My brother, as my soul rose in revolt,
It burdened me with more than I can bear of injustice,
Am I not just the lord of a chest, when it boils,
I feel like an arrow from the intensity of throbbing?
I wore the gown of time for twenty pilgrimages,
And two, O Shauqi, when I took off this coat.
Turning away from the world and whoever does not find in it,
A purpose for hopes covers with asceticism.
Events force me as if I have
Found against my will the writhings of fate
So it does not cool my heart when it shoots,
Nor does it stop harassing even for a day.
I resist as if my heart is a demolished cave,
With a bent entrance where the winds can play.
Or as if I were amidst the sea of events, a rock,
Pounded by waves as it tosses and turns.
I look with confused eyes at the blink of life,
And return it blushed like anemones.
It’s as if my heart is between grief and respite,
A leather skin beaten by the hands of fate.
I keep my grudge in my heart and see,
No way to extinguish the burning ember in my chest.
I treat a soul which I highly suspect,
Will expire breaths over time.
When I close my eyes, my heart stays awake,
Remaining alert all night watching and waiting.
It’s not that I sleep while my eyes do, but I imagine,
They take a glance at my heart when I rest.
Of what use is it that groves are beautifully adorned,
Lit up and peaceful with birds?
What joy is it that winds are asleep,
When my heart remains awake for ages?
A breeze comforts the soul for a moment when it blows,
But what nights follow it with their pains?
The shadows of plants lengthen and the sun seems like a child,
But when it moves south the days shorten.
I will live my life with a restless agitated soul,
And where can I find about that a refuge and shelter?
According to men’s capacity to feel is their misery,
While good fortune has an aura of apathy.
My friend wait, may God bless you,
For the still of night does not amuse me much,
When whatever is between Hijaz and Hasha stirs,
Every stillness arouses my vigilance.
If my soul calms down, it does not bother me,
Winds that drag their tails around me and gust.
It does not harm the whale in the sea that,
It is stirred and the waves surge and swell.
