عَجِلَ الفِراقُ وَلَيتَهُ لَم يَعجَلِ
وَجَرَت بَوادِرُ دَمعِكَ المُتَهَلِّلِ
Parting came in haste—if only it had not come so soon.
And the first wellings of your overflowing tears flowed,
طَرَباً وَشاقَكَ ما لَقيتَ وَلَم تَخَف
بَينَ الحَبيبِ غَداةَ بُرقَةِ مِجوَلِ
in passionate agitation; what you endured stirred your yearning, and you did not expect
the beloved’s departure that morning at Burqat Mijwal.
وَعَرَفتَ أَنَّكَ حينَ رُحتَ وَلَم يَكُن
بَعدُ اليَقينُ وَلَيسَ ذاكَ بِمُشكِلِ
And you knew, as you departed—though there was not
yet certainty, nor was that hard to see—
لَن تَستَطيعَ إِلى بُثَينَةَ رَجعَةً
بَعدَ التَفَرُّقِ دونَ عامٍ مُقبِلِ
that you would not be able to return to Buthayna
after the separation, before another year came.
