This is the Kaaba around which we once circled,
praying there morning and evening.
How often we prostrated ourselves and worshiped beauty within it—
how, by God, have we returned as strangers?
House of my dreams and my love, you greeted us
with the cold reserve accorded a newcomer.
You failed to recognize us, though once, whenever you saw us,
the light would smile upon us from afar.
My heart thrashed at my side like a slaughtered creature,
and I cried, “O heart, be still.”
Then tears and the wounded past answered:
“Why did we return? Would that we had not returned!
Why did we return? Had we not folded love away,
finished with longing and pain,
contented ourselves with quiet and peace,
and come at last to a void like nonbeing?
O nest, when one intimate companion flies away,
the other finds no meaning in the sky;
the days seem yellow as autumn,
wailing like desert winds.”
Ah, what time has done to us!
Can this sullen ruin truly be you?
And am I this bowed-headed phantom?
How grievously we passed our nights in hardship—and you did too.
Where is your gathering place, and where the evening talk?
Where are your people, openhearted, and your boon companions?
Whenever I send my eyes forth to look,
tears spring into them and cloud them.
Ennui has settled in beauty’s abode,
and its breath has spread throughout the air.
Night has knelt there and crouched low,
and its specters roam the hall.
I beheld decay with my own eyes,
its two hands weaving the spider’s web.
I cried, “Alas for you! You reveal yourself in a place
where everything is alive and never dies—
every joy and every sorrow,
and nights both joyous and mournful.”
And I hear the footfalls of time,
and solitude’s tread upon the stairs.
My tender refuge, my compassionate abode,
and eternity’s shades for one afflicted and worn—
God knows, the road has grown long,
and I have come to you so that I might rest.
At your door I lay down my quiver,
like a stranger returned from the valley of trials.
Within you, God has held my estrangement at bay,
and my traveling gear has come to rest upon the soil of home.
You are my homeland, yet I am an outcast,
forever banished within the world of my misery.
If I return, it is for intimate converse that I return;
then I depart, once I have emptied my cup.
