1. أبى اللَّه إلّا أَن يَكونَ لك النّصْرُ

    وأن يَهْدِمَ الإيمانُ ما شاده الكفرُ

    God willed that victory be yours,

    That faith destroy what disbelief built,

  2. وأَن يُرجعَ الأَعلاجَ بَعدَ عِلاجها

    خَزايا على آثارِها الذُّلُّ والقهرُ

    That medicines, after curing,

    Return shame upon its tracks, disgrace and subjugation,

  3. لِيَهنَكَ فتحٌ أولغ السيف فيهمُ

    ولاح بِوَجه الدين من ذِكره بِشرُ

    So that an opening whose sword slew them triumphs,

    And the light of religion whose mention brings good news shines.

  4. بِسَعْدٍ كساكَ اللّهُ منه مهابةً

    وإشراقَ نور منه تَقْتَبِسُ الزُّهرُ

    With Sa'd whom God endowed with awe,

    And the radiance of whose light, flowers ignite,

  5. ودون مَرَامِ الرّوم فيما سَمَوا له

    قلائدُ أعناقٍ هي القُضُبُ البترُ

    Below the Romans’ ambitions however high they climbed,

    Are necklaces of necks, snapped twigs,

  6. وخطِّيَّة تختَطُّ مِنهُم حيازِماً

    وأحداقها زرقٌ وأجسادها حُمرُ

    And stallions that race them

    Whose eyes are blue and bodies red.

  7. إذا أُشْرِعَتْ للطّعْنِ سَرتْ كأنَّما

    يُشَكُّ بها في كلّ سابقةٍ نَحْرُ

    When loosed to stab they race as though

    Their stabbing each neck were in doubt for every winner.

  8. أُشَبِّهُها بالقَطرِ يُبْدي تَألُّقاً

    بِأَطرافِ أَغصانٍ يُحاصِرها غُدْرُ

    I liken them to drops that shimmer

    On branch ends that treachery besieges.

  9. وَسُحْبٌ بأجوافِ الكنائن أُودعت

    شآبيبها نبلٌ من الزنج لا قطرُ

    In animal interiors were lodged

    Their downpours, Zanj arrows, not raindrops,

  10. وخيلٌ ترى خيلَ العلوجِ مُضافةٌ

    إِلَيها حميراً لا الَّتي نتج القَفْرُ

    And steeds you see eclipse their steeds

    As though the desert’s born were donkeys, not horses.

  11. كَأنَّ على العقبانِ مِنها ضَراغماً

    فأنيابها عُصْلٌ وأبصارها جَمرُ

    As though hawks wore shields on them

    So their claws are iron and their visions embers

  12. وحمرُ دماءٍ كَالخُمورِ الَّتي سقوا

    تَحَمّرَ منها في الظبا وَرَقٌ خُضرُ

    And red bloods like wines they drank

    Till leaves once green in the meadow turned red.

  13. بَنو الأَصفَرِ اصْفَرَّتْ حَذاراً وُجوههم

    فَأَيديهِمُ مِن كُلِّ ما طَلَبوا صِفْرُ

    The yellow sons of Byzantines yellowed in fear

    So hands that sought anything gained only yellow.

  14. تَنادَوا كَأَسرابِ القَطا في بِلادِهمْ

    وكان لهم في كل قاصيةٍ نَفْرُ

    They gathered like flocks of wild cats in their lands

    And rallied each far reach into bands.

  15. ولمّا تناهى جمعُهُمْ ركبوا به

    قَرَا زاخِرِ الآذيِّ آفاقُهُ غُبرُ

    When their masses rode the throng

    Whose horizons seethed with harm,

  16. تَوَلَّتْ جنودُ اللَّهِ بِالرّيحِ حَرْبَهُمْ

    وَلَيسَ لِمَخلوقٍ عَلى حَربِها صَبرُ

    God’s armies turned them in the winds.

    No creature can withstand its war.

  17. فَكَم مِن فَريقٍ مِنهُمُ إذ تَفرَّقوا

    له غَرَقٌ في زخرةِ الموج أو أسرُ

    How many ranks of them as they fled

    Were drowned in the abundance of waves or captive!

  18. وظَلَّت سِباعُ الماءِ وهيَ تنوشُهُمْ

    فلا شلو منهم في صريحٍ ولا قبرُ

    The beasts of the sea drank them in

    With no part in a shroud or a grave.

  19. فإن سَلِمَ الشطرُ الَّذي لا سلامةٌ

    له من ظُبا الهيجا فقد عطِبَ الشطرُ

    If a portion escaped, safe passage denied them

    By savage, raging seas, that portion was ruined.

  20. أَتَوا بِأَساطيلٍ تَمُرُّ كَأَنَّها

    جَرادٌ مُظِلٌّ ضاق عن عرضه البَحرُ

    How many fleets they brought like locusts

    Darkening, too narrow for their breadth the sea

  21. وخيلٍ حَشَوْا منها السفينَ ولم يكنْ

    لها في مجالِ الحرب كرٌّ ولا فَرُّ

    And cavalry cramming ships though consigned

    To battle without advantage or retreat.

  22. وَقَد رَكِبتْ فرسانها صَهَوَاتها

    فأرْجَلَهُمْ عنها التذلّلُ والذعرُ

    Their horsemen rode their mares

    But abjection and panic cast them off.

  23. سلاهبُ أهدَوْها إليك ولم يكنْ

    جزاءٌ لذاكَ من علاك ولا شكرُ

    Loot they gifted you though no reward

    Could repay or thank he who exalted and aided you.

  24. فَسلْ عنهمُ الديماسَ تسمعْ حديثَهمْ

    فَهُم بالمواضي في جزيرَتِهِ جَزْرُ

    Ask Dimashq about them. You’ll hear how

    On an isle they were cut down in droves.

  25. وما غنِموا إلّا مُنىً كَذبتْ لهم

    وكان لهم بالقَصْرِ عن نَيلها قصرُ

    They won only illusory booty which lied to them

    And failing to gain it, failed in their castle.

  26. شَرَوْهُ فباعوا بالرّدى فيه أنفساً

    أرِبحٌ لهم في ذلك البيع أم خُسْرُ

    They sold themselves cheap in a losing deal.

    Did they profit? Did they lose?

  27. وقَد طَمِعوا في الزَّعمِ أن يُثبتوا له

    جناحَين يُضْحي مِنهُما وهوَ النّسْرُ

    Greedy, they hoped to furnish wings for it

    To soar as an eagle over them.

  28. ورامُوا بِهِ صَيْدَ البلادِ وغنمها

    فَأَضحى وَقَد قُصَّت خوافِقهُ العشرُ

    They plotted with it to hunt the lands and loot them

    But rose, its ten feathers clipped,

  29. أُذيقوا به حصراً أذلّ عرامهم

    كما ضاق عِندَ المَوتِ عن نَفَسٍ صدرُ

    They sampled with it straits too cramped

    As spirits cramp at death in chests.

  30. وَجَرَّ إِلَيهم في جِبالٍ مِنَ القَنا

    مَناياهُمُ بِالقتلِ جَحفَلُكَ المَجْرُ

    How they strove to ransom their lives

    With their weights in dust but no dust was accepted.

  31. وَقائِدُكَ الشَّهمُ الَّذي كان بينَهمْ

    صَبيحَةَ لاقاهُم على يده النصرُ

    There Islam healed its rage with them

    With a piercing, rending blow.

  32. رأوا بأبي إسحقَ سَحْقاً لجمعهم

    فإبْرَامُهُمْ نَقْضٌ ونظمهم نَثرُ

    They saw your gifts and in them

    For the enemy’s glory, matters that perturbed them,

  33. ولو لبثوا في ضيقِ حصرهمُ ولمْ

    يَطِرْ مِنهُمُ شَوقاً إلى أَجلٍ عُمْرُ

    As if the celestial towers pelted them

    With meteors of flame and no ember.

  34. لَقامَ عَلَيهِم مِنجَنيقٌ يُظِلّهُمْ

    بِصمّ مرادٍ ما لِما كَسَرَتْ جَبرُ

    How far did their ignorance in delusion stretch

    Had they no wise man, no reason?

  35. إذا وُزِنَ الموتُ الزّؤامُ عليهمُ

    بكفّة وَزّانٍ مَثاقيلُهُ الصخرُ

    How they divided in guesswork miles of our land

    When they encountered no scent of a bird

  36. فَكَم جَهدُوا أَن يَفتَدوا مِن حِمامِهم

    بِأَوزانِهم تِبراً فما قُبِلَ التبرُ

    To wet their thirst if mirages withered!

    Did not our lands conquer theirs, theirs in name only,

  37. هناك شَفى الإسلامُ منهم غليلَهُ

    بِطَعنٍ له بَتْرٌ وضَربٍ له هَبْرُ

    Successive disbelief begetting disbelief?

    Were not the keys to the lands our swords

  38. وكانوا رأوا مَهْدِيَّتَيْكَ وفيهما

    لِعِزِّ العدى أمْرٌ فهالَهُمُ الأمرُ

    When hardship unlocked them?

    Did not the harm of Rīya’s conquest reach

  39. كَأَنّ بُرُوجَ الجوِّ مِنكَ رَمَتهُمُ

    بشُهْبٍ لها نارٌ ولَيسَ لَها جَمرُ

    And shake its power from Sicily’s end?

    Did not their invading army capture their delicate women

  40. فَما للعلوجِ امتَدَّ في الغيِّ جَهلُهم

    أما كانَ فيهم منْ لبيبٍ له حِجْرُ

    So after each aged crone a virgin followed?

    Coffers in which were the heads of their ancestors

  41. فَكَم قَسَموا في الظنِّ أَميالَ أَرضِنا

    أما كانَ فيهم منْ لبيبٍ له حِجْرُ

    Still filled with their molars today?

    If you asked the passing wind about them all

  42. ولا وَرَدوا من مائها حَسْوَ طائرٍ

    يُبَلّ بهِ منهُ إِذا يَبِس السَّحْرُ

    It would tell of every hero slain among them.

    Not by fierce combat were the people killed

  43. أما فتحتْ منهم بلاداً بلادُنا

    بِزَعمهِمُ كُفراً على إِثرِهِ كُفرُ

    But few they were, encircled by hordes.

    Will a foreigner dilute the Arabs’ spring?

  44. وكانَت مفاتيحَ البلادِ سُيوفُنا

    وأَقفْالها إذ فتحهُنَّ له عُسْرُ

    When she surges in rage, no dilution in her strike!

    Every shout came over them

  45. وآذى زجارَ فَتْح رَيّو وقُطْرُها

    يَهُدّ قُوَاهُ من صقليّةٍ قطرُ

    As a lion’s roar startles gazelles.

    Then winds came, the winds their steeds,

  46. ألم يسبِ جيشُ الغزو منهم نواعِماً

    فَمن ثيِّبٍ تُقْتادُ في إثرها بِكرُ

    The cords of the true religion braced.

    First they relinquished injustice—every insolent

  47. وَقَوْصَرّةٍ فيها رؤوسُ جدودهم

    إلى اليوم ملآن بأفلاقِها العفرُ

    Brigand’s torment in his nature.

    The bold among them rushed to confront

  48. فلو تسألُ الريحُ المعاطسَ منهمُ

    لأخبرها عَن كُلِّ شلوٍ بها دِفرُ

    So many a report verifies reports.

    The tribes of Duhman poured into war’s tumult

  49. وَما قَتلوا مِن شِدَّةِ البأسِ أَهلها

    ولكنّهم قُلٌّ أحاطَ بهم كثرُ

    With every hero sweetening it with his courage.

    Faces rose with glory against misguidance

  50. أَتُعجِمُ نبعَ العربِ عجمٌ ولا يُرَى

    لما اشتدّ منها في نَواجِذِها كَسرُ

    Battlements when Bater opposed it.

    The sons of Zayd attacked all who snarled

  51. توالتْ عليها منهمُ كلُّ صيحةٍ

    كما رَوَّع الأعيارَ من أسَدٍ زأرُ

    And the meadows’ secrets were loud in their palms.

    Ibn Ziyad came with boulders but the fortress resisted

  52. فجاءَت رياحٌ والرِّياحُ جيادُها

    فَشُدّ منَ الدينِ القويمِ بِها أزرُ

    With fangs that foiled each breach.

    A massive sea surging with war

  53. فَأَوَّلُ إِنصافٍ تَولوه كفُّهُمْ

    أذى كلّ فظٍّ في سَجِيَّتِه غدرُ

    His body refused it; his hand held back rivers.

    Between the Romans and the sea he stood so they slipped

  54. وبادرتِ الإقدام منهم بمقدم

    فكم خَبَرٍ عنها يصدِّقه الخبرُ

    Back to their hold until the hold brought ruin.

    Nomads persisted in waging holy war on foreigners

  55. وَدُهم بني دهمانَ فاض على الوغى

    بِكُلِّ فتىً أحلى بسالتِهِ مُرُّ

    Pigs roused to war by lions enraged.

    When told, “O people of strongholds,” they answered readily

  56. وشاهَت مِنَ الضُّلّالِ بالعزِّ أَوجُهٌ

    عليها بُسُورٌ إِذ تَصَدَّى لَها بترُ

    With assistants among whom eyes were blue.

    Squadrons of all the tribes came

  57. وكرَّت بنو زيدٍ على كلِّ شَيظَمٍ

    وَسِرّ المواضي في أكفِّهمُ جهرُ

    To fulfill a duty neglecting which no excuse.

    God Almighty ennobled through them the religion of Muhammad

  58. وجاء ابنُ زيّادٍ بصخر فكافحت

    عَنِ الثغر أنيْابٌ فلم يُلْثَم الثغرُ

    And guaranteed its defense.

    Every sword that rivaled them

  59. هِزَبرٌ على بحرٍ منَ الحربِ مُفْعَمٍ

    على جِسمه نَهيٌ وفي يده نهرُ

    Were tribes satisfying highland and lowland.

    If a tumultuous sea surged among their milky pools

  60. وَقَد حالَ بَينَ الرّومِ والبحرِ فالتَجوْا

    إلى القصرِ حتّى جاءَهُم بالرّدى القصرُ

    Aid came from us and the land seethed like the sea.

    The son of ʿAlī protected the religion’s precinct

  61. أَعارِبُ جدّوا في جهِادِ أعاجِمٍ

    خنازير شَبّتْ حَرْبَها أُسُدٌ هُصرُ

    Like a predator with bloodied claws.

    A sovereign whose sovereignty is greater nature

  62. إِذا قيلَ يا أهلَ الحفائظِ أقْبَلَتْ

    مُلَبّيَةً فيها غطارِفةٌ غُرُّ

    God refused a mingling of grandeur.

    A father like the sword’s edge, no false sharpness,

  63. عَلَيهم مِنَ الماذِيِّ كلُّ مُفاضَةٍ

    مُكَحّلَةٍ بالنّقع أعيْنُهُا الخزرُ

    When the ignited blade’s gleam wanes.

    He both lunges with spear and sword. His palm

  64. كتائِبُ من كلّ القبائلِ أقبَلَتْ

    لِفَرْضِ جهادٍ ما لِتارِكِهِ عذرُ

    Wields members that gather eternal fame.

    No more than a splendid, crowned sovereign

  65. أعزّ بهم ذو العرشِ دينَ مُحَمَّدٍ

    وَضُمّ عليه من كفالَتِه حجرُ

    Whose open hands pour bounty so no poverty.

    As though a loving cup pouring its excess

  66. وفي كلِّ سَيفٍ سايرت منهمُ العِدى

    قبائلُ منها أُشْبِعَ السهلَ والوعرُ

    While the moon hides from its pouring.

    Whenever his name graces a gathering

  67. إذا ماج بحرٌ في شوانيهمُ بهم

    أتى مَدَدٌ منّا فماجَ به البَرُّ

    Glory clings like a train to its fringes.

    So he remains as God’s oneness his haven

  68. حَمى ابنُ عليٍّ حَوْزَةَ الدين فاحتمى

    كمُفْترِسِ الكفّينِ يَدْمى له ظفرُ

    The world weighed by him as time serves him.

  69. مليكٌ له في الملك سيرةُ أكبرٍ

    أبى اللَّه أنْ يَختالَ في عِطفِهِ الكبرُ

  70. أبيٌّ كحَدِّ السيفِ من غيرِ نَبْوَةٍ

    إذا ما مضَاءُ الذمر قلَّ بِهِ الذَّمرُ

  71. هُوَ النّجْدُ يقري الرمحَ والسيفَ كَفُّهُ

    بِعُضوَين يُلْفَى فيهما العمرُ والذكرُ

  72. وما حسَنٌ إلّا مليكٌ مُتَوَّجٌ

    أفاضَ الغنى من راحتيه فلا فقرُ

  73. كَأَنَّ حَبِيّاً ساكباً فيضَ ودقهِ

    وقَد يَحْتبي منه لقُصّادِهِ البدرُ

  74. إذا ما جَرَى في محفلٍ حُسْنُ ذكره

    تَعَلّقَ تشريفاً بأذْيالِهِ الفخرُ

  75. فلا زال والتوحيدُ مُعْتَصِمٌ به

    تُزَانُ به الدنْيا ويخدمه الدهرُ
