

    واحدا بعد واحد من رفاقي

    O death, you have snatched them one by one

    My companions, forcibly without farewell.

  16. ذهبوا مكرهين من غير عود

    وقريب بالذاهبين لحاقي

    They left unwillingly without a promise to return

    And I will soon join the departed.

  17. انت كف القضاء تضرب من شا

    ء وسيف القضاء في الاعناق

    You are the fist of fate that strikes whoever it wants

    And the sword of fate at the necks.

  18. غلت بالامس حافظا وبشوقي

    اليوم انشبت الظفر للالحاق

    Yesterday you took Hafiz and today Shoukry,

    Your claws now move to catch up.

  19. احتججنا لما عصفت بشوقي

    انا والشعر والهوى باتفاق

    We protested when you swept Shoukry away -

    I, poetry, and passion in agreement.

  20. بعد شوقي يا لهف نفسي عليه

    اخفق الشعر ايما اخفاق

    After Shoukry, oh how my soul yearns for him,

    Poetry has faltered in ways never known.

  21. لا ترى اليوم منه الا رمادا

    بعد نار من الشعور حراق

    Today one sees of it only ashes

    After a burning fire of feelings.

  22. سرت تنأى فما تركت على الاخلاق

    عينا يا شاعر الاخلاق

    You went away to become distant after leaving

    No eye, O poet of ethics, on morals.

  23. كان هذا الذي به كنت تشدو

    بعض دقات قلبك الخفاق

    This that you used to sing of

    Were some beats of your passionate heart.

  24. تلك انفاس منك تصعد حرى

    وانين يأتي من الاعماق

    Those were breaths rising from you,

    Laments coming from the depths.

  25. كل ما قلته لئالئ الا

    انها لا تباع في الاسواق

    All that you said were pearls

    That cannot be sold in markets.

  26. وسيبقى على الزمان جديدا

    ادب صنته من الأخلاق

    And they will remain fresh to the ages -

    Literature whose ethics you protected.

  27. انت ما ان فارقتنا لمعاد

    نتسلى به زمان الفراق

    You left us nothing to console ourselves with

    During the time of your absence.

  28. انت ما كنت بالحمام خليقاً

    فيوافيك آخذاً بالخناق

    You were not suited, peacefully,

    To meet him grabbing you by the throat.

  29. ايها الراقد الكريم بقبر

    لك مما في قبرك الله واق

    O noble one lying in a grave

    God will protect what is in your grave.

  30. لك قد ذابت القلوب اسى ثم جرت

    ادمعاً من الآماق

    For you hearts have melted in sorrow and then flowed

    As tears from the eyelids and eyelashes.

  31. كنت ترتاب في فاسمع انيني اليوم

    حزنا عليك واسمع شهاقي

    My father your face has now withered

    Under what earth has covered.

  32. بابي ذاك الوجه قد بات يذوي

    تحت ما للثرى من الاطباق

    I have nothing to generously gift you

    Except my poetry and pouring tears.

  33. ليس لي ما اهدى اليك سخياً

    غير شعري ودمعي المهراق

    You are for eternity through what

    You left people of fine poetry.

  34. انما انت للخلود بما

    ابقيت للناس من قريض راق

    You are mortal while your memory endures

    You are a body that decays and a lasting renown.

  35. انت فان وخالد في زمان

    انت جسم يبلى وذكر باق

    You are to Egypt like a teardrop of bereavement

    Between the eyelid and eyelashes.

  36. انت من مصر مثل دمعة ثكلى

    بين اهداب العين والحملاق

    Whenever you cast poetry in Egypt

    Its echo rang out to the horizons.

  37. كنت إما القيت في مصر شعراً

    رنّ يرغو صداه في الآفاق

    You crafted rare meaning in the best phrase

    By which my listening is sweetened and context improved.

  38. تسبك المعنى البكر في خير لفظ

    فبه يحلولي وخير سياق

    You did not attain anything of the message

    Except the passions of your throbbing heart.

  39. لم تبلغ من الرسالة شيئاً

    غير الهام قلبك الخفاق

    Every living being, his day will come

    When he meets what he is to meet.

  40. كل حي فأنما هو يوما

    سيلاقي من الردى ما يلاقي

    Every ailment, it is to hunt the soul from us -

    A kind of tribulation.

  41. كل داء فانه لاصطياد الروح منا

    ضرب من الاوها

    The body refused to part from the soul, so it said "Do not fear my separation."

    I, O body, do not roam except over you

  42. قد ابى الجسم تفارقه الرو

    ح فقالت لا تخشين فراقي

    When you are freed from my ties.

    Then the agony of separation came, so they parted

  43. انا يا جسم لا اطوف على غيرك

    فيما اذا فككت وثاقي

    After a farewell embrace and kiss.

    Then they wanted reunion but there death was

  44. ثم حم الفراق فافترقا بعد

    وداع برح وبعد عناق

    A separation after which there is no reunion.

    Lord, he is in a grave in which echoes life

  45. ثم راما تلاقيا واذا الموت

    فراق ما بعده من تلاق

    To be watered from pouring rain.

    And you had hoped in your poetry

  46. رب قبر به صدى الحياة لي

    يروى من وابل غيداق

    To attain what is proper from rights.

    The pulse of poetry in what

  47. ولقد كنت في قريضك ترجو

    ما لحق اهين من احقاق

    Egypt needed from compassion.

    A poet, that you would be the first

  48. نبض الشعر من فيما اليه

    مصر كانت تحتاج من اشفاق

    To weep in it the politics of oppression.

    You were a vigilant shepherd,

  49. شاعراً ان تكون اول من يد

    مع فيها سياسة الارهاق

    More resolute than sharp swords.

    Through you the emirate of poetry gloated

  50. فلقد كنت ذا يراع ذليق

    هو امضى من السيوف الرقاق

    Since you assumed it rightfully.

    How many horses raced in the track

  51. بك كانت امارة الشعر تزهو

    مذ تقلدتها بالاستحقاق

    And let us take the course to race.

    My words do not tire if they elegize you

  52. رب خيل ركضن في حلبة السبق

    فخلين الدرب للسباق

    After being fresh leaves.

    How many beauties time allowed to bloom and then

  53. لا تعب الفاظي اذا هي رثت

    بعد ان كانت غضة الاوراق

    Appeared in a dress befitting them.

    Grief over you overwhelmed me until

  54. رب حسناء سلمها الدهر فقرا

    فبدت في ثوب لها إخلاق

    My range of what to say of you narrowed.

    And if poetry falls short, my tears for you

  55. ساورتني بك الرزية حتى

    ضاق عما اقول فيك نطاقي

    Will suffice when pouring out.

    What I composed in eulogy for you

  56. واذا قصرّ القريض فدمعي

    لك يغني عنه لدى الاهراق

    Was no purer than my streaming tears.

    Sleep far in the depths of your grave, away

  57. لم يكن ما نظمته من رثاء

    لك اصفى من دمعي الرقراق

    From he who would trouble you.

    Forget your days in which you used to

  58. نم بعيداً في جوف قبرك عمن

    يتصدى اليك بالاقلاق

    Savor life in a full cup.

    Forget what you left of lofty palaces,

  59. وانس ايامك التي كنت فيها

    تتملى الحياة في كأس ساق

    Tall, faithful, and fine necks.

    This grave is your last house,

  60. انس ما قد خلفته من قصور

    شاهقات توفى ومن اعلاق

    O owner of towering layered homes.

    If arrows strike me in old age,

  61. انما هذا القبر آخر بيت

    لك يا مالك القصور الطباق

    It was not intentional for me to loose them.

    Rather, during their course they may meet

  62. ان اناتي في المشيب سهام

    لم يكن عن قصد لها اطلاقي

    A fleeing target or they may not meet any.

    Regret over me for the fertile nights

  63. فهي اثناء سيرها قد تلاقي

    غرضا نازحاً وقد لا تلاقي

    And fear of remaining nights.

    None berates life except a group

  64. حسرة لي على الليالي المواضي

    وتخش من الليالي البواقي

    Who have no share in its creation.

    We suckled its most exquisite wine for days

  65. لا يذم الحياة الا فريق

    ما لهم من لذاتها من خلاق

    And it was delicious in taste.

    We took from luxury a share

  66. قد رضعنا منها الافاويق ايا

    ماً فكانت لذيذة في المذاق

    And drank purpose in a overflowing cup.

    Youth, oh youth, it equals

  67. واخذنا من الرفاهة حظاً

    وشربنا المنى بكأس دهاق

    All that is in life of pleasures.

    I do not think souls accept captivity

  68. الشباب الشباب فهو يساوي

    كل ما في الحياة من اذواق

    After freedom and release for them.

    Although association in it is little

  69. لا اظن الارواح تقبل اسراً

    بعد حرية لها وانطلاق

    It is a world abundant in lovers.

  70. غير ان الدنيا وان قل منها

    الوصل دنيا كثيرة العشاق
