1. سيل همومي قد طغى عبابا

    وجن حتى ملأ الشعابا

    My torrent of sorrow has overflowed

    And raged until it filled the valleys

  2. يا اليتني لو تدفع المصابا

    ليت وتحلى الصبر المذابا

    Oh if only you could ward off this affliction

    If only steadfastness would adorn itself and melt away

  3. أدري لداء منهكي طبابا

    يبلد الإحساس والألبابا

    I know the cure for this exhausting illness

    That numbs the senses and the minds

  4. يفل حد الخطب إن أصبابا

    ويذهب الأشجان والأوصابا

    It conquers the severity of tribulations, should they befall

    And takes away the sorrows and the pains

  5. إني سمعت في الدجى اصطخابا

    كأن في إهابه ذئابا

    In the darkness I heard a commotion

    As if amidst it were ferocious wolves

  6. سيمت أذى فطلبت وثابا

    مستهولاً ينتزع الصوابا

    I walked cautiously seeking refuge

    Bewildered, grasping for wisdom

  7. يهتك من فودك الحجابا

    مثل الصدى قد عمر الخرابا

    It tore away your veil

    Like an echo spreading through ruins

  8. كأن حولي رمماً أسلابا

    تفصل في مسامعي خطابا

    As if around me were crumbled rubble

    Separating in my ears its address

  9. وخلت أني ناظرٌ شبابا

    تخالهم على الثرى ثيابا

    And I imagined I saw youth

    Their clothes on the ground like white fog

  10. بيضاً وطوراً تجتلي ضبابا

    منهم يغطي الأفق والرحابا

    Some concealed the horizon and the open expanse

    And obscured the hills and the clouds

  11. ويحجب الأطواد والسحابا

    تنكره إذا بدا أو غابا

    Unrecognizable whether they appeared or disappeared

    So I hurried towards them, hesitating

  12. فقمت أسعى نحوهم مرتابا

    منجفلاً ومرة وثابا

    Retreating at times, at others bold

    Oh if only I did not try to get near

  13. يا ليتني لم أبتغ اقترابا

    وليتني جانبتهم جنابا

    If only I had avoided them

    What foreordained fate has transpired

  14. أي قضاء قد مضى غلابا

    وأي خطبٍ قد رمى فصابا

    And what tribulations have struck their mark

    And excelled in vanquishing these challenging souls

  15. وبز هذي الأنفس الصعابا

    أرواحها وأولغ الذئابا

    Whose spirits were seized by the wolves

    With their tears and the dust blanketing

  16. في دمعها ووسد الترابا

    خدودها النواضر الراطابا

    Their glowing tear-stained cheeks

    And sowing the heads and the necks

  17. وبذر الرؤوس والرقابا

    ونثل الكبود والعيابا

    And scattering the livers and the limbs

    And separating the comrades and the loved ones

  18. وفرق الخلان والأحبابا

    وجمع الوحوش والعقابا

    And gathering the beasts and the birds of prey

    Oh woe to the hands that inflicted this pain

  19. يا ويح أيدٍ جنت المصابا

    وهاجت السيوف والحرابا

    And brandished the swords and the weapons

    And made havoc their cause

  20. وتخذت من الردى أسبابا

    يا ممطراً على الورى عذابا

    Oh you who rain torment upon the land

    And drive rigid skulls

  21. وراعيا جماجماً صلابا

    ومجرياً دماءها عبابا

    And spill their blood in torrents

    And unjustly fear no reckoning

  22. وظالماً لا يتقي حسابا

    أجلك يبكي الحضر الغيابا

    Your time will make the absent weep

    And sorrow will shroud the faces

  23. وتألف الوجوه الاكتئابا

    وتركب الأرامل الصعابا

    And the bereaved women will bear misfortunes

    And the shoulders will carry the burdens

  24. وتحمل الكواهل الهضابا

    ليت الذي سن لنا القرضابا

    If only the one who decreed our misery

    Could hear this address, if he was able

  25. يسمع لو يسطيع ذا الخطابا

    من ذاهبٍ لا يرتجي إيابا

    Of one who does not hope to return

    And has no concern for answers

  26. وسائل لا يحفل الجوابا

    يلبس من دمائه جلبابا

    Wearing his blood as his garment

    Taking his wounds as his cups

  27. متخذاً جراحه أكوابا

    بكرهه ودمه شرابا

    Quenching his thirst with his blood as his drink

    Oh king, if you had headed the call

  28. يا ملكاً أجبت إذا أهابا

    خال الدماء ذهباً مذابا

    You would have poured out molten gold

    But instead you led our youth to misery

  29. فساقنا إلى الردى أغصابا

    أجر وليدي واحتقب ثوابا

    Make my son successful and anticipate his reward

    And be a helper to a father who has aged

  30. وكن معيناً لأبٍ قد شابا

    يبكي ويستبكي لي السحابا

    Weeping and making the clouds weep for me

    And a wife whom you have afflicted with anguish

  31. وزوجةٍ ألبسها المصابا

    تسفى على واضحها الترابا

    Pouring soil on her glowing cheek

    Do not let the injustice of servants persist

  32. لا تجعلن ظلم العباد دابا

    بل أنت لا تسمع لي خطابا

    But you do not hear my address

    Does a king who sees mercy as a disgrace

  33. هل يرحم الضعيف والمصابا

    ملكٌ يرى الرحمة فيه عابا

    Have compassion on the weak and afflicted?

    I call on the one who, when I call him, answers

  34. أدعو الذي أن أدعه أجابا

    ثم ارتمي وافترش الصحابا

    Then I cast myself down and hugged the ground
