1. هدَّ الحِمام لآل عبدِ مَناف

    جبلاً أَنافَ عُلاه أَيَّ مَنافِ

    The pigeons cooed for the family of Abd Manaf

    A mountain with lofty peaks, what peaks!

  2. أَودى بأَبلج من ذؤابةِ هاشمٍ

    يَجلو بغرَّته دُجى الأَسدافِ

    Bearing the bright sun of Hashim

    Dispelling with its light the gloom of night

  3. بالضَيغم الفتَّاك بَل بالصارم ال

    بَتّاك بل بالجوهر الشفّافِ

    With a deadly Indian sword, nay a destructive blade

    A lethal blade, nay a polished gem

  4. من لَم يَزَل من بأسِه وَنوالِه

    مُردي العداة وموردَ الأَضيافِ

    One who never ceased to attack and feed his guests

    Vanquishing foes and welcoming guests

  5. من لَم يزل للواردين حياضَه

    ذا ماء يُرويهم بعذبٍ صافِ

    One whose basin for guests always brimmed

    With sweet limpid water to quench their thirst

  6. من لم يزل للقاصدين جنابه

    رحبَ الفِناء موطّأَ الأَكنافِ

    One whose court was always open

    With a spacious hall and folded tents

  7. مَن لَم يَزَل للطالبينَ علومَه

    بالكشف يُغنيهم عن الكشّافِ

    One who always enlightened those who sought his knowledge

    Sparing them the need for an interpreter

  8. من لم يزل يُملي جَليلُ جَميله

    أَوصافَه العُليا على الوصّافِ

    One whose sublime traits his panegyrists extolled

    Dictating his lofty descriptions to the writers

  9. من كانَ يطربُ من سؤال عُفاتِه

    طربَ النَّشاوى من كؤوسِ سُلافِ

    One whose virtuous character brought delight

    Like drinking from cups of the choicest wine

  10. لِلَّه أَيَّ رزيَّةٍ رُزِئت به

    لا يُستقال تلافُها بتلافِ

    By God! What a catastrophe his loss has been

    Nothing can compensate for its devastation

  11. رغمت أنوفُ السَمهريَّةِ والظُبى

    لمّا أصِبنَ بمُرغمِ الآنافِ

    The noses of Samhar and wild beasts were rubbed in the dust

    When they were struck by the blows of his sword

  12. بالموردِ السُمر العِطاش من الكُلى

    يومَ النِزال ومُطعم الأَسيافِ

    On the day of battle, the thirsty drank their fill

    From the red drink and the tips of swords

  13. وَتقوَّضت عَمدُ المواهب وَالنَدى

    لما رُزئن بواهبِ الآلافِ

    The pillars of bounty and dew collapsed

    When they were demolished by the grantor of thousands

  14. ومطوِّقِ الأَعناق من أَفضاله

    بثقالِ أَطواقٍ عليه خِفافِ

    And the necks were collared by his favors’ chains

    The weighty necklaces seemed light as feathers

  15. أَقُريشُ قد ذهبَ الإِلافُ فمن لكم

    من بعد أَحمدَ في الورى بإلافِ

    O Quraish! Harmony has gone so who will unite you

    After Ahmad as he had done before?

  16. أَبني الهواشم إِنَّ طودكم هوى

    وأَرى النفوسَ على هَواهُ هَوافي

    O Hashimites! Your assault brought ruin

    And I see souls madly desire it

  17. ذهب الَّذي أَحيا وجدَّدَ فضلُه

    لبني النبيّ مآثرَ الأَسلافِ

    Gone is he who revived and renewed

    The glories of the Prophet's family from past generations

  18. وَطَوى الرَدى من كان ينشرُ في الوغى

    حُللَ الرَدى قسراً على الأَعطافِ

    And fate has shrouded in dust him who in battle

    Used to clothe his foes in coats of mail

  19. إِنّي لأُقسمُ عن يَمينٍ بَرَّةٍ

    قسمَ المحقِّ وَلَستُ بالحلّافِ

    I swear a solemn oath not given lightly

    An oath of truth, no false words from me

  20. ما خصَّ رزؤك يا اِبن فاطم عصبةً

    لكنَّه عمَّ الوَرى بتلافِ

    No special group gained from your company

    Rather you blessed all people universally

  21. هذي جموعُ المكرمات بأَسرِها

    فصم المنونُ وِفاقَها بِخلافِ

    Then death severed their continuity

    After you the sea of glory and loftiness went dry

  22. عادت بحارُ المجد بعدَك والعُلى

    يَبَساً وآذنَ ماؤُها بجَفافِ

    Its water giving way to drought

    And the souls of the noble became disconsolate

  23. وَغدت نفوسُ أولي العُلى معتلَّةً

    لما ذهبتَ ولم تجد من شافِ

    When you left without one to bring solace

    The lamps of hope changed into gloom

  24. وَبَنو الرجاء تبدَّلت أَنوارُها

    بغياهِبٍ وشِهادُها بذُعافِ

    Their glow into smoldering wicks

    And the pillars of every tribe crumbled

  25. وَتَضَعضَعت أَركانُ كلِّ قبيلةٍ

    وتشبَّه الأَذنابُ بالأَعرافِ

    The riffraff resembling noblemen

    Even the lions, for your sake, were left without fury

  26. والأسدُ قد فقدت لأجلك بأسَها

    فغدت براثنُهنَّ كالأَظلافِ

    Their claws now like worn nails

    From whom can generosity, bounty or grace be expected

  27. من يُرتَجى للجودِ بعدَك والنَدى

    والفضلِ والإِسعاد والإِسعافِ

    Or aid and rectitude henceforth?

    Alas! All noble qualities have surely

  28. هَيهات إِنَّ المكرُماتِ جميعَها

    طارَت بهنَّ قوادمٌ وخَوافِ

    Flown away on wings in alarm

    O gem the days granted us awhile

  29. يا دُرَّةً سمح الزَمانُ لنا بها

    حيناً وأَرجعها إلى الأَصدافِ

    Then snatched you back to the shells

    You were the finest of all blessings

  30. لا كانَ رزؤك في الرَزايا إِنَّه

    شَرَقُ الكرام وغصَّةُ الأَشرافِ

    The acme of nobility and chieftains' pride

    Wondrous that when gloom covered your face

  31. عَجَباً لوجهك كيف إِذ غَشَّوه لَم

    يغشَ العيونَ بنوره الخَطّافِ

    Its light still pierced liked a flirtatious glance

    Wondrous that your bier did not make friends collapse

  32. عجباً لنعشِك كيف لم يُوهِ الطُلى

    لما غَدا يَعلو عَلى الأكتافِ

    When it rose carried upon shoulders

    Wondrous that your grave-digger did not bury you

  33. عَجَباً لمودعِك المقابرَ كيفَ لم

    يودِعكَ بين جوانحٍ وَشِغافِ

    Between his own ribs, pressed to his breast

    Wondrous that over your grave there rises not

  34. عجباً لقبركَ كيف لا يَعلو على ال

    قَمَرين في الإِشراق والإِشرافِ

    Two moons, equal in brilliance and splendor

    The people were amazed to see your funeral

  35. فُجئَ الأَنامُ عِشاً بِنعشك سائِراً

    فتبادَروا أَركانَه بطوافِ

    So they hurried to circle around it

    They emptied their pockets over you and hastened

  36. وَفَروا جيوبَهمُ عليك وَبادَروا

    من حسرةٍ عَضّاً على الأَطرافِ

    To bite their fingertips in regret

    Tears flowed from their eyelids

  37. وَمَروا من الأَجفانِ سحبَ مدامعٍ

    تَبكي عليكَ بهاطلٍ وكّافِ

    Crying torrentially over you

    No wonder, for in your precincts they lived in plenty

  38. لا غروَ إِذ كانوا بسوحكَ في غنىً

    عَن مربعٍ نَضِرٍ وعن مُصطافِ

    Without need for a garden or scenic lookout

    If they shrouded you, your body always donned

  39. إِن كفَّنوكَ فإِنَّ جسمَك لَم يَزل

    يَختالُ في بُردي تُقىً وعَفافِ

    A silken cloak of decency and virtue

    If they washed you, you will always remain

  40. أَو غسَّلوكَ فَلَن تَزال مُطَهّر ال

    أَقوال والأَفعال والأَوصافِ

    Pure in word, deed and attribute

    If they embalmed you, you will stay forever scented

  41. أَو حنَّطوكَ فَلا تَزال مطيَّباً

    طيباً تضوعُ به قُرىً وَفَيافي

    An aroma permeating villages and wilds

    God sent blessings and good pleasure before their prayers

  42. صلّى عليك اللَهُ قبل صَلاتِهم

    وَحباكَ بالرِضوان والأَلطافِ

    And graced you with acceptance and kindness

    My master, father, hear the call

  43. يا سيِّدَ الآباءِ سَمعاً لاِبنك ال

    مُضنى فقد أَضناه طولُ تجافِ

    Of your suffering son, worn by long estrangement

    You were righteous and caring towards me

  44. قد كنتَ بي برّا وكنتَ مواصلاً

    وَجَميلُ بِرِّك كافلٌ لي كافِ

    And your kindness was all-encompassing

    But today, why have you shunned me for so long

  45. فاليومَ ما لكَ قد أَطلتَ تجنُّبي

    وَهجرتَني هجرَ الحَبيبِ الجافي

    And abandoned me like an indifferent lover?

    You never accustomed me to your aloofness

  46. أَجَفاً وما عوَّدتني منك الجَفا

    وَعَظيمُ حزني ليس عنك بخافِ

    And my deep sorrow for you knows no bounds

    But no! The hand of fate has folded you

  47. لا بل طوتكَ يَدُ البِلى ومُنِعت عن

    ردِّ الجوابِ لسائلٍ ولعافِ

    And you are unable respond to a questioning petitioner

    If I could ransom myself for you

  48. وَلَو اِستَطعتُ لكَ الفِداء لكُنتهُ

    وَوقيتُ جسمك من ثَرى الأَجدافِ

    I would save your body from the soil of graves

    But I will remain true to you

  49. لكنَّني باقٍ على حُسن الوَفا

    حتّى أَراك به على الأَعرافِ

    Until we meet at the final judgment

    God will always grace you with mercy

  50. لا زال يُتحفُكَ الإلهُ برحمةٍ

    من فضله بلطائف الإتحافِ

    And honor you with the finest gifts

    And on my part, greetings forever

  51. وَعليكَ منّي ما حَييتُ تحيَّة

    تغشى ضَريحَك دائماً وتوافي

    Will enshroud your tomb continuously
