إِنَّ المَنازِلَ هَيَّجَت أَطرابي
وَاِستَعجَمَت آياتُها بِجَوابي
Indeed, the dwellings stirred my deepest passions;
their traces fell mute when I called for an answer.
قَفراً تَلوحُ بِذي اللُجَينِ كَأَنَّها
أَنضاءُ رَسمٍ أَو سُطورُ كِتابِ
Deserted, they loom at Dhu al-Lujayn, as though
they were faded remnants of a drawing, or lines in a book.
لَمّا وَقَفتُ بِها القَلوصَ تَبادَرَت
مِنّي الدُموعُ لِفُرقَةِ الأَحبابِ
When I halted the young she-camel there, there rushed
from me tears for parting from those I love.
وَذَكَرتُ عَصراً يا بُثَينَةُ شاقَني
وَذَكَرتُ أَيّامي وَشَرخَ شَبابي
I remembered a time, O Buthayna, that awakened my longing,
and I remembered my days and the first bloom of my youth.
