1. وَما لَبِسَ الأَقوامُ ثَوباً مِنَ الهَوى

    وَلا جَدَّدوا إِلّا الثِّيابَ الَّتي أُبلي

    And never have the people worn a garment of passion

    Nor have they donned any robes but those I've worn threadbare

  2. وَلا شَرِبوا كَأساً مِن الحُب حُلوة

    وَلا مُرَّةً إِلّا وَشُربهم فضلي

    Nor have they sipped a sweet cup of love

    Without my draught preceding theirs
