أَسلَمَني الدّهُر للرّزايا
وَغَيّر الحادثاتُ قَفْشي
Time has delivered me over to calamities,
and the vicissitudes have altered my bow.
وكنْتُ أمشي ولستُ أعْيَا
فَصِرتُ أعيا ولستُ أمشي
I used to walk and never tire;
now I tire though I do not walk.
كأنّني إذْ كبرتُ نَسْرٌ
يُطعِمُهُ فَرْخُهُ بِعُشِّ
As though, now that I have grown old, I were an eagle
whose chick feeds him in a nest.
