لم يدع منها البلى إلذا كما

تترك التسعون من غض الشباب

Time has left nothing of it but ruins, as if

Ninety years of youth's freshness had abandoned it.

وهي في سكونها كأنما

فارقتها روحها الأذما

In its stillness it seems as though

Its spirit had departed in agony.

حكم الدهر بها فاحتكما

وكسا الهجر ثوباً مظلماً

Fate had judged it, so it submitted,

And separation clothed it in dark robes.

ما أضل الطرف في هذا الأهاب

ما ترى العين بها إلّا رماما

How the eye wanders astray in this desolation!

It sees there nothing but debris.

باليات تملأ النفس ظلاما

وسقتها الريح دفعاً ولطما

Ruins that fill the soul with gloom,

And the winds batter it, blow upon blow.

لغط اليمّ إذا اليمّ طما

والتقت فيه هضابٌ بهضاب

The clamor of the sea when the sea is tumultuous

And wave meets wave.

ليس يلفى عندها الصوت قرارا

كلما أرسلته مل الجوارا

No rest is found there for voice or echo;

As soon as it is sent forth, it dies away.

واسترد المرء منها ما أعارا

تثبت الأصداء عنها مثلما

And one retrieves from it nothing lent to it.

The echoes cling to it as birds

طارت العقبان طيراً عن عقاب

إيه يا مهد مسرات الصبا

Took flight from a desolate place.

Oh cradle of the delights of youth,

عجباً أصبحت قبراً عجبا

حاملاً عن هاجريك الوصبا

Strangely you have become a grave, strangely.

Bearing away from your two lovers their rapture,

كنت للهو فقد صرت وما

أنت إلا طيف أيامٍ عذاب

You were for pleasure, but now you are naught but

A phantom of agonizing days.

أوصدوا الأبواب باللَه ولا

تدعوا العين ترى فعل البلى

Close the doors in God's name, and do not

Let the eye behold the work of time.

وامنعوا دار الهوى أن تبذلا

إن للدار علينا ذمماً

And forbid the house of passion to offer

Its hospitality, for it owes a duty to us,

وقبيحٌ خونها بعد الخراب

And it were ugly to betray it after decay.
