1. يا حَيْرة الحق لما غُيِّب الهادِي

    ووحشة الدين لما أَظلم النَّادي

    O bewilderment of truth when the guide was absent,

    And desolation of religion when the caller grew dark.

  2. يا آل عَبْدِ منافٍ أَيُّ داهيةٍ

    خلا بها الحيُّ بل أَوْدى بها الوَادِي

    O family of Abd Manaf, what misfortune

    That befell the living, nay cast him down the valley.

  3. ويا قريش النَّدى من جَبَّ غاربكم

    ومن رمى نارَ عدنانٍ بإِخْمَاد

    O Quraish, giver of hospitality, from the mount of your stranger

    And who doused the fire of Adnan with extinguishing.

  4. ويا بني ملَّةِ الإِسلام أُمُّكمُ

    ثكلى بأَطْهر مَيْتٍ فوْق أَعْوَادِ

    O nation of Islam, your mother

    Bereaved with the purest dead above the stakes.

  5. فيا شماتة تعطيل وفلْسَفةٍ

    ويا مسرَّة إِشراكٍ وإِلحاد

    So O gloating of disabling and sophistry

    And O joy of polytheism and atheism.

  6. يا ساكتاً تحت أحجار منضدة

    بل ساكناً بين أحشاء وأكباد

    O you who is silent under arranged rocks

    Nay residing between intestines and livers.

  7. يا ساكِناً وَسْط قبْرٍ ظلَّ مَوْضِعُه

    ما بين قصْرِ أَبي ذرٍّ ومِقْدادِ

    O you residing amidst a grave whose place

    Is between the palace of Abu Dharr and Miqdad.

  8. يا واحداً كان كالآلافِ نحْسَبُه

    لا واحداً كان مَحسُوباً بآحَادِ

    O you who was like thousands we reckoned him

    Not one reckoned by units.

  9. يأَيها الطَّاهرُ السَّاري تطهُّره

    في النفس والجِسْم والأَثوابِ والزادِ

    O you the pure, your purity

    Permeating the soul, body, clothes and provisions.

  10. لم يَبْق بعدك من يُرْجَى لتبصرةٍ

    لم يَبق بَعدك من يُدْعَى لإرْشادِ

    None remains after you hoping for guidance

    None remains after you called for direction.

  11. لم يَبْقَ بَعْدَكَ مَنْ يَحْمي صَرِيمتَهُ

    كيدَ العَدُوِّ ويكفي صَوْلَة العادي

    None remains protecting his sanctity

    From the enemy’s plot and the assailant’s attack.

  12. لم يَبْقَ بَعْدَكَ بَحْرٌ فائِضٌ أَبداً

    على تزاحُم شُرَّاب ووُرَّاد

    None remains after you an abundant sea, ever

    Flooded by the jostling of drinkers and churners.

  13. لم يبق بعدك من تَرْوى مَآثِرُه

    حتى بأَلْسُنِ أَعداءٍ وأَضْدادِ

    None remains after you whose exploits

    Quench even the tongues of foes and adversaries.

  14. لم يبق بعدك مَنْ أَخبارُ سُؤدُدِه

    يلهوُ بها الشَّرْب أَو يشدُو بها الشَّادِي

    None remains after you whose news of pillars

    Amuse wine or the singer sings.

  15. لم يَبْقَ بَعْدَكَ مَنْ إِنْ قَامَ في جَدَل

    أَمدَّه الله من نصْرٍ بأَمْدادِ

    None remains after you who if he argues

    God supports him with victory and supplies.

  16. لم يَبْقَ بَعْدَكَ من بالفضْل أَجْمَعُه

    يَبْدُو وَيخْتِمُ فهُو الخاتم البَادِي

    None remains after you who in merit he gathers

    Apparent in the beginning and ending demonstrations.

  17. فإِن طلبْتُ بديلاً منك أَو عوضاً

    في العالمين لقد أَتعبت رُوَّادِي

    If I sought an alternative or compensation for you

    In both worlds, I have burdened frequenters.

  18. تبكي السماءُ لشمْسٍ منْك مُشْرقة

    تَحْتَ التُّراب ونَجْم منك وَقَّاد

    The sky cries for a sun shining from you

    Under the soil and your star that guided.

  19. ويَلْطم الدِّينُ خدَّيْه ومفْرقَه

    من بعدِ تَخْريق أَثْواب وأَبْراد

    And religion slaps its cheeks and temple

    After tearing of clothes and shedding innocence.

  20. وقد بكت سُوَرُ القرآنِ فاستَمِعُوا

    شَهِيقَ نُون بسمع القَلْب أَو صَادِ

    The chapters of Qur’an cried so hear

    The moan of “noon” and “saad” by the heart’s hearing.

  21. وأَعْوَلَتْ حَلَبٌ إِعوال ثَاكِلة

    حتى لَقَدْ سُمْعَتْ مِنْ أَرضِ بَغْدَادِ

    And Halab howled the howl of a bereaved mother

    It was heard from the land of Baghdad.

  22. تقولُ وَاحرَّ أَحْشَائِي عَلَى وَلَد

    قد كان أَنْجَبَ أَبْنائِي وأَوْلادِي

    It says, “Woe to my intestines for a son

    Who was the best of my sons and children.”

  23. ومصرُ أَثكلُ منها غيْرَ أَنَّ لها

    بالقبْر تنْفِيسَ أَحْزانٍ وأَكْمَادِ

    And Egypt, though it is consoled

    By the grave venting of sorrows and agonies.

  24. والعِلْمُ يَصْرخُ واويْلاه مِن قدر

    أَمات أَنْجدَ أَعواني وأَنْجَادِي

    And knowledge screams “Woe to me

    From fate that killed the best of my aides.”

  25. والشَّرْعُ لمَّا التقى بالدَّهْرِ وبَّخهُ

    وَقال وَيْلك قدْ أَشْمَتَّ حُسَّادِي

    And Islamic law, when it met fate, blamed it

    And said “Woe unto you, you have delighted my enemies.”

  26. والصومُ قدْ قال لهْفي من لهاجِرَتي

    واللَّيلُ قدْ قال وَيْلي مَنْ لأَورَادِي

    Fasting said “Alas my fervor.”

    And night said “Woe is me, who will perform my rituals.”

  27. وللملائِكِ حَووَليْ نعْشِه زجَلٌ

    ملءُ مَسَامِعِ أَغْوارٍ وأَنْجَادِ

    And for the angels enclosing his bier, a funeral dirge

    Filling the valleys and heights with laments.

  28. تزاحموا تحت أَعضاءٍ مُطهَّرةٍ

    لينقلُوها لآباءٍ وأَجْدادِ

    Crowding under purified limbs

    To carry them to fathers and ancestors.

  29. أَعطى البِشارَة رِضْوانٌ بِمَقْدِمه

    مَعْ أَنَّه كان يَرْجُو أَنَّه الفادِي

    Ridwan gave him good tidings upon his arrival

    Though he had hoped to be his redeemer.

  30. بل ليت أَنِّي أَنا الفادِي لِمُهْجَتِهِ

    بمُهْجَتي وبأَمْوالي وَأَوْلادِي

    Rather, would that I were his redeemer

    With my soul, wealth and children.

  31. قلْبي عَليْه أَسيرٌ ما له فَرَجٌ

    صبْري عَلَيْه قتيلٌ مَا له وَادِي

    My heart is captive to him, with no relief

    My patience upon him is slain, with no course.

  32. لَوْ عَاشَ لي كَانَ أَدْنَاني وقرَّبني

    للهِ لكن أَرَادَ الله إِبْعَادِي

    Had he lived he would have been my close friend and brought me near,

    But God wanted to distance me.

  33. قد كان يسعِفُني علماً ويُسْعِدُني

    فضنَّ دَهري بإِسعَافي وإِسعَادي

    He would help me with knowledge and bring me joy,

    But my fate was stingy with my aid and joy.

  34. وأَنَّ نَفْسِيَ لمَّا مَاتَ عَالِمةٌ

    بأَنَّ يَومَ شَقَائِي يَومُ مِيلادِي

    And my soul knew when he passed

    The day of my misery is the day of my birth.

  35. نُوُحوا عَلَيْه فَمَا أَنْتُم بِغيْبَتِه

    إِلاَّ سَوَائم أَنْعامٍ وأَذْوَادِ

    Mourn him, for you without him

    Are like cattle and beasts of burden.

  36. وابْكوا عليه بأَجْفانٍ مقرَّحة

    تهْمِي بأَزْوَاجِ دمْع لا بأَفْرَادِ

    And cry for him with ulcerated eyelids

    That drip pairs of tears, not solitary.

  37. سَقى ضرِيحَك رضْوانٌ ومغْفِرةٌ

    ولا أَقول سَقاك الرائِحُ الغَادِي

    Ridwan and forgiveness watered your tomb

    I do not say the passing wind quenched you.

  38. فأَنت في التُّرْبِ حَيٌّ مُدْرِكٌ فرِحٌ

    ترْنُو لشخْصِي بَلْ تُصغِي لإِنْشادِي

    For you are alive in the soil, aware and delighted

    You pay heed to my persona, nay listen to my chant.

  39. مَعِي أَراهُ وفي البَيْداءِ حُفْرته

    يا حرَّ قلْبَاه مِنْ ذا الحاضِرِ البَادِي

    With me I see him, and in the desert his grave,

    O the fervor of a heart for one present yet departed.

  40. لي كُلَّ يَوْمٍ مَعَ الأَيام نائبةٌ

    تسْطُو فتفْرِسُ أَشبَالِي وآسَادِي

    For me each day, with days, a misfortune

    Pounces, preying on my lions and wolves.

  41. تأتي إِليَّ على وعدٍ نوائِبُهُ

    وطالما طرَقتني لا بمِيعَاد

    His calamities come to me on a promise

    Though often they surprise me without appointment.

  42. متى أَردتم خُذُوا أَخْبَارَ سَيِّدِكُم

    عنِّي فإِنيَ أَرْوِيها بإِسْنادِ

    Whenever you wish, take news of your master

    From me, for I narrate them with authority.
