He remembers and remembrance kindles longing, O brother of passion

    Pastures between Ghawir and Najd

A captive suffering the vicissitudes of fate

Events that do not cease to flow as intended

If from the direction of Ramah, a lightning bolt troubles him

He sheds tears of sorrow from his eyelids on his cheek

He yearns for the dwellings of Layla in Dhi Al-Ghada

But where is Al-Ghada and how far is the longing one from India?

And he weeps with an eyelid whose longing tears flow

When a leaf rustles on the branches of the wild rue

It is the abode whose pastures time has not caused to vanish

Where the valleys, when thunder rumbles, are constrained

Wherein alights Ghaidaa of the clan of Aamir

Like the eve of the returning gaze, smooth of shoulder

The swagger of youth makes it sway

As the morning breeze made sweet, pliant mimosa sway

It was awakened by virtuous, noble clans of Aamir

To the loftiest glory and most honourable lineage

Oh would that I knew—but wishes are futile delusions—

And the injustice of fate guides the heart as it will guide—

Will that epoch of reunion ever come to pass

When ardor will smoulder within breasts that now are desolate?

Shall we live despite time and erstwhile

The springs of reunion will flow, now hindered by separation?
