بهر النور عيوني فترفق

حين تدنو أنني لا أستطيع

The light has dazzled my eyes, so be gentle,

When you come near, for I cannot bear it.

أيها الورد الذي طاف بنا

أيها الطل الذي بلَّ الظما

O rose that hovered around us,

O dew that wet the thirst,

لا أراك الله حالي وأنا

أطأ الشوك ويغزوني الغما

I do not see you now while I

Tread on thorns as worries invade me.

يا أمانيّ وحبي وخيالي

لا تضيع لحظة فالعمر ضاع

O my wishes, love, and imagination,

Do not let a moment pass, for life is fleeting,

لا أراك الله حالي والليالي

كاسفات ليس فيهن شعاع

I do not see you now while the nights

Are gloomy, with no ray of light.

قد بلوت الويل فيها لا بلوتا

وأنا أبدأ يومي بالمساء

I have tasted anguish in them, not tasted them,

And I start my day in the evening,

وعرفت الضيق ضيق القلب حتى

لم أجد في الكون ثقباً من رجاء

And I've known tightness, the tightness of the heart, until

I found no hole of hope in the universe.

لا وربي ليس في الدنيا ختام

حين يغدو البعث نجوى من حبيب

No, by my Lord, there is no end in the world

When resurrection becomes the whisper of a lover,

حين يستيقظ قلب من منام

والمنادي أنت والحب المجيب

When a heart awakens from sleep

And you are the caller, and love is the respondent.
