يا ثُعَلاً وأينَ مِنِّي بنو ثُعَلْ

ألا حَبَّذَا قومٌ يَحُلُّونَ بالجَبَلْ

O Tha'labah, where are the clans of Tha'lab now?

Would that a people might settle in the mountains!

نَزَلْتُ على عَمْرِو بنِ دَرْمَاءَ بُلْطَةً

فيا كَرْمَ ما جَارٍ ويا حُسْنَ ما فَعَلْ

I came down upon 'Amr ibn Darma' in Bulṭah

So excellent his generosity, so fair his deeds!

تَظَلُّ لَبَونِي بينَ جَوٍّ وَمِسْطَحٍ

تُرَاعِي الفِراخَ الدَّارِجَاتِ مِن الحَجَلْ

My camels wander between the sands and stony ground

Grazing the young, bleating ones among the scrub.

وما زَالَ عنها مَعْشَرٌ بِقِسِيِّهِمْ

يَذُودُونَهَا حتى أَقُولَ لهمْ بَجَلْ

And still a group in their determination

Defend them until I say to them, “Enough!”

فَأَبْلِغْ مَعَدًّا والعِبَادَ وَطَيِّئًا

وَكِنْدَةَ أَنِّي شَاكِرٌ لِبَنِي ثُعَلْ

Convey then to Ma'add, and to 'Ibad, and Tayyi'
