إذا ما الهَواءُ اعتَلَّ كانَ اعتلالُنا

محيطاً بما يُجريهِ فينا التنفّسُ

If the air becomes corrupted, our corruption

Encompasses what respiration generates in us.

وَرُبَّتما كانَ الغذاءُ مَضَرّةً

يَذُمّ به العقبى جَهُولٌ وَكَيِّسُ

And oftentimes food becomes harmful,

Through which ignorance and intelligence perish.

وأمْراضُنَا أَسبابُهُنَّ كَثيرةٌ

تَحِلُّ بِأَجسامٍ فتهلكُ أنْفُسُ

And our diseases have many causes

That afflict bodies and thus ruin souls.
