Together we withdrew to a secluded place,
passing our conversation back and forth.
She asked me, “Have you tired of us, or turned to someone other than—
—us with a fierce love and ardor?”
I said, “Never! How much I owe your eyes
in gracious favor—how much has kept being offered and bestowed!
As long as I live, I shall repay the debt in longing,
in yearning for your sanctuary, and in sleeplessness;
and in a resounding poem, every verse
with a thousand raging winds behind it that never subside.
That is my pledge to you: how often the heart has failed—
—to pay love’s debts or keep a covenant.
And the promises you made my heart—
I cannot see myself living until they are fulfilled.”
