لذيذٌ إذا در قطر الرهام

وأضمرت البدر سجف الغمام

Delightful when rain drips softly,

And the full moon conceals behind clouds.

هبوب النسيم بعرف الرياض

يرقرقه في حواشي الظلام

The breeze blows through the gardens,

Rustling gently amid the darkness.

لذيذٌ تحدر ماء الغدير

وقد أنطق الليل خرس الحمام

Delightful, water flows from the stream,

And the night makes the doves' silence speak.

لذيذٌ دبيب الكرى في الجفون

بعد الكلال وطول القيام

Delightful, drowsiness tingles the eyelids,

After weariness and long standing.

ولكن لفظك من ذاك أحلى

وأوقع في قلبي المستهام

But your voice is sweeter than this,

More touching to my attentive heart.

أظل إذا استك في مسمعي

يرف على جناح الغرام

When you speak, I listen rapt,

Wings of passion flutter and soar.

كأن فؤادي مسحورةٌ

من الفلك في موجه المتسامي

My heart enchanted as if

From the sky in surging waves,

تعانقها نفحات النسيم

ويرقصها زجلٌ ذو التطام

Caressed by the breeze’s breaths,

Danced by rhythmic chant.

شفاهٌ يؤججن أنفاسه

ويلثمن ألفاظهن الظامي

Lips ignite their breaths

And kiss their burning words.

تمهل ألفاظه علها

تبرد في فيه حر الأوام

Words tarry in your mouth to cool

The heat of passions in your soul.

وتقرع أذني فتهتاجي

كأن لها نشوات المدام

They strike my ear and I rejoice

As if they were drafts of wine.

إذا قيد الهم خطو الرجاء

أطلقه لي سحر الكلام

When care binds the steps of hope,

The magic of speech sets it free.
