بأي معجزة في الحب نتفق

يا قلب لا يتلاقى الفجر والغسقُ

By what miracle of love do we agree,

O heart, dawn and dusk never meet.

يا قلب إنا لقينا اليوم معجزة

تكاد في ظلمات الليل تأتلقُ

O heart, today we met a miracle,

That almost shines in the darkness of night.

ظللتُ أسأل نفسي كيف تعشقها

بقية من بقايا العمر تحترق

I wondered how she could love me,

A remnant of my life burning away.

وافيتها وفلول النور دامية

تطفو وترسب أو تعلو فتعتلقُ

I met her while sparks of light bled,

Floating and sinking or rising and clinging.

لم أدر حين تبدت لي إذا شفقي

أبصرته أو على المنصورة الشفق

I did not know when dawn appeared to me,

If I saw it or the glowing sunset.

يا من منحت الأماني البيض معذرة

إني بهذي الأماني البيض أختنقُ

O you who gave white wishes an excuse,

With these white wishes I suffocate.

أين الهدوء المرجى في جوانبها

إني رجعت وليلي كله أرق

Where is the hoped calm around her?

I returned and my night is still sleepless.

أقبلت أنشد أمنا في هواك بها

فلم أنل وتولى قلبي الفرق

I came reciting love poems to her,

But gained nothing as my heart wavered.

لا بالقلوب ولا الأرواح يا أملي

أنّا بشيء وراء الروح نعتنق

Neither with hearts nor souls, O my hope,

We embrace something beyond the soul.

ويحي على كفك البيضاء إذ بسطت

عند السلام وويحي حين تنطبق

Woe to your white palm when outstretched

At greetings, and woe when withdrawn.

هل يسمع النيل إذ سرنا بجانبه

والموج مجتمع فيه ومفترق

Can the Nile hear us passing by,

Its waves gathered and scattered?

صوتاً تماوج في روحي فجاوبه

من جانب القلب موج راح يصطفق

A voice surging in my soul answered,

From the heart's side a wave clashed.

تظل تنهب أذني من أطايبه

كأنها من خفايا الغيب تسترق

She continues to steal from my ear,

As if from the unseen's secrets she steals.

يا جنة من جنان الله أعبدها

لن تبعدي ولدي السحر والعبق

O paradise of God's gardens I worship,

You will not distance me, my charm and fragrance.
