أنا فيما أبديته من مقال

مخطئ ليس لي أقل استناد

In what I have uttered of speech

I am mistaken, I have no less reliance

شهد اللَه والملائكة الأبرار

أني ركبت غير السداد

God and the righteous angels bear witness

That I have embarked without right guidance

إنني قد أسأت ظني وربي

واقف للمسيء بالمرصاد

Indeed I have thought ill of my Lord

While He stands in waiting to ambush the sinner

إنني قد ندمت غفرانك اللهم

من سوء مذهبي واعتقادي

Indeed I regret - may You forgive me, O God -

My misguided doctrine and belief

عن سبيل الرشد حدت فارجعني

إلهي إلى سبيل الرشاد

From the path of righteousness I strayed, so return me

My God, to the path of guidance

إنني قد زرعت إثماً فويلي

ثم ويلي إن حان يوم الحصاد

Indeed I have sown sin, so woe to me

Then woe to me if the day of harvest comes

ويح نفسي فقد سلكت طريقاً

ليس فيه إلى الحقيقة هادي

Woe to my soul, for I have walked a path

In which there is no guide to the truth

ويح نفسي من روع يوم التقاضي

ويح نفسي من هول يوم التنادي

Woe to my soul from the terror of the day of judgement

Woe to my soul from the horror of the day of calling

سوف أبكي ملء العيون على ما

قلت حتى يبل دمعي نجادي

I will cry my eyes out over what

I have said until my tears flood the streams

سوف أبكي على حياتي وأبكي

من زمان قضيت في بغداد

I will cry over my life and I will cry

Over the time I spent in Baghdad
