1. خلعتُ على بُنيّاتِ الكرومِ

    محاسنَ ما خُلِعْنَ على الرسومِ

    I endowed vines with the beauties

    That were donned upon paintings

  2. أخذتُ بمذهب الحكَميّ فيها

    وكيفَ أميلُ عن غرَض الحكيمِ

    I adopted the scholar's doctrine for them

    How could I deviate from the wise man's purpose?

  3. وما فضلُ الطلول على شَمُولٍ

    تمجّ المسك في نَفَس النسيمِ

    The excellence of grapes over dates

    Is that musk permeates the breeze

  4. يُجدَّدُ حبّها في كلّ قلبٍ

    إذا صقلتْهُ من صدئ الهمومِ

    In every heart, love for it is renewed

    When worries' rust is polished from it

  5. وكنتُ على قديم الدهر أصبو

    إلى اللّذّاتِ بالقصر القديمِ

    And I yearned for pleasures in the old palace

    As in ancient times

  6. تُرَدّ إذا ظمئت عليّ كأسي

    كما رُدّ اللبان على الفطيمِ

    When I'm thirsty, my cup is handed to me

    As amber is returned to the weanling babe

  7. وما استنطقْتُ من طَلَلٍ صَموتٍ

    كأنّ له إشاراتِ الكليمِ

    I did not get speech from silent ruins

    As if it had the gestures of the conversant

  8. بل استنطقْتُ بالنّغماتِ عوداً

    تَنَبّهَ مُطْرِباً في حجر ريمِ

    Rather, I got speech from a lute

    That awoke melodiously in a maiden's lap

  9. وربّ منيمةِ الندماءِ سُكْراً

    نفيتُ بها المنامَ عن النديمِ

    The drowsiness of the sleepy intoxicated me

    I dispelled sleep from the companion with it

  10. فقامَ ومُقْلةُ الإصباحِ فيها

    بقيَّةُ إثمدِ الليلِ البهيمِ

    The morn's eyelid was still

    A remainder of the ignorant night's stupor

  11. كأنّ الصبحَ معترضاً دجاهُ

    خصيمٌ يستطيلُ على خصيمِ

    As if the dawn was an adversary confronting its gloom

    A foe who lengthens against an enemy

  12. كأنّ الشرق في هذا وهذا

    مَصَفٌّ فيه زَنْجيّ ورومي

    As if the east in this and that

    Were ranks in which there was a black man and a Roman

  13. وليلٍ شُقّ فيه ضياءُ صُبْحٍ

    كأدهمَ في إغارتهِ لطيمِ

    A night whose radiance of dawn was split

    Like pitch darkening for a ruthless attack

  14. قطعنا تحت غيهبه عَراءً

    بعاريةِ العظامِ من اللحومِ

    We travelled under its darkness in the wild

    With bare bones devoid of flesh

  15. وداميَةً مناسِمُها رَسَمْنا

    لها قَطْعَ المهامِهِ بالرّسيمِ

    And we mapped its smooth paths

    Drawing them in parts with the feather pen

  16. وَطُفْنا في البلاد طوافَ قَوْمٍ

    يريح نفوسهمْ تَعَبُ الجسومِ

    We circled the lands in a circling of people

    Who rest their bodies from the toil of flesh

  17. وفي مغنى ابنِ عبّادٍ حَلَلْنا

    وقد نِلنا المنى عند العَزيمِ

    And we lodged in Ibn Abbad's melody

    Having attained purpose at determination

  18. بحيثُ يَغضّ أبصاراً ملوكٌ

    تُعظِّمُ هيبةَ الملك العظيمِ

    Whereby the gaze of kings is lowered

    Who revere the majesty of the great king

  19. تُنَظَّمُ في مراتبِهِ المعالي

    فتحسبُها نجوماً للنّجومِ

    Ranks are organized under him

    That you would think them stars to the stars

  20. وتهمي من أنامِلِهِ العَطايا

    فتحسبُها غيوماً للغيومِ

    And favors flow from his fingers

    That you would think them clouds to the clouds

  21. وتصدُرُ عن ندى يده الأماني

    إذا وردتهُ هِيماً غير هيمِ

    And wishes emanate from the dew of his hand

    If they reached him confused, without confusion

  22. إذا نسيَ الكرامُ أنابَ ذكراً

    يسافرُ في فمِ الزّمنِ المقيمِ

    If the generous forget, memory awakens

    Traveling in the mouth of lasting time

  23. تناجيه فراسةُ ناظرَيهِ

    بما في مُضْمَرِ القلبِ الكتومِ

    His insight's intimacy converses with him

    About what is in the heart's concealment

  24. فيا ابنَ الصّيد من لخْمٍ ولخمٌ

    بدورُ مطالع الحسبِ الصميمِ

    So O son of prey, from Lakhm and Lakhm

    With hereditary stellar fortunes' rising places

  25. إذا جادوا فأنواءُ العطايا

    وإن حلموا فأطوادُ الحلومِ

    When they are generous, favors' flashes

    And when forbearing, mellowness' reassurances

  26. وأحرَمَ في يمينك مَشْرَفيّ

    أدَمْتَ ببذلِهِ صَوْنَ الحريمِ

    In your right hand is honored

    Your dispensing it preserves the inviolable

  27. ومُعتَرَكٍ تَلَقّى الفنشُ فيه

    غريماً مهلكاً نَفْسَ الغريمِ

    And a heated battlefield which spears met

    A lethal enemy, the enemy's soul

  28. تَسَتّرَ بالظلامِ وفرّ خوفاً

    برَوْعٍ شَقّ سامعتي ظليمِ

    It lurked in darkness and fled in fright

    With a quaking that split my hearing, wronged

  29. وذاقَ بيوسفٍ ذي البأس بُؤساً

    فمرّرَ عنده حلوَ النّعيمِ

    And it tasted through Joseph militancy's woes

    So he made the blissful anguish pass him

  30. وقد نهشتْهُ حيّاتُ العوالي

    سلوا الليلَ السليمَ عن السليمِ

    Serpents of eminence had torn at him

    Ask the safe night about the safe

  31. ثنى توحيدُكَ التثليثَ منه

    يَعَضّ على يَدَيْ فَزِعٍ كظيمِ

    Your oneness of God folds its Trinity

    To bite the hands of great terror

  32. رآك وأنتَ مبتسمٌ كضارٍ

    تثاءَبَ عن نواجذه شتيمِ

    It saw you smiling like a false friend

    It yawned away from it with curses

  33. غداة أتى بصلبانٍ أضَلّتْ

    علوجاً أبْرَموا كَيْدَ البريمِ

    The next day it came with crucifixes that misled

    Obstinate foes concocted a cunning scheme

  34. كأنّهمُ شياطينٌ ولكنْ

    رميتَهُمُ بمحرقةِ النجومِ

    As if they were devils, but

    You hurled them into the inferno of stars

  35. علوجٌ قُمْصُ حَرْبهمُ حَدِيدٌ

    يُعبِّرُ عنهمُ سَهَكُ النَّسيمِ

    Obstinacy, its war shirt is iron

    The passing breeze conveys it

  36. يَقودهمُ لحينهِمُ ظَلومٌ

    لأنفسهمْ فوَيلٌ للظلومِ

    Misguided ones lead them in their time

    So woe to the misguided!

  37. رعى نَبْتَ الوشيج بهمْ فمادوا

    وتلك عواقبُ المرعى الوخيمِ

    It cultivated the growth of thorns through them, so they flourished

    Those are the consequences of fateful pasture

  38. وأوردهمْ حياضاً في المواضي

    بماءِ الموتِ ساقٍ من جمومِ

    And it led them to meadows in the meadows

    With the lethal water of dense clouds

  39. ولما أنْ أتاكَ بقومِ عادٍ

    أتَيْتَ بصرصرِ الريح العقيمِ

    And when Ad people came to you

    You came with the barren wind'sPredicate

  40. وقد ضرَّمتَ نارَ الحرب حتى

    حَكَتْ زفراتُها قِطَعْ الجحيمِ

    You provoked war's fire until

    Its gasps etched Hell's pieces

  41. وثارَ بركضِ شُزَّبِها قَتامٌ

    خَلَعْنَ به الصريمَ على الصريمِ

    With the floundering of its flames, darkness rose

    Shedding the honorable's gown over the honorable

  42. فثوبُ الجوّ مُغْبَرُّ الحواشي

    ووجهُ الأرض مُحمرُّ الأديمِ

    So the sky's robe is dusty at the fringes

    And the earth's face is red-dyed cloth

  43. وقد سَكِرَتْ صِعادُ الخطّ حتى

    تأوّدَ كلّ لدنٍ مستقيمِ

    The heated spear points were intoxicated until

    Every straight, supple palm tree swayed

  44. وما شَرِبت سوى خمرِ التراقي

    ولا انتشقتْ سِوَى وَرْدِ الكلومِ

    I have drunk only the wine of aspiration

    And radiated only the roses' nectar

  45. فصلّ لربّك المعبودِ وانحرْ

    قُرُوماً منهمُ بَعْدَ القرومِ

    So pray to your worshipped Lord and sacrifice

    Flocks from them after the flocks

  46. وَعَيِّدْ بالهدى وأعِدْ عليهمْ

    عذابَ الحرب بالألمِ الأليمِ

    Celebrate with guidance and prepare upon them

    The torment of war with painful agony

  47. أمُدامٌ عن حَبابٍ تبتسمْ

    أمْ عقيقٌ فوقه دُرٌّ نُظِمْ

    Are those smiles of dawn from Habbab

    Or carnelian atop which a pearl is strung?

  48. أعَلى الهمّ بعثنا كأسنا

    أم بنجمِ الأفْقِ شيطانٌ رُجم

    Is it obscurity to radiance adjoining

    Or camphor sealed with musk?

  49. أظلامٌ لضياءٍ طَبَقٌ

    أم على الكافور بالمسكِ خُتِم

    Dew in the flowers or the water of love

    Boiling in eyes of houris who did not sleep?

  50. أندىً في الزهرٍ أم ماءُ الهوى

    حارَ في أعينِ حُورٍ لم تنم

    The pillar of dawn in darkness, or

    The first glow in the dusty cloud?

  51. أعمودُ الصبح في الغيهبِ أم

    غُرّةُ الأشقرِ في الغيمِ الأحَمْ

    A woman or an everlasting pond

    Whose skin is bristled with hailstones?

  52. أمِراةٌ أم غديرٌ دائمٌ

    مقشعرّ الجلدِ بالقَرّ شَبِمْ

    The morning breeze dictated it in order, but did not

    Lift its hand from it until it was detached

  53. قَدَرَتْ منه الصّبا سرداً فما

    رَفَعَتْ عنه يداً حتى انفصمْ

    It settled the hearts of ruins

    Fate wove over it and patched

  54. كلّ ذا يدعو إلى مشمولةٍ

    فذرِ اللوم عليها أو فَلُمْ

    Its deeds opposed its lifespans

    So its strength came after old age

  55. واغتنمْ من كلّ عيشٍ صَفْوَهُ

    فألَذّ العيش صفوٌ يُغْتَنَمْ

    So if you quench it in the winery, it is

    Flowing fire, kindled water

  56. واشكلِ الأوتار عن نغمتها

    لا تسوغُ الخمرُ إلا بالنّغم

    Eons exhausted an essence from it

    Save the indivisible portion

  57. ومدامٍ قَدُمَتْ فهيَ إذا

    سُئِلتْ تخبرُ عنْ عادِ إِرم

    It is of what exceeded in delicacy

    You find ether in it though it is non-existence

  58. سكنتْ أجوفَ في جوْف الثرى

    نَسَجَ الدّهْرُ عليه وَرَقَم

    Drinking from its cups attains

    Only a color that hastens drunkenness and smearing

  59. خالفَتْ أفعالُها أعمارَها

    فأتَتْ قُوّتُها بَعْدَ الهرم

    As if the sun in its vessel

    Is blackened pitch in a garment of darkness

  60. فهي في الرّاووقِ إن رَوّقْتَها

    لهبٌ جارٍ وماءٌ مُضطرم

    So turn to the soul a sister, and grapes

    A daughter, and the spirit's bliss a mother

  61. أفْنَتِ الأحقابُ منها جوهراً

    ما خلا الجزءَ الذي لا ينقسم

    It is a key to the selves for us

    And the Victorious' hand is the key to generosity

  62. فهي مما أفرطتْ رقّتُها

    تجدُ الريّ بها وهيَ عَدَم

    A king unlocked the castle of glory through it

    Glory began with him, then was sealed

  63. لا ينالُ الشَّرْبُ من كاساتها

    غيرَ لونٍ يُسْرِع السّكرَ وشم

    In his grasp crouches a lion

    And crescent, cloud, and banner

  64. وكأنّ الشمس في ناجودِها

    من سوادِ القارِ في قمصِ ظلم

    He leaves vengeance aside

    And when punishing, punishes for God's sake

  65. فأدِرْ للروح أُخْتاً والزرا

    جينِ بنتاً وسرورِ النفس أُم

    And if he says "yes"—that being his habit—

    He bestows bountifully with bestowal of bounty

  66. فهي مفتاحٌ للذّاتٍ لنا

    ويدُ المنصور مفتاحُ الكرم

    Of hands that were connected through hands

    Like succeeding rains after rain

  67. حلّ قصرَ المجد منه مَلِكٌ

    بُدئَ المجدُ به ثمّ خُتِم

    And if the cloud is miserly with downpour

    And if fate scowls with cheerlessness

  68. يحتبي في الدستِ منه أَسدٌ

    وهلالٌ وسحابٌ وَعَلَم

    The elite are chosen as honored, but when

    They approach him, they become servants

  69. يتركُ النقمةَ في جانبهِ

    وإذا عاقبَ في اللّه انتقم

    I know not which right hand was kissed

    In its surrender, or the receiver

  70. وإذا قال نعم وهي له

    عادةٌ أسبغَ بالبذل النِّعَم

    The tyrant panics of him, so on

    A lip he walks to him, without foot

  71. ذو أيادٍ بأيادٍ وُصِلَتْ

    كتوالي دِيَمٍ بَعْدَ ديم

    The solver of concerns when war stirred

    The sparks of war when it intended resolve

  72. وإذا ما بَخِلَ الغيمُ سخا

    وإذا ما عَبَسَ الدهرُ بَسَم

    Whenever he pressed a difficult war

    Zeal blazed and the assailant ignited

  73. تنتخي السادات عزّاً فإذا

    قَرُبَتْ من عنده صارتْ خدمْ

    And if he attempted to stab the kidneys

    God deflected the piercer like the pen

  74. لست أدري أيمينٌ قُبّلَتْ

    منه في تسليمها أمْ مُستَلم

    He tramples the resolves that he undid

    With an inspiration for enemies voracious

  75. يذعرُ الجبّارُ منه فعلى

    شَفَةٍ يمشي إليه لا قدم

    He turns night to day with prey

    And restores noon with spears lodged

  76. فالقُ الهامِ إذا كرّ سطا

    مِسْعَرُ الحربِ إذا همّ اعتَزَم

    The radiance of falling stars in his bow

    And he makes noon a loan in sheaths

  77. كلَّما أوطأ حرْباً سنبكاً

    حمِيَ الرّوْعُ وَشَبّ المقتحم

    Only the roaring of a lion whose

    Dens within are still serene

  78. وإذا حاولَ في طعنِ الكُلى

    صَرّفَ اللهذَمَ تصريفَ القلم

    Every brave heart, awe-inspiring

    Choice of morals, praiseworthy traits

  79. يطأ الهامَ التي فَلّقَهَا

    بلهامٍ للأعادي مُلتهِم

    They take shade in the leaves of prey

    While the awe's flames within them ignite

  80. يُرْجِعُ الليلَ نهاراً بالظّبا

    ويعيدُ الظُّهرَ بالنقع عَتَمْ

    And a bride I gifted you

    At which enviers are silenced by the word

  81. فضياءُ الشهب في قَسْطَلِهِ

    ويعيدُ الظهر ديال في نيم

    In its small pearls, if they try

    To gather them, they are wise sayings

  82. إنّما حِمْيَرُ أُسْدٌ لم تَزَلْ

    من قناها ساكناتٍ في أجَم

    Nations strike parables with you forever

    After nations, in praise

  83. كلّ شهمِ القلبِ مرهوبِ الشبا

    مُرْتضى الأخلاقِ محمودِ الشيم

    I settled your mention as eternal wisdom

    Its structure forever undestructive

  84. يستظلّون بأوراق الظّبا

    وأُوَارُ الرّوْعِ فيهم مُحْتَدم

  85. وعروسٍ لك قد أهدَيْتُها

    تُكْلَمُ الحُسّادُ منها بالكَلِم

  86. في تقاصيرَ من الدّرّ إذا

    حاولوا تحصيلهَا فهيَ حِكَم

  87. يضربُ الأمثالَ فيها بِكُمُ

    أُمَمٌ في المدح منْ بعد أُمم

  88. أسكنت ذكرَك حُكْماً خالداً

    أبداً بُنْيانُهُ لا ينْهَدِم
