    For they are the judging eyes, if they flirt, and if

    They wink, then they are the lofty gaze

  5. يا عاذلي اخلع ثياب النسك عنك فكم

    لي في الهوى والصبا اضحت خلاعات

    O my reproacher, take off your monk's clothes

    For I have in love and youth become licentious

  6. واخلت على رشف ثغر الحب مجتهدا

    فهو الذي فيه للارواح راحات

    And I frequented the wine's brim diligently

    For it is where spirits find comfort

  7. ولا تعب في الهوى سكري علي فلي

    بالفرق والفرع صبحات وغبقات

    Do not blame me for the intoxication of love

    For dawn and twilight have their ebbs and flows

  8. للّه اوقات عيش بالسعود مضت

    كأنما الدهر هاتيك اللييلات

    By God, times of living in bliss have passed

    As if those nights were this long life

  9. وحبذا الخال فوق الخد منه لقد

    بدت لنا نفحات عنبريات

    Blessed is the mole above the cheek, for it

    Seemed to us ambergris' breaths

  10. والشمس من فلك الاكوان طالعة

    يبدو لها من سنا الاقداح هالات

    The sun rises from the sphere of the universe

    Halos of cups' brightness shine on it

  11. وللربيع خيام قد فرشن بها

    من المطارف بسط سندسيات

    For spring, tents are pitched and furnished

    With brocade, outspread silks

  12. يفوح ند الندى منها ويعبق من

    مجامر الزهر في الاذبال نفحات

    The dew's scent emanates, the flowers'

    Fragrance wafts from the branches

  13. والروض في حلل تجلى عرائسه

    كأنهنّ اذا ما ملن قينات

    The garden in its finery, its brides appear

    As if they are beauties when they gather

  14. والشمع نواره الزاهي وقد سطعت

    عند الصباح لنا منه اشعات

    The candle's radiant light shone

    At dawn, rays reached us from it

  15. وللغصون على تلك الدفوف اذا

    ما شبب الريح رقصات وميلات

    The branches, when the wind stirs them, have

    Dances and swaying motions

  16. والماء تسمع نقرا في الاصول له

    وللهزار على العيدان نغمات

    You can hear the flowing water murmuring

    In the streams, the rivulets have melodies

  17. والاقحوان ثغور زانها شنب

    يحلو لعاشقها منه ارتشافات

    The lips are adorned with down, sweet

    To their lover are sips from them

  18. والنرجس الغض لم تبرح تغازلنا

    عيونه ولها بالجفن غمزات

    The tender narcissi continue flirting with us

    Winking at our eyes playfully

  19. والقضب للصلح مالت بعدما شمخت

    وعندها كان قبل اليوم وقفات

    The slender wine glasses stand tall again

    After arrogance, respectful once more

  20. سمر رشاق مغاني اللهو قد عمرت

    بالحسن فهي الحسان العامريات

    Dark-complexioned singers of merriment lived

    Beautifying it, they are its adornments

  21. ومجلس الانس بالافراح تمّ وقد

    تكاملت بالهنا فيه المسرات

    The gathering of friends is complete with joys

    Pleasures perfected by intimacy

  22. اوقات بسط على بسط الربيع بها

    نعمت دهرا وللذات اوقات

    Times have spread the spring's carpets

    Gifting us days, for life is hours

  23. خذ من زمانك ما قد طاب مغتنماً

    ساعات لهوك ان العمر ساعات

    Take from your time what is pleasant

    Hours for your amusement, life is hours

  24. واستجلها ثوب ياقوت مشعشعة

    راقت ورقت بها تلك الزجاجات

    Dress it in a ruby-studded garment

    Pleasant and delicate were those glasses

  25. حمراء آنست نارا من جوانبها

    قلب الكليم له منها اقتباسات

    Red, fiery, its edges lit up

    The tinder's heart drew sparks from it

  26. وفي الدنان عليها قد مضت حقب

    وعصرها فيه اخبار فديمات

    In the goblets, epochs have passed

    Its pressing produced aged wine

  27. وعاد عاذلها مع تبع تبعا

    وكم نفتها الهبات الكسرويات

    Her lover returned to her like old times

    How often the north winds drove it away

  28. كأنما كأسها ثغر زها وبه

    ذاك الحباب الثنايا اللؤلؤيات

    As if her cup were a radiant mouth

    In it those pearly, curved pearls

  29. نعم ولولا ثغور كالاقاح زهت

    ما شاقني في الدجا منك ابتسامات

    Yes, were it not for lips like buds, bright

    Your smiles in darkness would not have lured me

  30. يديرها بدر تم وهي شمس ضحى

    كأنما هي في يمناه مرآة

    The full moon runs it, and it is the sun of morning

    As if it were a mirror in its right hand

  31. اقسمت من فرقه بالفجر اذ ظهرت

    من نوره في الضحى للناس آبات

    I swear by the dawn when it appeared

    From its light, signs shone for people

  32. ما للغزالة في الاشراق بهجته

    ولا لها مثل هاتيك النفاتات

    The gazelle has no joy in daybreak

    Nor grace like those glances

  33. تشوقني فوق خديه عوارضه

    كأنها في حواشي الطرس غلطات

    Her eyelashes above the cheek attract me

    As if they were errors in transcription

  34. غصن اذا مال في ثوب الدلال يرى

    لعجبه ولذبل الهجر شمرات

    A branch, when it bends in the gown of submission, sees

    To its wonder and the withering of separation, shreds

  35. وكيف ارجو انتصارا من لواحظه

    وللقلوب من الاجفان كسرات

    How can I hope for triumph over one whose glance

    And hearts are broken by the separation of eyelids?

  36. باللحسان اما من راحم لفتى

    قضى وما قضيت منه لبانات

    With sweet talk, who will pity a youth

    Who fulfilled nothing of your wishes?

  37. صب لغير هواكم ما صبا دنف

    متيم عينت فيه الصبابات

    Pour for other than your love what clouds poured

    When the clouds aimed their pouring

  38. لم تمطر الدمع درا سحب مقلته

    يا برق لولا الثنايا اللؤلؤيات

    My tears did not rain jewels, O lightning of my eyelid

    Were it not for those curved, pearly gates

  39. يكفي باني اخو وجد قديم هوى

    ما لابتداء صباباتي نهايات

    It suffices me that my passion's course is long

    My yearning has no end, no conclusion

  40. وفيك اقصى مرادي أن أموت جوى

    يا غاية ما لعشقي فيك غايات

    In you is my utmost desire, that I die crazed

    O epitome, my love for you epitomizes love

  41. لا تعجبوا من فتور في لواحظه

    لمرسل اللحظ في الاجفان فترات

    Do not be surprised by languor in his glance

    For the sender of glances has times of weakness
