1. من شاءَ أنْ تَسْكَرَ راحٌ بِرَاحْ

    فليَسْقِها خَمْرَ العيون الملاحْ

    Whoever desires intoxication without wine

    Give them the wine of those tantalizing eyes

  2. فإنّها بالسّحرِ ممزوجَةٌ

    أمَا تَرَاها أسكَرَتْ كلّ صاح

    It is mixed with magic so beware

    Do you not see it has intoxicated every reveler

  3. فَما تَرى من شربها في الصّبا

    في رِبْقَةِ السكرِ فهل من سَرَاح

    You see none who drank it while young

    Escape the intoxication, is there any sobriety?

  4. يا من لِموصولِ الشَجا بالشجا

    فليسَ للتّبريح عنه بَرَاح

    O you who is bound to the slender one

    There is no relief from being bound to her

  5. تُشْرِقُ حولَيه الوجوهُ الَّتي

    للبَدرِ والشَمسِ بِهنّ افتضاح

    Faces glow around her

    Shaming the brilliance of moon and sun

  6. وا رحمتا للصبّ من لَوعةٍ

    بكلّ ريّا الحقف صِفرِ الوشاح

    What pity for the young man burning with yearning

    With every wind blowing his yellow cloak

  7. يمشي اختيالُ التيه في مشيها

    فعدِّ عن مَشْيِ قطاةِ البطاح

    She walks proudly swaying

    Beyond the gait of strutting partridges

  8. ألْقَى الهَوَى العذريُّ في حجره

    حرب الغواني والعدى واللّواح

    Passion cast upon her breast

    The wars of love, enmity and separation

  9. لو حملت منه قلوبُ العدى

    جراحَ قلبٍ ما حَمَلْنَ الجراح

    If the hearts of foes carried

    The wounds of a heart, they could not carry the wounds

  10. وجدي غريبٌ ما أرى شَرْحَهُ

    يُوجَدُ في العَينِ ولا في الصّحاح

    My passion is strange, I do not find its explanation

    In the eyes or in books

  11. وإنّما يُحْسِنُ تفسيرَهُ

    دَمْعٌ حِمَى السرّ به مُسْتَباح

    Only tears, hot with hidden passion

    Can rightly interpret it

  12. إنْ مَسّني الضرُّ بِقَرْحِ الهَوى

    فبرءُ دائي في الشرابِ القراح

    If affliction touched me with the wound of love

    My remedy is in the pure wine

  13. من ظَبيةٍ تنفرُ من ظِلّها

    وإن غدا الظلّ عليها وراح

    She is a gazelle who flees from her shadow

    Though the shadow persists and leaves

  14. ففي ثناياها جَنَى ريقةٍ

    يا هل ترشّفْتَ النّدى من أقاح

    In her folds is the saliva of wine

    O you who sipped the dew from vine shoots

  15. كم من يدٍ قد أطْلَعَتْ في يدي

    نجمَ اغتباقٍ بعد نجمِ اصطباح

    How many hands have risen against mine

    A morning star after the star of dawn

  16. من قهوةٍ في الكأسِ لمّاعةٍ

    كالبرقِ شُقّ الغيمُ عنه فلاح

    Coffee in a cup that gleams

    Like lightning rending dense clouds

  17. سخيّة بالسكر مَرّتْ على

    دنانِها بالختم أيْدٍ شحاح

    Generous with sugar passing

    Over his teeth, hands that are miserly

  18. وهي جَمُوحٌ كُلّما أُلْجِمَتْ

    بالماءِ كَفّتْ من غلوّ الجماح

    A mare impossible to rein in

    The more she is watered, the more she rebels

  19. كأنّما الكأسُ طلا مُغْزِلٍ

    مُرْوِيَةٍ بالدَّرّ منه التياح

    As if the goblet were a spindle

    Satisfying him who seeks respite

  20. كأنّما الإبريقُ في جسمها

    يَنفخُ للندمانِ رُوحَ ارتياح

    As if the jug were blowing

    Into his soul the spirit of comfort

  21. في روضةٍ نَفْحَتُها مِسْكَةٌ

    تُهْدى إلينا في جيوب الرّياح

    In a garden whose breeze is fragrant

    Brought to us in the folds of the winds

  22. تميسُ سُكْراً فكأنّ الحيا

    باتَ يُحَيّيها بكاساتِ راح

    Swaying in drunkenness, the serpents

    Revived by wine cups

  23. كأنّما أشجارُها مَنْدَلٌ

    إن لَذَعَتْهُ جَمْرَةُ الشمس فاح

    Its trees like lutes

    If embers of sun touch them, they lament

  24. كأنّما القَطْرُ به لؤلؤٌ

    لم يجرِ منه ثُقَبٌ في نِصَاح

    Its drops like pearls

    None leaked from its buds

  25. كأنّ خُرْسَ الطيرِ قد لُقّنَتْ

    مَدْحَ عليٍّ فتغنّتْ فِصَاح

    As if the silence of birds

    Was taught praise of Ali and so they sang

  26. أرْوَعُ وَضّاحُ المحيّا كما

    قابَلتَ في الإشراقِ بشرَ الصّباح

    Dazzling in beauty, when you appeared at dawn

    You matched the radiant faces of youth

  27. مُعَظَّمُ الملك مُقِرٌّ له

    بالملك حتى كلّ حيّ لَقَاح

    Exalted by the King who conceded

    His kingdom, so complete is obedience

  28. مجتمعُ الطعمينِ في طبعه

    تَوَقُّدُ البأسِ وفَيْضُ السّماح

    In his nature combines

    Kindling of war and overflowing forbearance

  29. يُضْحِكُ في الغرب ثغورَ الظُّبا

    وهنّ يُبْكِينَ عُيُونَ الجراح

    He mocks the enemies’ citadels in the west

    While their eyes weep with wounds

  30. مَهّدَ في المهديتين العلى

    وعمّ منه العدلُ كلّ النّواح

    He prepared both high Minbars

    And justice encompassed all regions

  31. والمُلْكُ إن قامَ به حازِمٌ

    أضحى حِمىً والجدّ غيرُ المزاح

    When led by one decisive

    The kingdom becomes invincible, not jesting

  32. في سرجه اللّيثُ الَّذي لا يُرَى

    مفترساً إلّا ليوثَ الكِفاح

    In his sheath the lion who cannot be seen

    Hunting only the courageous warriors

  33. كأنّما سَلّ على قِرْنِهِ

    من غمده سيفَ القضاءِ المُتَاح

    As if unsheathing upon his spear

    The bare sword of destiny

  34. ذو هِمّةٍ شَطّتْ عُلاه فما

    تُدْركُ بالأبصارِ إلّا التِماح

    With an ambition that transcends horizons beyond

    The perception of eyes but for glimpses

  35. من حِمْيَرِ الأمْلاكِ في منصبٍ

    ذو حسبٍ زاكٍ ومجدٍ صراح

    Among the finest steeds of high rank

    Of pure and radiant lineage

  36. أعاظِمٌ لم يمحُ آثارَهُمْ

    دهرٌ لما خطَّته يمناهُ ماح

    Colossal ones whose traces

    Erased by no era when their right hands brandished swords

  37. هُمُ اليَعاسيبُ لدى طَعْنِهِمْ

    إنْ شوّكوا أيمانَهُمْ بالرّماح

    Lions near his thrust

    Baring their blades with spears

  38. كم لهمُ في الأُسْدِ من ضربَةٍ

    كما سجاياهُ قريع اللّقاح

    Many the blows they dealt lions

    Like cubs burned by flames

  39. إن ابنَ يحيَى قد بَنى للعُلى

    بيتاً فأمسى وهو جارُ الضراح

    Son of Yahya built a lofty edifice

    Spending his night while neighing horses slept

  40. وصالَ بالجِدّ منوطاً به

    جَدٌّ له الفوزُ بضربِ القداح

    He reached the summit through effort

    Winning the race of pure bred horses

  41. والصارمُ الهنديّ يسقي الردى

    فكيفَ إن سُقّيَ مَوتاً ذباح

    The Indian sword quenching thirst of foes

    Imagine when quenching the thirst of slaughterers

  42. آراؤه في الرّوع أعْدى على

    أعدائِهِ من مُرْهَفَاتِ السّلاح

    His opinions terrify enemies more

    Than the sharpened weapons of war

  43. وبطشُهُ ما زالَ عن قُدْرَةٍ

    يُغْمِدُ في الصّفح شِفَارَ الصّفاح

    His might never lacked ability

    To sheathe the blades of polished swords

  44. لا تصدرُ الأنفسُ عن حُبِّهِ

    فإنّهُ للسيّئاتِ اجتراح

    No souls deviate from loving him

    Though he commits ugly sins

  45. كم طامحِ الألحاظِ نَحْوَ العُلَى

    إذا رآهُ غَضَّ لحظَ الطّماح

    Many ambitious eyes toward summits

    Upon seeing him, lowered envious sights

  46. وربّ ذئبٍ ذي مراحٍ فإن

    عنّ له الضرغامُ خلّى المراح

    Like frightened wolves howling

    When the wolf pack calls, they abandon dens

  47. يا طالِبَ المعروفِ ألْمِمْ به

    تَخْلَعْ على المطلوبِ منك النجاح

    O you who seek favor, persevere

    Bestow upon the seeker your success

  48. نداهُ يُغني لا نَدَى غَيرِهِ

    من للذُّنَابَى بِغَنَاءِ الجناح

    His voice sings, no voice like his

    Has wings to sing sublimely

  49. فخلِّ مَنْ شَحّ على وفره

    لا تُقْدَحُ النّارُ بزندٍ شحاح

    Leave one who is miserly in his plenty

    Fires are not sparked by flinty stones

  50. فالربعُ رحبٌ والندى ساكبٌ

    والعيشُ رغدٌ والأماني قماح

    The journey is long, dew pouring down

    Life prosperous, hopes flowering
