1. تعالَ نزفُّ للثغرِ السلامَا

    ألستَ تَرَى على الثغرِ ابتسامَا

    Come, let us bid farewell and greet the lips with peace

    Do you not see a smile upon the lips?

  2. ألم تشعر كأن يَدَي عزيزٍ

    مَسَحنَ لك المواجعَ والسقاما

    Did you not feel as if the hands of a dear one

    Had soothed your pains and illnesses?

  3. كأن خُطى العبابِ خطى حبيبٍ

    كأنَّ الموجَ أفئدةٌ تَرامى

    As if the steps of the waves were the steps of a beloved

    As if the waves were hearts flung far apart

  4. سلاماً يا عروسَ الماء إني

    أحبُّكِ لا أملُّ بكِ المقاما

    Peace unto you, O bride of the water! Verily I

    Love you and do not tarry long with you

  5. أسيرُ إِلى لقائكِ نِضوَ شوقٍ

    وأرجعُ عن ربوعكِ مستهاما

    I travel to meet you with burning passion

    And leave your meadows fascinated

  6. أراكِ فتنتشي روحي وقلبي

    كأني قد سُقِيتُ بك المدَاما

    I see you and my soul and heart are enchanted

    As if I had drunk heady wine

  7. وإن طُوِيَ البساطُ فنصبَ عيني

    عليكِ خيالُ أحبائي القدامى

    And if the carpet of life be folded, in my eyes

    Will remain the image of my early beloved

  8. وإن طاحَ الزمانُ بكأس حبي

    فلا الساقي نسيتُ ولا الندامى

    And if time overtakes the cup of my love

    I'll remember neither the cupbearer nor the revelry

  9. فؤادي قم بنا نذكر شجانا

    لصخرٍ في جوارِ المكسِ قاما

    My heart, arise, let us remember our first love

    For a boulder near the harbor standing tall

  10. تعالَ ولا تقل هذا جمادٌ

    وكيفَ ترومُ بالصخرِ اعتصاما

    Come, say not it is inanimate matter

    How can you seek refuge in a stone at all?

  11. فكم في الحيِّ من قلبٍ أصمّ

    تَنَكَّرَ أو تَجَاهَلَ أو تعامى

    How many a living heart is deaf and blind

    Has disguised itself or turned away or ignored!

  12. وكم صخرٍ أحسَّ بما عنانا

    وما عَرَفَ الحديثَ ولا الكلاما

    How many a rock has felt what we have felt

    Though it knows not speech or words

  13. وكم في الناسِ من رجلٍ قويٍّ

    شديدِ البأسِ يقتحمُ اقتحاما

    How many a man, mighty and fierce in war

    Charging in headlong without fear

  14. تَعرَّضَ للحوادث لا يبالي

    تَلقَّاها نصالاً أم سهاما

    Confronted with events, undaunted,

    Whether missiles or arrows came his way

  15. فإِن عَرضت له الذكرُ الخوالي

    رأيتَ الكونَ في عينيه غاما

    If reminded of sweet past days

    You'd see the world clouded in his eyes

  16. عرته الرجفةُ الكبرى وراحت

    جيوشُ الصبرِ تنهزمُ انهزاما

    Great trembling seizes him and the armies of patience

    Turn in panicked retreat and flee away

  17. بربكِ أيها الأنوارُ ماذا

    صنعتِ بساهرٍ ألِفَ الظلاما

    By your Lord, O lights, what have you done

    To a wakeful soul accustomed to the gloom?

  18. بربك أيها الأمواجُ ظلَّت

    على الشطئانِ ترتطمُ ارتطاما

    By your Lord, O billows which smash continually

    Upon the shores beating them down

  19. أتيتُكِ أبتغي منك التأسِّي

    وأَنشدُ في نواحيك السلاما

    I came seeking solace, peace of mind from you

    Chanting hymns of peace on your shores

  20. أراكِ فتحتِ لي شجناً جديداً

    وكنتُ أرومُ للماضي التئاما

    I see you and you open up new sorrows

    When I hoped to heal old wounds

  21. وَهَيتُ وخانني جَلَدِي وإلا

    فهذي الدمعةُ الحرَّى علاما

    I wavered and my composure left me, else

    Why these burning tears suddenly flow?

  22. أيا بلدَ التأسي كيف أنسَى

    زماني فيكِ كهلاً أو غلاما

    O land that harbors me, how can I forget

    My days in you, as lad or fully grown?

  23. ويومَ أتيتُ مكتئباً عليلاً

    أحسُّ البَينَ يدنو والحِماما

    On days when I came to you downcast or ill

    Sensing the distance from my people swell

  24. أجرجرُ فيكِ أقداماً ثقالاً

    وأجمعُ مِن عزيمتيَ الحطاما

    Dragging heavily my feet, gathering

    Together remnants of my will

  25. وعلاتي وأدوائي كبارٌ

    شربنَ دمي وأبلَينَ العظاما

    My maladies and pains severe

    Had drained my blood and gnawed my bones arising

  26. أراكِ فلا أبالي بالمنايا

    وأَحمدُ عند شاطئكِ الختاما

    I see you and reck not of death

    Content beside your shore to end my days

  27. وكم طافَ الرفاقُ وغادروني

    كَعُوَّادٍ ومروا بي كراما

    How many friends have come and left me

    Like transient pilgrims honoring as they passed!

  28. تمرُّ بيَ الحياةُ ولستُ أدري

    أيومٌ مرَّ أم قضَّيتُ عاما

    Life passes and I know not

    If days have gone or years have slipped away

  29. عرفتك والشتاءُ يمدُّ ظلا

    وينشر في جوانبكِ الغماما

    I knew you as winter cast its shadow

    And hung its clouds around your hills

  30. عرفتكِ والمصيفُ عليكِ زاهٍ

    وقرنُ الشمسِ يضطرمُ اضطراما

    I knew you when summer clad you

    And the radiant sunlight beamed and brightly burned

  31. عرفتكِ والعواصفُ فيك غضبى

    نشرنَ على مُحَيَّاكِ القتاما

    I knew you when raving storms lashed out

    And spread their darkness o’er your laughing skies

  32. عرفتك والفلائكُ فيك بيضٌ

    مجنحةٌ يحاكينَ الحَماما

    I knew you as immaculate seagulls formed a ring

    And hovered gracefully like flocks of doves

  33. عرفتكِ هادئاً والفجر غافٍ

    كأَنَّ البحر وَسَّدَه فناما

    I knew you still, with dawn fast asleep

    As if the sea had muted and became completely numb

  34. عرفتك كالصديقِ بكلِّ حالٍ

    وكنتِ شرابَ روحي والطعاما

    I knew you as a friend in every state

    The wine and bread that nourished my soul

  35. وملحُكِ في دمي وشذاكِ باقٍ

    وهذا الصوتُ أسمعُه دواما

    Your salt is in my blood, your scent still lingering

    This voice I always hear ring out clear

  36. تعالي صخرةَ الماضي أجيبي

    وقوفُكِ وانتظارُكِ ذا إلاما

    Come boulder of old times, answer me

    Does your standing and waiting have any cause?

  37. لقيتِ من العبابِ كما لقينا

    من الأيَّام قرعاً واصطداما

    You suffered the same fate that we have borne

    From days - assault and violent blows

  38. كأنكِ للورى هدفٌ وهذي

    جموعٌ تبتغي أمراً جساما

    It's as if for all mankind you are the bull's eye

    And here are multitudes seeking some great feat

  39. إذا ما أخفقوا رجعوا فُرَادَى

    وإن هَمُّوا وجدتهُمُ زحاما

    If they fail they scatter and retreat

    If they venture, thronging close they come to thee

  40. فؤادي إن تغيرتِ الليالي

    فمثلكَ مَن رَعَى فيها الذماما

    My heart, though nights and seasons change

    Who sheltered in them like you kept sorrow's tears at bay?

  41. بلغنَا كعبةَ الآمالِ فاخشع

    ودعنا في مناسِكهَا قياما

    We've reached the shrine of hopes, so bow in reverence

    Let us worship there on bended knees

  42. خُذِ السلوانَ من حجرٍ صموتٍ

    فما أحراكَ بالحجرِ استلاما

    Take any boulder, deaf and numb it lies

    Why enforce on stone such courtesies?

  43. بربكَ أينَ أحلامٌ غَوالٍ

    وعمرٌ قد قطعناهُ نياما

    By your Lord, where are dreams of bygone days

    And years we spent complacent, asleep?

  44. وعهدٌ كانَ فيك ربيع وردٍ

    كهذا اليومِ حُسناً وانسجاما

    Where is that golden spring of yesteryear

    When love was beauty, joy and harmony?
