1. وكنتُ إذا مرضتُ رجوتُ عيشاً

    لياليَ كنتُ في شرخ الشبابِ

    Once when ill, I hoped for added days

    Those nights when I was in youth’s prime

  2. فصرتُ إذا مرضت خشيت موتاً

    وقلتُ قد انقضى عَدَدُ الحسابِ

    Now when ill, I fear my death is near

    I say my count of days is past its time

  3. فنفسُ الشيخ تضعف كلّ حينٍ

    وقوّتُهُ على طَرَفِ الذّهابِ

    An old man’s soul grows weak apace

    His strength is on its final climb

  4. ولستُ مُصَدّقاً خُدَعَ الأماني

    وهل تُوكى المَزَادُ على السّرابِ

    No more believing empty dreams

    Can mirage become a rope to climb?
