1. Greet the morning, for the breeze has begun to murmur,

    and dawn has gleamed—its star shining forth.

  2. Deck out the cup, O boon companion,

    for the wine is now sweet to drink.

  3. Drink beside a Garden of Bliss,

    whose creed springs from a radiant cheek;

  4. or let my heart wander madly for her—

    for each one acts according to his own creed.

  5. Love of fair women has a realm of its own;

    not everyone who enters can attain it.

  6. How many mountains it has leveled in its path,

    and many a free man it has enslaved!

  7. So resign yourself to the impossibility of union,

    and guard the secret, lest someone divulge it.

  8. Depart, if you are not going to stay:

    for love’s prize has become hard to attain.

  9. I am one who, in loving beauties,

    has only lately become acquainted—a hadith in an unbroken chain:

  10. all have laid down their weapons before me,

    yielded to me, and come forward.

  11. Mine is al-Muʿallā, highest of the gaming arrows;

    so how could I hide this and feign ignorance?

  12. My utterance heals the ailing—

    if you do not believe it, put it to the test.
