أطال الله يا مولاي عمرك

وعظم في قتيل الهجر أجرك

My Master, may God prolong your life,

And magnify your reward for the slain of estrangement.

حبيبي ان يكن يرضيك قتلي

فيا بشراي ذا ان كان سرك

My beloved, if my killing pleases you,

Then give me glad tidings, for that is your secret.

حبيبي لي بسيف اللحظ فاقتل

فما انا من يخالف قط امرك

My beloved, kill me with the sword of a glance,

For I am not one who would ever oppose your command.

حبيبي من اباح لديك هجر

ومن هذا الذي بالله غرّك

My beloved, who made estrangement lawful for you,

And who is it that has thus wrongly led you astray?

حبيبي ان يكن من خوف واش

جفاك فقد قبلت اليوم عذرك

My beloved, if fear of scandal has caused

Your abandonment, then I accept your excuse today.

حبيبي لو خيال منك وافى

وجدت بزورة ما كان ضرّك

My beloved, if an apparition of you comes to me,

I would find, in its falseness, that which pains you.

حبيبي اليوم ما اقساك قلبا

على مضنى الهوى وارق خصرك

My beloved, today how merciless is your heart

Towards one wasted away by passion and sleepless from yearning.

حبيبي ان يكن سكناك قلبي

فانك يوسف وسكنت مصرك

My beloved, if my heart is your dwelling,

Then you are Joseph and it is your Egypt.

حبيبي فيك اغراني عذولي

وحذرني صدودك لي وهجرك

My beloved, your charm made me foolish,

And your aloofness warned me against you and your estrangement.

وقال تسل واصبر تلق خيرا

فقلت له كفاني الله شرك

And you said, "Be patient and you will attain goodness."

So I said to you, "May God protect me from your evil."
