تأَذَّى بِلَحْظي مَنْ أُحِبُّ وَقالَ لي

أَخافُ منَ الْجُلاَّسِ أَنْ يَفْطِنوا بِنا

My beloved was hurt by my glance, and he said to me

"I fear that our sitting together will make them suspicious of us"

وَقالَ إِذا كَرَّرْتَ لَحْظَكَ دُونَهُمْ

إِليَّ فَما يَخْفى دَليلُ مُريبِنا

And he said "If you keep glancing only at me amongst them

Then our secret love will not remain hidden"

فَقُلْتُ بُلِينا بالرَّقيبِ فَقال ما

بُلِينا وَلكِنَّ الرَّقيبَ بُلي بِنا

So I said "We are tormented by this watchfulness" and he replied

"We are not tormented, but the watchman is tormented by us"
