1. مُلاعِبَ البيض بين البيض والأسَلِ

    تلاعبتْ بك حُورُ الأعينِ النُّجُلِ

    The white eggs frolic between the eggs and the nestlings.

    The bright-eyed houri played tricks on you.

  2. فَخُذْ من الرّمْحِ في حرْبِ المها عِوَضاً

    فالطعنُ بالسّمْرِ غيرُ الطّعْنِ بالمقلِ

    So take vengeance with a spear in the battle of love,

    For a stab with a spear is different than a stab with a glance.

  3. كم للعلاقةِ من هيجا رأيتَ بها

    ضراغمَ الغيل قَتْلى من مها الكللِ

    How much passion have I seen in her

    That felled the mighty warriors with the glances of a fawn.

  4. وكم غزالةِ إنْسٍ أنْحلَتْ جسدي

    بِالهجرِ حَتَّى حَكى ما رقّ من غَزَلِ

    And how many human gazelles melted my body

    With estrangement until it told the tale of what was woven from yarn.

  5. ممشوقةً ملْتُ عن حِلْمي إلى سَفَهي

    منها بقدّ مقيمِ الحسن في المَيَلِ

    Crazed, I turned from my forbearance to my foolishness

    By a resident of beauty staying up through the night.

  6. تصدّ بالنفس عن سلوانها بهوى

    عينٍ تكحّل فيها السحرُ بالكحلِ

    I protect my soul from her allurements in love

    Of an eye in which sorcery is applied with kohl.

  7. خداعةُ الصبّ بالآمالِ مرسلةٌ

    إليّ بالعضّ في التفّاحِ والقُبَلِ

    The deception of youth attacks me

    With biting into apples and kisses.

  8. وناطقُ الوجدِ منّي لا يكلِّمُهُ

    منها إذا ما التقينا ساكتُ المللِ

    And my professing passion does not address her

    If we meet - silent in boredom.

  9. يا هَذِهِ ونِدائي دُمْيَةً طَمَعٌ

    في نطقها من فقيدِ اللبِّ مُخْتَبِلِ

    O she, my calling of her is a greedy ambition

    In making her speak, missing the grasp of understanding.

  10. أرى سِهامَ لحاظٍ منكِ تَرْشُقُني

    أفي جُفونكِ رامٍ من بني ثُعَلِ

    I see the arrows of her glances assailing me -

    Is there an archer among the sons of Tha'labah in her eyelids?

  11. بل ضَعْفُ طرفك في سفكِ الدماءِ له

    أضعافُ ما للظُّبا والنّبْلِ والأسَلِ

    Rather, the weakness of her glance in shedding blood

    Is manifold what the deer, arrows and spears possess.

  12. إِنِّي امرؤٌ في ودادي ذو محافظةٍ

    فما يَرَى في وفائي الخلُّ من خلَلِ

    I am a man who is guarded in his love,

    So no defect is seen in my loyalty, not a gap.

  13. وعارِضٍ مَدّ عَرْضَ الجوِّ وانسَبَلَتْ

    في وجنةِ الأرضِ منه أدْمُعُ السَّبلِ

    A critic extended the breadth of calumny and tears

    Poured down his cheeks onto the roads.

  14. ثرِّ الشّآبيبِ أَصواتُ الرعودِ بِهِ

    كَأَنَّهُنَّ هَديرُ الجُلَّةِ البُزُلِ

    The roar of thunder in its density

    Is like the rumble of a mighty army.

  15. كَأَنَّما الأَرضُ تَجلو مِن حَدائِقها

    عرائساً في ضُرُوبِ الحَلْي والحللِ

    The earth seems to unveil from its gardens

    Brides in varieties of adornment and garments.

  16. أَحيا الإِلهُ بها التربَ المَواتَ كما

    أحيا سفاقسَ يحيى بالهمام علي

    God gave life thereby to barren lands

    As He gave life to the dead through Jesus son of Mary.

  17. كفؤٌ كَفَى اللَّه في الدهرِ الغشيمِ به

    خَطْباً يخاطبُ منه ألْسُنَ العُضَلِ

    Sufficient is he whom God sufficed in the defiant time with him,

    Addressed the eloquent from him with slackened tongues.

  18. أَقرَّ فيها أُناساً في مَواطِنِهم

    لمّا تَنادَوْا لِتَوْديعٍ ومرتحلِ

    He settled therein people in their dwellings

    When they bid farewell and departed.

  19. وَأَثبَتَ اللَّه أَمْناً في قلوبِهِمُ

    بَعدَ التقلُّبِ في الأحشاءِ من وجلِ

    And God established safety in their hearts

    After anxiety wandering in their bowels.

  20. بِيُمْنِ أكبرَ لا عابٌ يُنَاطُ به

    يُمنَاهُ منشأُ صوبِ العارضِ الهطِلِ

    With the greatest good fortune, no blemish attributed to him,

    Its source of his right side sends down pouring rain.

  21. قومٌ تسوس رعاياه رعايتهُ

    بالرّفْقِ والعدلِ لا بالجوْرِ والعَذَلِ

    A people whose rule treats the citizens gently,

    Not with tyranny and punishment.

  22. من يُتْبِعُ القولَ من إحسانه عملاً

    والقولُ يورقُ والإثمارُ للعمَلِ

    Whoever acts upon his word with good deeds

    While the word blossoms and the fruit is for action.

  23. له رَجاحَةُ حِلْمٍ عند قُدْرَتِهِ

    أرسَى إذا طاشتِ الأحلامُ من جَبَلِ

    He has the steadfastness of wisdom while being able

    To temper the minds that plunge from mountains.

  24. في دولةٍ في مقرِّ العزِّ ثابتةٍ

    تُمْلي العلى من سجاياهُ على الدوَلِ

    In a state firmly established in the seat of might

    It dictates the high moral traits to the epochs.

  25. أغرّ كالبدر يعلو سرجَهُ أسَدٌ

    أظفارُهُ حُمْرُ أطرافِ القَنَا الذبلِ

    Dazzling as the moon rising above its blanket, a lion

    Whose claws are red, the edges withered.

  26. بادي التبسم والهيجاءُ كالحةٌ

    لا يتّقي العضّ من أنيابها العصلِ

    Smiling openly, arousing passion, intense

    Not fearing the bite from its strong white teeth.

  27. تَرى السلاهِبَ من حولَيهِ ساحبةً

    ذيلَ العجاج على الأجسادِ والقلَلِ

    You see the swords around him bared

    The tails of the hawks upon the bodies and skulls.

  28. مِن كلِّ ذي ميعةٍ كالبحرِ تَحسبُ منْ

    أزبادِهِ سُرِدَتْ ماذيَّةُ البطلِ

    You would think every brave man like an ocean

    In its surge rises the essence of the hero.

  29. تَنضو بِهِ مِلَّةُ الإِسلامِ مرهَفَةً

    بِضَربِهِنَّ الطلى تَعلو على المللِ

    The Muslim nation thrives through him

    Rising above religions with his strikes.

  30. قَديمةٌ طَبَعَتْهُنَّ القيونُ على

    ماضي العزائم من آبائه الأولِ

    Antiquity characterized them to

    The resolved decisions of his early forefathers

  31. من كلّ أبيضَ في يمناهُ سَلّتُهُ

    كالبرقِ يخطفُ عُمْرِ القِرْن بالأجلِ

    I questioned each white-faced one in his right side,

    Like lightning snatching the life of one near his end.

  32. جداولٌ تَرِدُ الهيجا فهل وَرَدَتْ

    ماءَ الطلى عن تباريحٍ من الغُلَلِ

    Streams carrying passion - so did they carry

    The water of flowing tears from prisoners?

  33. نَدبٌ تُدَاوي مِنَ الأَقوامِ شيمتُهُ

    بالبأس والجود داءَ الجُبنِ والبَخَلِ

    A people whose reputation he heals with valor and charity

    The disease of cowardice and stinginess.

  34. مستهدَفُ الرَّبع بالقصّادِ تقصدُهُ

    في البحرِ بالفُلكِ أو في البرِّ بالإبلِ

    Seeking his target in the deserts with archers

    In the sea with ships or on land with camels.

  35. مُنَزَّهُ النّفسِ سمحٌ ما لَهُ أمَلٌ

    إلّا مَكارِمُ يَحويها بنو الأملِ

    Of pure soul, clement, having no hope

    Save the noble deeds contained in the sons of hope.

  36. أَطاعَني زَمَني لَمّا اعتَصَمتُ بِهِ

    حَتّى حَسِبتُ زَماني عادَ مِنْ خولي

    My time obeyed me when I held firm to him

    Until I reckoned my time returned from its expiration.

  37. وما تيَقّنتُ أنّي قبل رُؤيَتِهِ

    ألْقَى كرامَ البرايا منه في رجلِ

    I had not realized before seeing him

    I met the noble souls of mankind in a man.

  38. يا صاحبَ الحلمِ والسيفِ الَّذي خمدتْ

    نارُ المنيّة فيه عن ذوي الزللِ

    O you of wisdom and sword who the fire

    Of death for the faltering was extinguished through him.

  39. لو أنّ عزمك حدٌّ في الكَهَام لما

    قدّ الضرائبَ إلّا وهوَ في الخللِ

    If your determination a limit to the stars

    It would not assess taxes except with a shortfall.

  40. كأنّ ذكرَكَ والدنْيا به عَبَقَتْ

    في البأس والجودِ مخلوعٌ عَنِ المثَلِ

    It is as if your mention intoxicated the world

    In valor and charity, peerless and unmatched.

  41. فَاسلَمْ لِمَدحِكَ واقنَ العزَّ ما سَجَعَتْ

    سواجعُ الطير بالأسحارِ والأُصُلِ

    So submit to your praise, gain might so long as

    The birds chant at dawn and in the evenings.
