ولَمّا رَأَتْ طَيْرَ الفِراقِ نَوَاعِباً

وَقَد هَمَّ بِالتوديعِ كُلُّ مودَّعِ

When she saw the bird of separation being intimate,

And every friend was intent on bidding farewell,

شكتْ ما شَكا المحزونُ من عَزْمَةِ النَّوى

فأبكتْ لها عينيْ غَزَالٍ مُرَوَّعِ

She complained of what the sorrowful complain of firm resolve,

So my eyes wept for her, frightened gazelle.

ولم أرَ في خدٍّ يُزَرَّرُ قبلها

من الغيد شهباً في غمامة برقُعِ

And I had not seen before her on any cheek

Sparks in a cloudburst from intense passion.

وقَد سَفِرت عَن صفرةٍ عَبْرَ الأسى

لعيني بها عن وَجْد قلبٍ مفجَعِ

She turned away from me yellow with sorrow,

My eyes overflowing for her with agonized grief.

وأَقبَلَ دُرّ النَّحرِ فَوقَ تَريبِها

يصافِحُه من خدّها دُرّ أدْمُعِ

And the pearls of her tears flowed over her breast,

Kissing her cheek with the pearls of her weeping.

فيا ربِّ إنّ البينَ أضحت صُرُوفُهُ

عليّ وما لي من معينٍ فكنْ معي

So my Lord, separation has certainly turned

Its back on me, and I have no helper, so be with me,

على قُرْبِ عُذّالي وبُعْدِ حبائبي

وأمْوَاهِ أجفاني ونيرانِ أضلُعي

Despite my drawing near to reproachers and the distance of loved ones,

And the sleeplessness of my eyelids and the fires in my ribs.
