قد تعذبت في العراق كثيرا

كنت في جنة اقاسي سعيرا

I have suffered much in Iraq

I was in a paradise enduring hellfire

والذي فيه قد اطال عذابي

كان خصما على عذابي قديرا

And the one who prolonged my torment

Was capable of increasing my suffering

أي عدل يجيئ ممن يرى العذ

ل لحقد في نفسه ان يجورا

What justice comes from one who sees hardship

As hatred in his soul to oppress

لم يكن لي ذنب سوى انني رم

ت بشعري لامة تحريرا

My only crime was that I threw

My poetry to a nation seeking liberation

قد يخون الحياة من كان حراً

بيديه ولا يخون الضميرا

One who is free may betray life

But does not betray conscience

حجروا العقل في الذين لهم عق

ل ولم يتركوا له تفكيرا

They shackled the mind in those who have a mind

And left them no thought

ضربوا بالسيف الذي ارهفوه

عندنا البرلمان والدستورا

They struck with the sword they had sharpened

Among us, parliament and constitution

ساسة الشرق حيث كانوا فريق

ليس فيهم من يحسن التدبيرا

The politicians of the East where they were a band

Among them none knew how to manage affairs

يأكلون الطعام اكلا ذريعا

ثم يشكون بطنة وزحيرا

They eat food voraciously

Then complain of indigestion and heartburn
