إِنَّكَ المخلوقُ في كَبدي

وأَنا المخلوقُ في كَبَدِ

You are the one created in my inner self,

And I am the one created in your inner self.

إِنْ نَجَا مِنْ مَاءِ أَدمُعِه

فإِلى نارٍ من الْكَمَدِ

If he is saved from the water of his tears,

It is to a fire from embers.

يَشْتَهي وَصْلاً فلم يَرَه

ويَرَى ماءً فلم يَرد

He yearns for union but did not see it,

And sees water but did not drink.

هائِمٌ حَيْرَانُ في بلدٍ

والذي يَهْواهُ في بَلَد

Wandering, confused in a country,

While the one he loves is in another country.

كُلُّ شيءِ بَعْدَ فُرْقَتِه

فاسْأًلوا عَنْه سِوَى جَلَدي

Everything after our separation,

Ask about it except for my skin.

غُلَّتي مُذْ بان ما نَدِيت

بشرابٍ للدُّموعِ نَدِي

My sickness since the day I called out,

With a drink for the tears I called out.

رشأٌ ما إِن رأَى رشَدُ

غير غيِّي فيه لا رَشَدِي

A young man who if he saw guidance

Saw none but my madness in it, no guidance of mine.

غَابَ عَنْ عَيْني وصَرَّفَها

تَحْتَ أَمر الدّمع والسُّهُد

He disappeared from my eye and it dismissed him.

Under the command of tears and wakefulness.

ساعَةً كانَ اللِّقاءُ لنا

وافترقْنا آخِرَ الأَبَدِ

An hour when we would meet

And we parted at the end of forever.

ساعةٌ عُدّت لنادبها

قَبْلُ قَدْ كَانَتْ بلا عَدَد

An hour counted for our elegy

Used to be without number.

يَا لَدِينارٍ بوجْنتِه

كم بكتبها عينُ مُنْتقِد

Oh gold coin with its stamp!

How much did the critic's eye cry over inscribing it?

ولِعقْدٍ فوق لبَّته

تحته عِقْدٌ من الغيَدِ

And for a necklace above his collar

Under it a necklace of pearls.

أَحسنُ العقْدَيْن مَا نسبُوا

نظمَه للواحِد الصَّمد

The best of the two necklaces is what they attributed

Its stringing to the One, the Eternal.

يا غَزَالاً لا يُصادُ ومَا

قلتُ صِلْ لكن أَقولُ صِدِي

Oh you gazelle who cannot be hunted, and what

I said, "Be devoted," but I say, "Turn away."

أَنت لي ماءُ الحَياةِ ومَا

قَالَهُ الواشُون كالزَّبَد

You are the water of life to me and what

The slanderers said is like foam.

فعليَّ البثُّ دُونَهُم

وعليكَ النَّفْثُ في العُقد

So I must speak exclusion without them

And upon you is discretion in jewelry.

صِدْ وصُلْ واقْتُل بلا قوَدٍ

أَنْت في حِلٍّ من القَوَدِ

Turn away, be devoted, and kill without firewood!

You have lawful release from firewood.

إِنَّ لي أَهلاً يسرُّهم

مَقْتَلي في اليوم قَبْلَ غَدِ

I have people who are pleased

For me to die today before tomorrow.

ويودُّون المنيَّةَ لو

نُزِعَتْ رُوحِي مِنَ الجَسَدِ

They want death if only

My soul were stripped from my body

حسَداً من عند أَنفسهم

لا شُفُوا من ذلك الحسد

Out of envy from their souls.

They have no cure for that envy.

ليْسَ فِيهم غَيْرُ مُضْطغِنٍ

مُضْرَم الأَحشاءِ متَّقِد

Among them is none but the flaming envious one

Whose innards are aflame.

قَلبُه ملآنُ مِنْ حَنَقٍ

بَعْدَ مَلْءِ الكَفِّ مِنْ صَفدِ

His heart filled with resentment

After his palm was full of shackles.

وهْوَ ذِئْبٌ إِن حَضَرْتُ وإِن

غِبْتُ عنه صار كَالأَسد

He is a wolf if I am present. And if

I am absent from him he becomes a lion.

جُلتُ في الأَفكارِ منه ومَا

جَالَ في فِكْرِي ولاَ خَلَدِي

I worried in thoughts because of him while he

Did not worry in thought of me at all.

فهْو في هَمِّ وفي كَمَدٍ

وأَنا في عِيشَةٍ رَغَدِ

For he is in anxiety and in embers

While I am living in comfort.

قد بَغوْا والبغيُ مَصْرعَةٌ

وسَيَرْدى مِنْهُ كلُّ ردِي

They were hostile and hostility brings downfall,

And because of it every harm of mine will be repelled.

وأَراهُم لو رُزئتهُمُ

فتَّ ذاك الرُّزْء في عَضُدي

And I see them, if they slight me,

That slight will be in my forearm.

وبَكَتْ عيني وخيِّل لي

أَنَّنِي أُفْرِدْتُ مِنْ عُدَدِي

And my eye cried and it seemed to me

That I was separated from my number.

فلهم صَفْحِي ومَغْفِرتي

ولهم ما قد حَوَتْهُ يَدِي

So for them is my clemency and forgiveness

And for them is what my hand has contained.

وبِرَبٍّ قد غنيتُ به

لستُ مُحْتَاجاً إِلى أَحدِ

And by a Lord by whom I have been enriched,

I am not in need of anyone.
