1. هُبّوا فقد رَحّلَ الدّجى ظُلَمَهْ

    وأقبلَ الصّبحُ رافعاً عَلَمَهْ

    Rise, for the night has packed its darkness

    And dawn has come raising its banner

  2. كزَاحفٍ أقبلتْ كتائبُهُ

    هازِمةً في اتباع مُنْهزِمه

    Like crawling troops its battalions advanced

    Defeating those who retreat in pursuit

  3. كأنّ في كفّه حسامَ سناً

    ما مسّ من حندس به حَسَمَه

    As though in its grasp was an unsheathed sword

    That destroyed every encroaching enemy

  4. كأنّ ليثَ النجوم ريعَ بهِ

    فهو من الغرب داخلٌ أجمه

    As though it was the lion of stars that roared

    Entering from the west, resolute and staunch

  5. ونفحةُ الزّهر شمُّها عَبِقٌ

    وريقةُ الماء بالصَّبا شَبِمَه

    The fragrance of flowers, inhaling it is bliss

    And the leaf of water kissing the morning breeze

  6. ومَعْبَدُ الطير وهو بلبُلها

    مُرَجِّعٌ في غصينه نَغَمَه

    The sanctuary of birds and their warbling

    Returning melody to every bough and limb

  7. كأنّما الليلُ أدهمٌ رَفَعَتْ

    عن غُرّةِ الصّبْح راحةٌ غُمَمَه

    As though the night was pitch-dark but lifted

    Off the radiant dawn its gloomy veil

  8. كأنّما الشمسُ جمرةٌ جَعَلَتْ

    تحرقُ من كلّ ظلمة حممَه

    As though the sun was a burning ember

    Incinerating the remnants of darkness’ gloom

  9. خُذوا من الكَرْمِ شَرْبةً وَصَفَتْ

    للشَّربِ ريّا نَسِيمُها كَتَمَه

    Take from generosity a draught that dressed

    The drink, its breeze concealing all its foam

  10. كأنّما الدّهرُ في تصرفهِ

    أودَعَ في الطولِ عمرها قِدَمَه

    As though time in its events deposited

    In days long passed, the steps of its roam

  11. تريكَ ياقوتةً مُنَعَّمَةً

    عن لؤلؤٍ في الزّجاجِ مُبْتسِمه

    You see it a polished ruby that smiled

    Brighter than a pearl in translucent glass

  12. كأنّما للمُنى بها شَفَةٌ

    فَهْيَ بكلّ الشفاهِ مُلْتَثَمه

    As though for wishes it has lips that pressed

    Against all other lips in a passionate clasp

  13. فالعيشُ في شربها مُعَتَّقةٌ

    بسكرها في العقول محتكمه

    So living in its intoxicating sips

    Is pleasure captive in hearts and minds grasped

  14. على غناءٍ بعودِ غانيَةٍ

    يُجْري عليها بنانُها عَنَمه

    To the music of a singing lute that dripped

    Melody as fingertips plucked vibrating strings

  15. لسانُ مضرابِها ترَى يَدَها

    له فماً ليتني لثمتُ فَمَه

    Its plectrum’s tongue you see its hand eclipse

    Would that I could kiss that mouth which sings

  16. وشادِنٍ في جفونه سَقَمٌ

    كأنّني عنه حاملٌ ألمَه

    And a sick heart behind half-closed eyelids

    As though I bore for it all of suffering’s stings

  17. ودّعنا في سلامِهِ عَجِلاً

    ففرّقَ الشملَ عندما نَظَمه

    Bid us farewell in peace, departed swift

    Splitting company just when conjoined it seems

  18. كانت وقوفاً بنا زيارتُهُ

    كوَاضِعٍ فوق جمرَةٍ قَدمَه

    His visit was a standing with us, but left

    Like one who stepped onto hot coals, it sears

  19. كأنّ ليلَ الوصالِ من قِصَرٍ

    في فَلَقِ الصبحِ أدْغمَ العَتَمَهْ

    As though the night of union was a palace

    Dawn demolished when it broke, nothing repairs
