وَما بَكَتِ النِساءُ عَلى قَتيلٍ
بِأَشرَفَ مِن قَتيلِ الغانِياتِ
No women ever wept at the death of a hero
More noble than the death of the singing girls -
فَلَمّا ماتَ مِن طَرَبٍ وَسُكرٍ
رَدَدنَ حَياتَهُ بِالمُسمِعاتِ
When he died of passion and drunkenness,
They breathed life into him with their songs.
فَقامَ يَجُرُّ عِطفَيهِ خُماراً
وَكانَ قَريبَ عَهدٍ بِالمَماتِ
He arose pulling his cloak behind him
Though death had been near and imminent.
