1. Your eyes let the devil into my heart.

    Eyes are surely the devils’ helpers.

  2. How many nights I lay curled up with burning anguish,

    complaining to the star until it nearly complained of me.

  3. How lovely is the gazelle that has captivated me!

    And who has ever seen a gazelle and remained uncharmed?

  4. It reveals a growth of daisies among the daughters of a mouth,

    called by a name like the little daughters of the vines.

  5. And two cheeks are the apples of my kisses;

    so leave aside the apples of the gardens and turn to me.

  6. The enchantment of your eyes forbids me and commands me,

    and the roses of your cheeks tempt me and draw me on.

  7. Even if I sold my faith and bought with it

    the world, I would never sell my faith in you for something base.

  8. I ask God’s forgiveness—no, by God, the verses of Yā Sīn

    have not helped against the spell of his eyes.

  9. Glory to the One who created all things:

    could He have shaped that body from clay?

  10. People of Ṣabra, my loved ones are among you;

    if you have any patience to spare, console me.

  11. I profess the religion of love—alas for you!

    And God has said, “There is no compulsion in religion.”

  12. My master, do not let my enemies rejoice at my plight; and if

    you forget my words, remember Aaron’s words.

  13. Reckon the worth of your love by the years of my life I have spent;

    by God, even if my life were the treasure of Qārūn.

  14. If I owned my soul, you who torment it,

    I would offer it to you among the sacrifices.
