You asked me to write, O my paradise;
and what would you have me write?
Nothing within my breast is hidden from you,
and your heart knows all that has been kept unseen.
I shall write that you are spring itself,
and that you are the freshest thing upon the hills;
that you are beauty, one of a kind,
the dawn of youth and the dream of youth.
At morning I joyfully hail your name,
and fold sunset closed upon remembrance of you.
Alas for the life that remains to me:
this is the darkness beneath my eyes,
and this the whiteness of gray hair—how strange!—
a sunset dressed in the guise of sunrise.
Woe to me for a brimming cup,
and for blood spilled into the cup;
for a deceptive mirage, and for
a dazzling radiance, glittering in its flashes.
Time passed it around among a company;
they swayed, heads and necks inclining.
They were struck down while you thought them drunk.
The boon companions are dead, O cupbearer.
O Time, I never complained of weariness, nor
did Time’s calamities ever manage to exhaust me.
I tormented my days by keeping them chaste,
and killed them with the purity of my character.
Oh, how much I planted, how much I watered, how often
I gazed upon blossoms and leaves!
What recourse have I when the earth is barren?
My scant giving and my lavish pouring are alike.
Where are those I raised, who then sank down,
those whom I built into edifices of character?
Fidelity is merchandise that has gone unsold,
and its possessor’s end is destitution.
Though I gained nothing, they surely prevailed:
from me they won forgiveness and compassion.
But I—though the wound pains me—
enough; the cautery of my burning sears.
Impossible that I should forget they acted wantonly,
while I kept faith and never trifled with my covenant.
