1. Does it please you that I waste away? May contentment remain yours.

    No envier or reproacher will attain it.

  2. She says, though love for her has exhausted my patience:

    “My longing only lengthens as time goes on.”

  3. “You have gone beyond love’s true measure in complaining of it,

    though it is only a sigh and a burning thirst.”

  4. No eye has lain awake for her through even one night

    and found love light upon it, for love is heavy.

  5. You found a way to kill me, while I have no way

    to patience or consolation away from you.

  6. Here is my soul: make its last breath a gift to death

    now that your departure has come.

  7. Whoever offers you affection rises in stature,

    and my abasement for your sake seems small indeed.

  8. Love has only grown sounder since you left,

    but my heart has been sick whenever you were far away.

  9. By your life, I have not pursued what has passed with grief,

    and the Commander of the Faithful’s judgment is gracious.

  10. He is religion and worldly life; no seeker

    or desirer can be turned away from what he possesses.

  11. Namesake of God’s friend, may you ever prosper;

    may the blessings of the Majestic One meet you with favor.

  12. May the One who named you protect you, as you stand in awe of Him;

    you win redress against oppressive time.

  13. Wherever one obedient to you settles, honor dwells beside him;

    one who defies you is lowly, even if he reaches the stars.

  14. The eyes of justice have risen with their gaze,

    while the eye of injustice has grown dim.

  15. Through you the world shines, and its light grows bright;

    you are the one whose radiance even setting kindles.

  16. Every height falls short when you rise,

    and every boast is slight when you boast.

  17. Every splendor, whether new or inherited,

    points toward you—indeed, it is proof of your worth.

  18. Were it not for the Abbasids, descendants of Muhammad’s uncle,

    the light of truth would have sunk into obscurity.

  19. You have God’s two chosen mountains,

    which uphold Islam when it inclines:

  20. his prophethood, then the caliphate after it;

    neither will pass away before the final meeting.

  21. The caliphate came to you by choice, not by coercion;

    in it, God is your guardian and protector.

  22. The One who preserved it for you bestowed it on you;

    He guarantees that His favor to you will be complete.

  23. Even if you turned away from it, God’s choosing would lead it

    by its reins to you, where it has come to dwell.

  24. It settled where the Sovereign placed it by His decree,

    and what the Sovereign has settled cannot be moved.

  25. Its longing remains bound to you,

    as one dear friend longed after another.

  26. May you rejoice, best of mankind, in a loyal counselor

    whose standing among the people is great.

  27. Your servant Bajkam has strengthened the cause of religion;

    through him your realm rises and endures.

  28. He is death poured upon every oath-breaker;

    because of him, the hands of misfortune grow feeble.

  29. Among those who bestow favors, you have no opponent like him,

    and among loyal counselors he has no equal.

  30. May you remain protected, with the kingdom yours forever;

    may you endure as long as evening follows morning.

  31. Your servant has a celebrated title when he names you;

    by it he rises among people and asserts his strength.

  32. One such as you grants a title to one who seeks a gift;

    may you go on giving generously and granting favors.
