1. قد كان ما كان من جَهْلِي وطغيَانِي

    وجاءَ ما جاءَ من نُسْكِي وإِيمَاني

    The ignorance and tyranny I once possessed

    And the piety and faith that later progressed

  2. وسُرَّ من بَعْدِ غمِّ النفسِ مَلكي

    واغتمّ بعد سرور النفس شَيطَانِي

    My kingdom rejoiced after the soul's grief

    And my devil grieved after the soul's relief

  3. فما المعمَّمُ بعد النُّسْكِ مِنْ أَرَبِي

    ولا المُقَنَّع بعد الزُّهد مِنْ شاني

    The scholar is no nobler after his knowledge

    Nor the ascetic greater after his abandon.

  4. نَسيتُ إِلفاً بَخِيلاً لَيْسَ يَذْكُرُني

    بذكرِ ربٍّ كَرِيمٍ لَيْسَ يَنْسَانِي

    I forgot a miserly companion who won't remember me

    With the mention of a Kind Lord who won't forget me

  5. وخِفْتُ عِصْيانَ من لو شاءَ أَهْلَكَني

    واخترتُ طاعةَ من لو شاءَ أَنْشَانِي

    And I feared disobeying One who if He willed could destroy me

    And I chose obeying One who if He willed could honor me

  6. وعِفْتُ دُنْيَا تُسَمَّى من دَنَاءَتها

    دُنْيا وإِلاَّ فَما مَكْرُوهُها الدَانِي

    I shunned a world called base for its lowness

    Else it has no despised aspect for the lowly

  7. ضحكْتُ فيها وإِنِّي قد بَكَيْتُ بها

    فالجهلُ أَضْحَكَني والعَقْل أَبْكاني

    I laughed in it though I had cried over it

    Ignorance made me laugh, wisdom made me cry

  8. هذا وقد نلتُ ما لا نَالَه أَحَدٌ

    في الدَّهرِ مِنْ نيل أَوطارِي بأَوْطَاني

    I attained what none attained in times

    Of attainment or dwellings with dwellings

  9. محجَّبُ العِزِّ لا تَعْلو يدٌ لِيَدِي

    قهراً ويَعْدوُ عَلَى السُّلْطانِ سُلْطَاني

    Veiled with honor no hand contends against my hand

    Or rules over my rule and station

  10. بين العَزِيزَيْنِ من جاهٍ ومن كرمٍ

    إِلى الرفيعينِ من قدرٍ ومن شَانِ

    Between two mighty ones of glory and nobility

    And two lofty ones of worth and stature

  11. أُكْسَى وأَخْلعُ أَثوابَ النَّعيم فكَم

    جرَّرتُ للتِّيه أَذيالي وأَرداني

    I am clothed and robed in garbs of bounty after

    Dragging the trains of my robes in wilderness

  12. منعَّمٌ بين جنَّات مُعجَّلَةٍ

    وضُمَّ ما شِئْتَ من حُورٍ وولدان

    Blessed amidinstant gardens and whatever virgins and youths I desire

    And how many a beauty did captivate me without war

  13. وكم سبَتْني بِلا حَرْبٍ وكم فَتَنتْ

    إِنْسَانَ عَيْنيَ فيها عينُ إِنْسَان

    And tempted the human weakness in my eye

    And how oft the sun of day with it

  14. وطَالما أَصْبَحَتْ شمسُ النَّهارِ بِها

    ضجيعةً وبُدُورُ التِّم نُدْمَاني

    Lay down to rest and the stars of night grew intoxicated

    I tire and weary of embraces and kisses

  15. أَعْيَا وأَتعبُ من ضمٍّ ومن قُبَلٍ

    فأَستريحُ إِلى راح ورَيْحَانِ

    And find rest in quiescence and delight

    Then I refrain though if my self-respect

  16. ثم انتهيتُ ولو لم يُنْهِنِي أَنَفي

    من الزمان لكَان الشيْبُ يَنْهَاني

    Did not forbid me grayness would forbid me.

    Grayness has turned the locks of my heart gray

  17. قد شيَّب الشيبُ أَوطارَ الفُؤَادِ كَمَا

    أَبْلَى جَدِيدَ لُبَانَاتِي الجَدِيدَانِ

    As the two new crescents have worn my fresh white temples

    Seek not my love, O twenty-year maid

  18. لا ترغبي يا ابنة العشرينَ في صِلَتي

    إِنَّ الثلاثِينَ هدَّتْ ثُلْثَ أَرْكَاني

    For thirty has toppled a third of my pillars

    Oh, my abundant sorrows and griefs

  19. فيا لكَثْرةِ أَشجاني وأَحْزَاني

    ويا لِقلةِ أَنصاري وأَعْواني

    And little supporters and aiders I have

    Ask the days about me, ask none but them

  20. سَلني عن الدَّهر لا تَسْأَلْ سَوَايَ به

    ولا تسلْنيَ عن همِّي وأَحْزَاني

    And ask not of my anxiety and sorrows

    If I weep then shun my company

  21. وإِن بكَيْتُ فنكِّبْ عن مُجَاوَرَتي

    واحذَرْ وإِيَّاكَ من طُوفَانِ أَجْفَاني

    And beware the flood of my streaming eyes

    As for my tears, fear and vigilance

  22. أَمَّا دُمُوعِي وخَوْفي مَعْ مُراقَبَتي

    فمن ذُنُوبي وطُغْياني وعِصْياني

    They are from my sins, tyranny and disobedience

    Worry, tears, fear and begging hands

  23. همّ ٌودَمْعٌ وخَوْفٌ وافتقارُ يَدٍ

    هذي خُصُومٌ وما هَذَانِ خَصْمانِ

    These are disputants, and what disputants!

    To you my eyes, O world, to you my separation

  24. إِليكِ عنيَ يا دُنْيَا إِليك فَلي

    في وصْل مِثْلِكِ شَانُ المبغِضِ الشَّاني

    In your union the hater delights like lovers

    In the loneliness of the grave and worms dwelling in it

  25. في وَحْشَةِ القَبْر والدُّودِ المقيمِ به

    شُغْلٌ لِنَفْسِيَ عن دَارِي وبُسْتَاني

    Are occupation for my soul from my homes and gardens

    I speak of my homes and neighbors in self-deceit

  26. أَقول دَارِي وجِيراني مُغَالَطةً

    والقبرُ دَارِيَ والأَمْوَاتُ جِيرَاني

    For the grave is my home and the dead are my neighbors

    I will widen the grave with righteous deeds, repair it

  27. سأُوسِعُ القَبْرَ بالأَعمالِ أُصلحُها

    جُهْدي وأَلْبَسُ زُهْدِي قَبْلَ أَكفَاني

    And wear my asceticism before my shroud

    I responded to the call of God when He called

  28. وقد أَجَبْتُ نِدَاءَ اللهِ حِينَ دَعَا

    وقلتُ لَبَّيْكَ عن شوْقي وأَشْجَاني

    And said: Here I am! out of yearning and ecstasy

    If I am rightly guided while others stray in blindness

  29. فإِنْ رَشَدْت وغَيْرِي في غوايَتِه

    جهلاً فإِنِّي بصيرٌ بَيْنَ عُمْيان

    I am seeing amid the blind out of ignorance

    And if I leave the world and its pleasures willingly

  30. وإِن خَرَجْتُ من الدُّنْيَا ولذَّتِها

    طوعاً فيا ربْحَ بَخْتيَ بَعْدَ خُسْرانِ

    What a profitable loss after ruin!

    Why should I grieve over the world and its pleasures

  31. وكيف آسي على الدُّنْيَا ولذَّتِها

    وقد تعوَّضْتُ بالبَاقي عَنِ الفَاني

    When I gained the Everlasting in place of the vanishing?
