الصبح شرّ بغيضِ

والليلُ خير حبيبِ

Morning is an odious nuisance

While night is a beloved companion

فما أُحَدّثُ إلّا

عن ممرضي وطبيبي

So I speak of nothing

Except my nurse and my doctor

فالصبح أبْعَدَ مني

قُرْبَ الغزال الربيب

For morning has driven from me

The proximity of the beloved gazelle

فلو قضيتَ لقلبي

لما شكا من وجيب

If only you would grant my heart its wish

It would not complain of affliction

أمتَّ عينَ صباحي

يوماً وعينَ رقيبي

My morning eyes have completed

A day, and so have the eyes of my watcher
