O You, the Most High, All-Forgiving and Merciful
Does the summit pity the weakness of the foothills?
Your crown immersed in light while
Every bright star sings in your throne
Where are the swaying meadows overturned
Above the houses on hilltops?
Where are the autumn leaves
Swayed by doubts, unable to rest?
From a lofty, steadfast tree
With lasting views against all winds
You are absolved of this soft life
We wake or leave sighing
And where in the smiles of the atoms
Is the light of wishes from wounds’ glow?
Listen to this earth and hear what
She complains of when none else would share
She floats on a flood of her pains
While amidst her pains is Noah’s ark
The most wondrous silent thing on high
More eloquent than clear words
Mocking the earth when darkened
By the light upon its horizon
Does wisdom mock what we build
Of whims and unchecked zeal?
The foolishness of our highest aims
Feeble resolve and broken wings
I shield the justice of truth from our injustice
So many wounded eagles on the wastelands
And refugees from lofty peaks
Their homelands are all ruins
You are their only sought refuge
And their only desire is to flock to you
The eagle is but a monk on high
His shrine the bright face of the sky
And its heart, the vast, so it never landed
On vile, mean, barren ground
On the ground where its praises
Are the weeping of sorrows and the call of wounds
A supplicant crying with the tears of grief
Over the nights, sick and frail
How miserable is the earth with its people!
It brings joy from their mixtures as it approves
The temple has denied its visitors
And the monastery become strange, unfrequented
The body has known no salvation
From the mire of clay, nor has the soul escaped
O Lord of the Summit, listen to us
No flinty heart knows compassion
And look upon the knife in the square
Where the blood of the slain has roared
And pour the dew of love from our mouths
How many weeping and agonized are parched!
Perhaps after sorrow will shine
A beautiful face and time
