أَذُمُّ زمَاناً حال بيني وبينَه

وعوَّضَنِي مِن سَهْلِ عَيشي بصَعْبه

Time stood between me and him for a while

And replaced my easy life with hardship

وأَخْرَجَنِي بالبَيْن من عَيْن مَالكي

فيا ليتَ شِعري هَلْ حلَلْتُ بقلبه

And took me away from the spring of my bliss

Oh, if only I knew, did I find solace in his heart?

وما أَنَا مَنْ يَشْتَاقُ تقبيلَ كفِّه

ولكنَّني أَشْتَاقُ تقبيلَ تُرْبِه

It's not that I long for kissing his hand

But rather, I long for kissing his soil

وما أسفي إِلاَّ على قُرب ملكِه

وما حَزَنِي إِلاَّ على مُلك قُرْبِه

I only grieve for his kingdom being near

My sorrow is only for losing the nearness of his realm

ورونقُ شخْصِ الجودِ في يوم سِلمِه

وإِشْرَاقُ وجْه النَّصر في يوم حَرْبه

The luster of the face of generosity on the day of his peace

And the radiance of the face of victory on the day of his war

وأَما الأَيادي فَهْي عِنْدي وفي يَدي

وما غَفِلت عن طِيبِ عَيْشي وطيبه

As for the hands, they are with me and in my hands

I was not negligent of my good life and its goodness

مواردُ كانت حاضراتِ بمحضري

ومُذ غِبْتُ فوق أَعناقِ سُحْبهِ

Resources were readily available in my presence

Since I was gone above the clouds
