    ورقيق الأنداء والأسحارِ

    Under the eye of the morning and the lights

  2. في حمى سنتريس شبَّ غلامٌ

    شاعريُّ الكلام والأنظارِ

    In the fever of Centris a young man grew

    A poet in speech and in sights

  3. أزرق العين هادئ هدأة البحـ

    ـر بعيد الرضى بعيد القرارِ

    Blue-eyed, calm like the distant

    Sea, distant in pleasure, distant in rest

  4. ساهم يلمح السحائب في الأفـ

    ـقِ بعين عميقة الأغوارِ

    An archer watching the clouds in the

    Horizon with a deep-seeing eye

  5. شبَّ في جيرة النسائم والزهـ

    ـر وفي صحبة الغدير الجاري

    He grew in the neighborhood of the breezes and flowers

    And in the company of the flowing stream

  6. ونضيرِ الحقول والعشب المخضـ

    ـل يكسو شواطئ الأنهارِ

    And the counterpart of the fields and the burgeoning

    Grass that covers the banks of the rivers

  7. ومصيخاً إلى غناء السواقي

    شاكياتٍ سواخرَ الأقدارِ

    And listening to the singing of the waters

    Complaining of the turns of fate

  8. باكياتٍ على الصبا والأماني

    والهوى والنوى وبعدِ المزارِ

    Crying over youth and wishes

    And love and purpose and distance from tombs

  9. غير أن الذي شكا خطبه الأهـ

    ـلُ وأمسى حديث جارٍ وجارِ

    But he who complained of his troubles became

    The talk of neighbor and neighbor

  10. إنَّ ذاك الفتى الوديعَ الطهورَ الـ

    ـقلب في رقة النسيم الساري

    That gentle, pure-hearted young man

    Delicate as the passing soft breeze

  11. مغرمٌ بالعصا فلو خلف سورٍ

    لتخطى شواهق الأسوار

    Infatuated with his stick, had he been behind a wall

    He would have climbed over the highest fences

  12. ولأجل العصا سطا على الأفرع الخضـ

    ـراء زانت بواسق الأشجارِ

    And for the sake of the stick he extended

    Onto the green branches adorned with the tall trees

  13. ولأجل العصا سطا على خشب البيـ

    ـتِ طموحاً حتى لباب الدارِ

    And for the sake of the stick he extended

    Onto the wood of the house ambitious until the door

  14. ولو أنَّ العصيَّ عزَّت عليه

    لتمنَّى حتى عصا التسيارِ

    And had the stick been too hard for him

    He would have wished even for a walking stick

  15. إن تلك العصا لرَمزٌ على القو

    ة في قلب ماردٍ جبّارِ

    That stick is a symbol of power

    In the heart of a strong giant

  16. لا يرى القرية الصغيرة كفؤاً

    لكبار الآمال والأوطارِ

    Who does not see the small village as enough

    For the great hopes and prizes

  17. ساخراً من هدوئها مستعداً

    لصراع الخطوب والأخطارِ

    Mocking its calm, ready

    For the struggle of disasters and dangers

  18. أين يمضي للأزهر الشامخ الرأ

    س القويّ الباقي على الأدهارِ

    Where does he go to the towering brilliant

    Head, strong, enduring through the ages

  19. مطلع عبده وسعداً ورهط الـ

    ـمجد والبأس والعلى والفخارِ

    Rising of his servant, happy and group of

    Glory and courage and height and pride

  20. فرح الأهلُ بالغلامِ الذي صا

    رَ حديثاً في ندوة السُّمارِ

    The family rejoiced in the young man who

    Became the talk of the drinking party

  21. عمّموه وقفطنوه فأمسى

    أمل القوم فارس المضمارِ

    They dressed him up and coached him until he became

    The clan’s hope, the knight of the race track

  22. ومضى يطلب العلوم وحيداً

    موحشاً قلبهُ غريبَ الدارِ

    And he went seeking knowledge lonely

    With a heart feeling a stranger in the house

  23. ناظراً في هوامشٍ تأكل العقـ

    ـل وتبلي نواضر الأبصارِ

    Looking in margins that consume the

    Mind and wear out the insights

  24. لا يبالي الطول ولا يحفل الأقدا

    ر جاءت بكل أمرٍ ضاري

    He does not care about length or pay attention to fates

    That came with every flowing thing

  25. لا يبالي غداة يصغي إلى الشيـ

    ـخ وللشيخ هالة من وقارِ

    He does not care in the morning listening to the Sheikh

    And the Sheikh has an aura of dignity

  26. أحصيرٌ ممزقٌ أم حريرٌ

    مقعد للمجاهد الصبَّارِ

    Is it a torn mat or silk?

    A seat for the persevering warrior

  27. آهِ من هاته الشدائد فهي الـ

    ـنار تبلو القلوب في الأخيارِ

    Oh, these difficulties are fire

    Testing the hearts of the righteous

  28. إنَّ قلب العظيم ياقوتةً تسـ

    ـمو سمواً وتزدهي بالنارِ

    The heart of the great is a gem that

    Rises high and thrives in fire

  29. أي شيء في الدهر كالألم الجـ

    ـبار يجلو ضمائر الأحرارِ

    What is like enduring pain that

    Enlightens the conscience of the free?

  30. عجبي من مجاور ضاق بالأز

    هر واحيرة النفوس الكبارِ

    My wonder at the neighbor who was frustrated with Azhar

    And bewilderment of great souls

  31. ثم أمسى مطربشاً واكتسى البذ

    لة ما بين ليلةٍ ونهارِ

    Then he became a jester and wore rags

    Between night and day

  32. ثم ضاقت بهمه مصر فاشتا

    ق لغير الأوطان في الأمصارِ

    Then Egypt became too narrow for his worries so he

    Set out to other countries in the cities

  33. ضمَّ أشياءه إليه وأضحى

    في سفينٍ تجوب عرض البحارِ

    He gathered his things to himself and became

    On a ship sailing the seas

  34. ثم أمسى مبرنطاً يقصد السيـ

    ـن ويغزو مدينة الأنوارِ

    Then he became bourgeois seeking

    China and invading the city of lights

  35. والذي يبعث السرور ويدعو

    كلَّ نفس للزهو والإكبارِ

    And that which brings joy and invites

    Every soul to vanity and arrogance

  36. رجلٌ ما ازدهته فتنة باريـ

    ـس وما في باريس من أسرارِ

    A man whom the temptations of Paris never dazzled

    Nor what secrets Paris holds

  37. ظلَّ في ذلك الحمى مصرياً

    عربيَّ الحياة والأفكارِ

    He remained in that fever Egyptian

    Arabic in life and ideas

  38. كلما هبَّت الغواني عليه

    ضاق ذرعاً بالغادة المعطارِ

    Whenever the melodies blew at him

    He was frustrated with the scented coquette

  39. يزفر الزفرة العنيفة ترمي

    من لظاها فحمَ الدُّجى بشرارِ

    He sighs the violent sigh throwing

    From its flames the sparks of ember

  40. يذكر النيل والأحبة بالنيـ

    ـل ويشدو برائع الأشعارِ

    He recalls the Nile and loved ones on the Nile

    And chants the finest poems

  41. كرّموا نابغيكمو واعرفوهم

    فضياع النبوغ في الإِنكارِ

    Honor your geniuses and acknowledge them

    The loss of genius in denial is waste

  42. فزكيّ مباركٌ شعلة في

    مصر تهدي شبابها كالمنارِ

    So Zaki Mubarak is a torch in Egypt

    Lighting its youth like a minaret

  43. قسماً لو يُتاح لي الغارُ كللـ

    ـت بكفي جبينُه بالغارِ

    I swear had the cave been made available to me

    I would have crowned his forehead with it
