راح يرنو مرنح الاعطاف
فهو ظبي النقا وغصن خلاف
He swayed, bending with tenderness,
He is a graceful gazelle and a leaning branch.
كم تلافيت في الغرام هواه
وهو يرضيه بالهوان تلافي
How often I suffered from his passion,
Yet he is pleased by my submission.
صد ظلما ولم يكن لي ذنبٌ
غير ذلي بحبه واعترافي
He was unjust though I had no sin,
Except my confession of loving him.
كيف اخفى الهوى وواشى دموعي
من غرامي اذاع ما هو خافي
How can I hide this love and my tears
When my passion proclaims what's hidden?
انا في الحب لم اخالفه يوما
وهو دون الانام يهوى خلافي
In love I never went against him,
Yet unlike others he loves my opposite.
كلما زدت رقة في هواه
زادني من صدوده والتجافي
The more tender I become in my love,
The more he distances and acts cold.
فرقادي ومقلتي في اختلاف
وسهادي ولوعتي في ائتلافي
My sleeplessness and my distress are at odds,
My pillow and ache are in harmony.
فكأني لدى عروض جفاه
بيت شعر وفيه بعض زحاف
With his harshness it's as if
My poem has some irregularities.
لا تلمني ان اكتفيت غراما
بهواه فغيره ما حلا في
Don't blame me if love for him
Sufficed me, for none other pleased me.
بدر تم صرفت كلي اليه
وهو يسعى لشقوتي في انصرافي
I gave him my all like a full moon,
Yet he seeks to doom me by his indifference.
أبصر الغصن قده ذا اعتدال
فانثنى عنه مائلا في انحراف
I saw the straight branch bend
And turn away leaning askew.
طاف يسعى بكاس فيه وفيه
ذائب التبر فوقه الدر طافي
He circles with a cup that contains
Melted pearls above which gems float.
كم باصداغه وراح لماه
رحت نشوى سوالف وسلاف
How often I kissed his cheeks and went
To have chats and tales with wine.
صائغ الحسن صاغ خاتم فيه
من عقيق وجوهر شفاف
The artful shaper crafted a ring with
Translucent ruby and clear gems.
خده بالعذار في الوضع يحكي
حلة قد تعلقت بسجاف
It adorns his cheek, telling
Of beauty that clings to perfection.
وجهه جامع المحاسن اضحى
فلهذا يطيب فيه اعتكافي
His face gathers all beauty and so
Worshipping it brings me joy.
فهو ظبي اذا رنا بالنفات
وهو غصن اذا انثنى في انعطاف
He is a gazelle whose call is melody,
And a branch that bends with grace.
نسماً انني له عبد ود
لم اخنه لا وابن عبد مناف
Gently, I'm his loving slave,
Never betrayed him, unlike the son of Mina.
كيف شيطان سلوتي فيه اخشى
مع شهاب لدى العلا خطاف
How can this devil I find solace in
Frighten me, with his comet-like brows?
من يداه قد اعربت عن نداه
وتحلى باحسن الاوصاف
His hands showed me his generosity,
Adorned with the finest traits.
وعلى الفتح في المباني تلقى
قد بنى بابه لكل مضاف
In grammatical inflection you find
He built his door open for each annex.
الطويل النجاد رب المعالي
ذو العطا الوافر السريع الوافي
Tall, refined, generous lord
Quick to give fulfilled bounty.
روضة العلم جامع الفضل حلو
ذو بيان محرر كشاف
Garden of knowledge, gathering of merit, sweet
Clear eloquent explainer.
قسما ما اجتديت يمناه الا
وهمى سيل سيبها الوكاف
I swear I never invented praise for him,
My worries are floods, release them!
راحتاه بحر يفيض نوالا
فلهذا يطيب منه اغترافي
His hands are a sea that overflows blessings,
So drinking from them brings me joy.
علمتني اوصافه كل معنى
فلذا جئت بالمعاني اللطاف
All meanings taught me his traits,
Hence I came with refined ideas.
يبذل المال رغبة وسخاء
وترى جمعه من الاشراف
He spends wealth eagerly and generously,
While hoarding it from nobles you see.
وتراه بالقوت يؤثر جودا
وبواسيك بالعطا من كفاف
You find he prefers giving food in charity,
Distributing it brings self-sufficiency.
جوده جوده ولا عيب فيه
غير كسب الثنا وحسن العفاف
His generosity is pure, no fault in it,
Except earning praise and grace.
كعبة البر نحوه جئت اسعى
فحلا لي سعيي به وطوافي
Like the Kaaba I came to him seeking,
So reaching him fulfilled my pilgrimage.
مادحا سرت نحوه فحباني
فحمدت السرى ونظم القوافي
Praising, I walked to him, so he loved me,
I praised the journey and composed poetry.
هاكها ما قوت حروف روي
تسلك السهل ليس سهل الفيافي
Taking the easy, not the convoluted way.
Greetings without any flaw or blemish,
سالمات من كل عيب سمان
طيبات الخلال غير عجاف
Of pure traits, not coarse or rough.
Your highness dressed it in a gown of pride,
قد كساها علاك ثوب فخار
وعرت من زخارف وسخاف
And adorned it with decor unextravagant.
It's the daughter of orderly thought, child of system,
بنت فكر نتيجة ابن نظام
منك تبغي النثار عند الزفاف
From you it seeks scattering at the wedding.
It keeps getting gifted with lexical jewels
لم تزل من جواهر اللفظ تهدى
لعلاكم بدائع الاصناف
Hoping for your unique innovations.
It is like necklaces, beautiful for the refined,
فهي للجيد كالقلائد حسنا
وتراها للسمع كالاشناف
And pleasing like bracelets to the ear.
So live on, safe on each feast and holiday,
فابق واسلم لكل عشر وعيد
في امان من هول يوم المخاف
From the horror of the feared judgment day.
The garden never seemed so beautiful as when
ما بدا الروض يانعاً وشدا من
طائر فوق ايكة هتاف
A bird chirped atop a branch.
