1. يا حبذا أمسى من

    مفارقٍ وإن قصر

    O what a blessed eve it was

    When we parted though brief

  2. ما في الخوالي غيره

    يومٌ به العين تقر

    Nothing in seclusion like it

    A day that delights the eye

  3. نسيمه إذا جرى

    يغض من لفح الذكر

    Its breeze when it blew

    Lessened the ardour of yearning

  4. قضيت فيه وطراً

    من مسمعٍ ومن نظر

    I spent in it a kindly time

    Of hearing and seeing

  5. والأفق داجٍ مدجنٌ

    يكاد يهمى ويدر

    The horizon was darkened

    As if about to bellow and roar

  6. والشمس تزوي وجهها

    أمن حياءٍ وخفر

    The sun was veiling her face

    Out of shyness or caution

  7. كم ليلةٍ صيفيةٍ

    أنساكها يومٌ خصر

    How many a summer night

    One short day made me forget

  8. وحبذا القهوة لا

    تأخذ منا وتذر

    And blessed is coffee that

    Takes not from us and leaves

  9. ما خير راحٍ تقر الس

    سمع وتمضي بالبصر

    No good in rest that contents the

    Hearing but takes away the sight

  10. ضل لعمري المحتسي

    للراح أيامق أخر

    Lost, by my life, is the one who rests

    His days away in repose

  11. أيام لا يلفي الفتى

    معاونواً على الفكر

    Days where a youth finds not

    A helper for reflection

  12. يا يوم جددت لنا

    منىً فمن لي بالظفر

    O day you renewed in me

    A wish, but who helps me attain it

  13. وكان جرحي قد أوى

    على الليالي فغفر

    My wound had healed

    With the passing nights, so it forgave

  14. يا ليت حبي وردةٌ

    تروق حسناً من نظر

    Oh would that my love were a rose

    Fair to behold in the eyes' light

  15. يومض فيها طلها

    مبتسماً إلى الغدر

    Upon it her clear dew would smile

    Gently towards the unfaithful one

  16. تفاوح الغيث كما

    فاوح شعري من سحر

    Ruffled by rain as my poetry

    Is ruffled by the bright dawn

  17. وليتني حمامةٌ

    أصدح في ضوء القمر

    Would that I were a dove

    Cooing in the moon's glow

  18. أبكي إذا ألوت بها

    هوج الرياح والمطر

    I'd weep when the winds and rain

    Lash her with violent gusts

  19. أبكي وأستبكي لها

    بمعزلٍ عن البشر

    I'd cry and lament for her

    Apart from all mankind

  20. حتى إذا عاد الربي

    ع واكتسى الروض الحبر

    Until when the downpour ends

    And the meadow dons its green

  21. غنيتها مؤهلا

    مرحباً بين الشجر

    I'd sing her, prepared

    Greetings amidst the trees!

  22. أو ليتني لؤلؤة الط

    طل عليها في السحر

    Or would that I were a pearl of dew

    Upon her at dawn's first light

  23. أنعم فيها ليلتي

    بطيب ذاك الختبر

    I'd delight in her my night

    With that camphor's sweet scent

  24. حتى إذا الصبح جلا الظ

    ظلام عنا وحسرا

    Until when the morn reveals

    The gloom and strips bare the veil

  25. ركبت متن الريح أر

    جو كرة لما غبر

    I'd ride the wind's back wishing

    A sphere after the dust stirs
