فَيا حُسنَها إِذ يَغسَلُ الدَمعُ كُحلَها
وَإِذ هِيَ تُذري الدَمعَ مِنها الأَنامِلُ
Her beauty when tears wash the kohl from her eyes,
And when she sheds tears that rain down her cheeks.
عَشِيَّةَ قالَت في العِتابِ قَتَلتَني
وَقَتلي بِما قالَت هُناكَ تُحاوِلُ
One evening she said reproachfully, “You have killed me,”
And her words were killing me as I tried to appease her.
فَقُلتُ لَها جودي فَقالَت مُجيبَةً
أَلَلجِدُّ هَذا مِنكَ أَم أَنتَ هازِلُ
I said “Be generous,” and she answered, “Is this serious,
Or are you just joking?”
لَقَد جَعَلَ اللَيلُ القَصيرُ لَنا بِكُم
عَلَيَّ لِرَوعاتِ الهَوى يَتَطاوَلُ
For us, the short night has been made by you
Seem longer with pangs of passion upon me.
