في الغرب حيث كلا الجنسين يشتغل
لا يفضل المرأة المقدامة الرجل
In the West where both genders work
Woman is not preferred over courageous man
كلا القرينين معتز بصاحبه
عليه ان نال منه العجز يتكل
Both mates are proud of each other
If weakness afflicts him, he depends on her
وكل جنس له نقص بمفرده
اما الحياة فبالجنسين تكتمل
And each gender is imperfect alone
While with both genders life is complete
بيت نظيف واولاد قد ازدهروا
كأنهم زهر في الروض تنتقل
A clean house and flourishing children
Like flowers blossoming in a meadow
والبيت فيه نظام حين تبصره
وانه لنظام ما به خلل
And the house is orderly when you see it
It is a system without flaw
تبقى المودة حتى الموت بينهما
فما هنالك شنآن ولا ملل
Love remains between them until death
There is no rancor or boredom
وانما غاية الزوجين واحدة
وان تعددت الاسباب والسبل
The goal of the couple is one
Though the causes and paths are many
وقد يطلقها او قد تطلقه
اذا قضى بالطلاق الكره والملل
He may divorce her or she may divorce him
If hatred and boredom decree divorce
اما العراق ففيه الامر مختلف
فقد المّ بنصف الامة الشلل
But Iraq is different in this regard
Half the nation is afflicted by paralysis
ومن تزوج لا عن خبرة سبقت
فانما خطبه في داره جلل
He who marries without prior experience
His wedding in his house is marked by anxiety
وقد يعالج هما لا يزايله
حتى يموت وجرحا ليس يندمل
He suffers an incurable affliction
Until he dies with unhealed wounds
وقد يطلقها في حانة ثملا
وليس تدري لماذا طلق الثمل
He may divorce her drunk
Unaware why the drunk divorced
في البيت بعد وفاق في الهوى دعة
وفيه بعد خلاف في الهوى جدل
After harmony at home there is calm
After conflict at home there is heated debate
اعزز فتاتك واخطب عن معاشرة
بريئة ولامّ الناقد الهبل
Honor your girl and court with
Innocent socialization, and blame not the confused critic
كم قد تزوج ذو الستين يافعة
والشيب في رأسه كالنار يشتعل
Many a sixty year old married a young woman
While the white hair on his head blazed like fire
يقضى لبانته منها الى اجل
وقد يكون قصيرا ذلك الاجل
He spends his vigor on her to his last breath
And that breath may be short
ولا يبالي بحبل الود بعدئذ
أكان متصلاً ام ليس يتصل
He cares not for the bond of affection afterward
Whether connected or not
تزوجت وهي لا تدري لشقوتها
أزوجها احد الغيلان ام رجل
She married unaware of her misfortune
Did one of the young rascals or a man marry her?
يسبها لا لذنب ثم يركلها
بالرجل منه مهينا وهي تحتمل
He insults her not for a sin then kicks her
Degradingly with his foot while she bears it
وبعد ذلك يعدو كالنعام الى
اصحابه وهو مما جاءه جذل
Then he dashes like an ostrich to
His friends and boasts of what he did
يروي لهم كيف ابكاها وآلمها
كأنه في ميادين الوغى بطل
He tells them how he made her cry and hurt her
As if he was a hero in battle
ولم تكن اربع يشبعن نهمته
والذئب يشبعه من جوعه حمل
Not even four would satisfy his gluttony
While a wolf sates his hunger with a lamb
لا تحسبن كل من قد سار مهتديا
وكل من كان معوجا سيعتدل
Do not assume all who walk upright are guided
Or all the crooked will straighten
القوم ان واجهوا اعداءهم جبنوا
والقوم ان قابلوا ازواجهم بسلوا
The people when facing enemies are cowards
The people when facing wives are tamed
الى السماء العيون النجل شاخصة
ماذا ترى في السماء الاعين النجل
Eyes raise pleadingly to the sky
What do those pleading eyes see in the sky?
وددت من كل قلبي غير مختشع
لو عاد يوما على اعقابه الازل
I wish with all my heart without pretense
If only time in its course would go backwards
فاسأل اللَه تقديرا يغير ما
قضاه قبلا فلا ظلم ولا دخل
So ask God to decree a change from what
He previously ordained, for no injustice or fault is in it
جاؤوا قبيحا وسبوا من يعارضهم
فيه الا بئس ما قالوا وما فعلوا
They came ugly and insulted those who opposed them
Oh what awful things they said and did!
تلك الشتائم في الاعراض جارحة
للنفس اكثر مما تجرح الاسل
Those insults wounding honor
Hurt the soul more than blades
الغرب والشرق طول الدهر بينهما
تنازع عجزت عن حسمها الحيل
East and West the ages between them
Struggled in conflict beyond tricks
بين الشقيقين من اجل البقاء وغى
ليت الصداقة عن هذي الوغى بدل
If only friendship would replace that conflict
Between the two brothers over survival and war
والفرق بينهما في كل ناحية
باد اذا نظرت تستشرف المقل
The difference between them in every way
Is clear if you look closely
ولا تكافوء فيما شب بينهما
هذا يفوز وهذا كله فشل
No parity in what came between them
One succeeds while the other totally fails
هذا على نفسه تلقاه معتمدا
يسعى وهذا على الاقدار يتكل
One relies upon himself seeking
While the other on fate depends
هذا له من نشاط ما يقدمه
وذا يؤخره عن غايه الكسل
One has activity that advances him
While the other lags behind in laziness
تبقى الحياة على الارزاء طيبة
ما دامت النفس بالآمال تتصل
Life remains beautiful if you have hope
As long as the soul has aspirations
لو كنت اشهر بعض العز في وطني
ما كنت عن وطني المحبوب ارتحل
Had I gained some glory in my country
I would not have left my beloved homeland
ماذا يثبط في بغداد معتزمي
وليس لي ناقة فيها ولا جمل
What discourages my resolve in Baghdad
When I have no camel or mule there?
ليلى الحقيقة في حلي ومرتحلي
هي الخيال هي السلوى هي الامل
The reality of my Layla in my imagination and dreams
Is my consolation, my hope
ما في هواي لليلى من مصانعة
