1. ذات مساء صفا المساء

    وليسَ في خاطري صفاء

    One serene evening,

    though serenity was absent from my soul.

  2. يخيّمُ الليلُ في فؤادي

    والبدرُ في قبة السماء

    Night descends upon my heart,

    while the moon climbs the dome of the sky.

  3. والسُحبُ لما انتشرنَ بيضاً

    أثوابُ عرسٍ على الفضاء

    When the clouds spread out white,

    like the gowns of a wedding across the horizon,

  4. يلبسها غيمةً فأخرى

    يختارُ منها الذي يشاء

    one cloud dresses another,

    choosing for it what it desires.

  5. أو يخلُع الغيمَ ثم يبدو

    طفلاً مصوغاً من الضياء

    Or it sheds the cloud to reveal itself

    like a child molded from light.

  6. ما يبرحُ الكونُ في صباه

    مجدَّدَ الحسنِ والرواء

    The universe in its youth does not cease

    renewing beauty and joy.

  7. ما يبرح الكونُ غيرَ أني

    قد دبَّ في نفسي الفناء

    Yet the universe does not cease while

    death crept into my soul.

  8. فمن عَياءٍ إِلى كلالٍ

    ومن كلالٍ إِلى عياء

    From wakefulness to weariness,

    and from weariness to wakefulness.

  9. كم احتمَلنا وكم صبرنَا

    والعيشُ صبرٌ وكبرياء

    How much we endured, how patient we were,

    for life is patience and dignity.

  10. وكم نسينَا وكم محَونَا

    وكم غفرنَا لمن أساء

    How much we forgot, how much we erased,

    how much we forgave those who did wrong.

  11. وما عتبنَا على حبيبٍ

    لكن عتبنَا على القضاء

    We did not reproach a loved one,

    rather, we reproached destiny.
