1. مَن كانَ يعذُبُ عندها تعذيبي

    أَنّى تَرقّ لِعبرتي ونَحيبي

    Whoever has tormented me with their torment

    How can tears and wailing move them?

  2. مِن أَين يَعلَمُ من ينام مسلَّماً

    حُمَةً تؤرِّق مُقلةَ الملسوبِ

    How can one who sleeps peacefully know

    The anxiety that disturbs the eyelids of the sleepless?

  3. أَتَدبُّ في جَفنَيه طائِفة الكرى

    وعقاربُ الأصداغ ذاتُ دبيبِ

    Troubles circle in his eyelids

    And the ticks of migraines bite

  4. وتَنامُ في وَردِ الخُدودِ ولَدغها

    متسرّب من أعينٍ لِقُلوبِ

    They sleep in the roses of cheeks

    Seeping from weeping eyes to hearts

  5. وكأنّما سَمٌّ مُذيبٌ مسكُها

    أَيُذيبُني والمِسكُ غَير مُذيبِ

    It is as if her musk is a melting poison

    Does it melt me when musk does not melt?

  6. كيفَ السّبيلُ إِلى لِقاءِ غَريرة

    تَلقى ابتِسامَ الشّيبِ بالتَقطيبِ

    How can I reach the laughing pearl

    Who meets the smile of old age with a frown?

  7. مِن أَينَ أرجو أَن أَفوزَ بِسَلمِها

    والحَربُ بين شَبابِها وَمَشيبي

    From where can I hope to gain her peace

    When war rages between her youth and my old age?

  8. ما حبّ شَمس عَنكَ تَغرِبُ في الفَلا

    مِن أَنجُمٍ طلعَت بِغَيرِ غروبِ

    No sun you love sets in the horizon

    Of stars that rose without setting

  9. قالَت لمنشدها نسيبي ما لهُ

    ليس النّسيب لمثله بنسيبِ

    Her cousin said to the suitor, what is with him?

    A cousin is not fit for his like

  10. فإلام ينشدني تغزّلَ شاعرٍ

    ما كان أولاه بوعظِ خطيبِ

    Why does he recite love poetry to me

    His first was not admonition from a preacher?

  11. يا هذه أصَدىً دعَوت مُرَدّداً

    ليجيب منكَ فكان غير مجيبِ

    O she, I called repeatedly

    So you would answer me, but you did not respond

  12. ليتَ التفاتي في القَريض أعرتهِ

    حُسْنَ التفاتك رحمةً لكئيبِ

    If only my poem had shamed him

    The beauty of your attention is mercy to the sorrowful

  13. وذكرت من ضربِ المرفّل صيغةً

    بمرفّل من ذلكَ المسحوبِ

    I recalled the rhyme scheme of the perfumed poem

    With perfume made from that drawing out

  14. وعسى وعيدُك لا يضير فلم أجِدْ

    في البحر ضرباً مؤلمَ المضروبِ

    May your threat not harm me, for I have not found

    In the sea a blow more painful than the struck

  15. إنّ الزمانَ أصابني بزمانةٍ

    أبلت بتجديدِ الحَياة قَشيبي

    Time has afflicted me with its afflictions

    I have wasted, restoring life to my old age

  16. ففنيتُ إلّا ما تطالع فكرتي

    بالحذق من حِكَمي ومن تجريبي

    I am lost, except for what comes to my mind

    Of wisdom, experience, and experimentation

  17. ووجدتُ علم الشعر أخفى من هوىً

    لم تفشِهِ عينٌ لعين رقيبِ

    I found the science of poetry more hidden than a love

    No watchful eye revealed to another watchful eye

  18. ومدائحُ الحسنِ المبخّرَة التي

    فغمتْ بِطيبِ الفخر أَنفَ الطيبِ

    Eulogies of beauty perfumed

    Have choked the necks of the noble with incense

  19. ذو همَّةٍ بَذَلَ الندى وحمى الهدى

    بمهنّدٍ ذَرِبٍ بكفِّ ضروبِ

    A man of determination who gave dew and protected guidance

    With an Indian sword, striking blows

  20. حامي الحقيقة عادلٌ لا تتّقي

    في أرضه شاةٌ عداوةَ ذيبِ

    Guardian of the truth, just, in his land

    No sheep fears the enmity of a wolf

  21. ملكٌ غدا للعيد عيداً مُبْهجاً

    هُمُعُ العلى حوليه ذات ضروبِ

    A king who made the feast a joyous celebration

    The elite gathered around him in droves

  22. وَرَدَ المصلّى في جلال مُعَظّمٍ

    ووَقارِ مُختَشِع وسمتِ منيبِ

    He came to prayer in magnificent majesty

    And awe-inspiring composure and leaning posture

  23. بعرَمرَم رَكبت لإِرجالِ العِدى

    عقبانُ جوٍّ فيه أُسْدَ حروبِ

    Like eagles swooping down on the feet of enemies

    In a sky in which lions of war prowl

  24. عُقِدَ اللواءُ به على ذي هيبةٍ

    حالي المناسبِ بالكرامِ حسيبِ

    The banner was bound to one of awe

    Suitable to be honored, well-mannered

  25. والبُزلُ تجنحُ بالقبابِ تهادياً

    عَوْمَ السفينِ بشمألٍ وجنوبِ

    Doves circle the domes peacefully

    Floating ships with helms and sterns

  26. من كلّ رهوٍ في المقادة مشيُهُ

    نَقلَ الخطى منه على ترتيبِ

    From every towering camel saddle

    He conveyed their steps in order

  27. وكأنّما تعلو غواربها رُبى

    روضٍ بثجّاج الحيا مَهْضوبِ

    As if their ships sail on the pasture’s bloom

    An irrigated meadow of sprouting greenery

  28. ونَجائبٍ مثل القِسيِّ ضوامرٍ

    وَصَلَت بقطعِ سَباسِبٍ وسهوبِ

    With gazelles like virgins, whose running

    Reached, with twigs and acacia trees

  29. من كلّ مختصرِ الفلاةِ بمُعجلٍ

    فكأنها إيجازُ لفظِ أديبِ

    From every shortcut through the wilderness urgently

    As if it were the concise word of a literary man

  30. يرعى الفلا بفمٍ وترعى نحضَهُ

    من منْسَمٍ للمَروِ ذي تشذيبِ

    It grazes the horizon with a mouth, and its vigor

    Grazes from a carved outflow of water

  31. ومطلةٍ في الخافقين خوافقٍ

    كقلوب أعداءٍ ذَواتِ وجيبِ

    With a gaze between the eyelids like anxious hearts

    Of enemies, frowning and turning away

  32. من كلّ منشورٍ على أفق الوَغى

    مسطورُهُ كالمُهْرَقِ المكتوبِ

    From all who unfurl over the horizon of clamor

    His unfurling is like an unbound book

  33. جاءَتْ تتَرّبُهُ العتاقُ بنقعها

    والريح تنفضه منَ التَتريبِ

    The she-camels came to groom him with their chewing

    And the wind shakes off his dusty coating

  34. أو كلّ ثعبانٍ يُناطُ بقَسْوَرٍ

    بين البنود كمُحْنَقٍ وغَضُوبِ

    Or every serpent bound to a bracelet

    Among gems like a snarling, angry one

  35. صُوَر خُلِعْنَ على المَواتِ فخيلت

    فيها الحياة بسورةٍ ووثوبِ

    Forms were stripped bare in the desert, so I imagined

    Life in them with a shape and clothes

  36. وفغرنَ أفواهاً رحاباً عُطّلَتْ

    أشداقها من ألْسُنٍ ونيوبِ

    They opened their mouths wide but their jaws

    Were empty of tongues and fangs

  37. من كلّ شخصٍ يحتسي من ريحِهِ

    روحاً يحرّك جسمَه بهبوبِ

    From every figure that inhales from its scent

    A spirit that stirs its body with its blowing

  38. وترى بها العنقاءَ تنفضُ سِقْطَها

    في نَفْنَفٍ للحائماتِ رحيبِ

    You see the she-ostriches shake their plumage

    In a startled fluttering for the storks

  39. وَصلتْ ذُرى المَهدِيّتين وهاجرَتْ

    وكراً لها بالهِند غيرَ قريبِ

    The seeds of the two holy sites departed and migrated

    To nest far from it in India

  40. وصواهلٍ مثل العواسل عَدْوُهَا

    أبداً لحربِ عدوّك المحروبِ

    With steeds like virgins whose continuous battle

    Is ever against your battled enemy

  41. من كلّ وردٍ ما يشاكلُ لونَهُ

    إلا تورّدُ وجنةِ المحبوبِ

    Of every rose whose color rivals it

    Except the blush of the cheek of the beloved

  42. وكأنّما كَنَزَتْ ذخيرةُ عِتْقِهِ

    مِنهُ عبابَ البحر في يَعبوبِ

    As if the reserve of its freedom hoarded

    The gleam of the sea in its waves

  43. أَو أَدهمٍ داجي الإِهابِ كَأنّما

    صَبَغَ الغرابَ بِلَونِهِ الغربيبِ

    Or dark gray whose darkness dyes even

    The crow with its gloomy color

  44. أرساغُهُ دُرَرٌ على فيروزجٍ

    لان الصفا من وقعهِ لصليبِ

    Its leg ornaments are pearls on turquoise

    Gleaming for the touch of the cross

  45. يعدو ولا ظلٌّ له فكأنّهُ

    بَرق فَيا لِلبرقِ مِن مركوبِ

    It gallops and has no shadow, as if

    It were lightning! How fit for lightning is such a steed!

  46. أَو أَشهبٍ مثل الشهابِ ورَجمهِ

    شخصَ المريدِ بِمُحرقٍ مشبوبِ

    Or fiery like a shooting star and its barrage

    Assailing the follower with burning flames

  47. لا فرقَ ما بين الصباحَ وبينه

    إلّا بِعَدْوٍ منه أو تقريبِ

    No difference between dawn and it

    Except nearing and nearing at its approach

  48. أو أصفرٍ مثل البهار مغيّر

    بسواد عَرْفٍ عَن سَوادِ عسيبِ

    Or yellow like saffron, changed

    By the blackness of a forelock from the black of youth

  49. أو أشعلٍ للون فيه شُعْلَةٌ

    تُذْكى بريحٍ منه ذاتُ هبوبِ

    Or aflame with a color in which a flame kindles

    Fueled by its blowing wind

  50. وكأنّه مرداة صخرٍ حَطّهُ

    من عَلْوَ سيلٌ ماجَ في تَصويبِ

    As if it were a boulder hurled down

    By a violently surging torrent

  51. وكأنّما سَكِرَ الكميتُ بلونه

    فلَهُ بمشيتِهِ اختيالُ طروبِ

    As if the bay were drunk on its color

    Wandering tipsily in its gait

  52. وكأنّ حدّة طرفه وفؤادِه

    من خَلْقِهِ في الأذنِ والعرقوبِ

    As if the sharpness of its gaze and spirit

    Were created in the ear and tendon of its foreleg

  53. وجَلَتْ سروجُ الحَلْيِ فوق متونها

    سُرُجاً تألّقُ وهي ذاتُ لهيبِ

    The ornaments of its tack glittered over their saddles

    Like lamps shining with flames

  54. صَدَرَتْ منَ الذَهَب الثَقيلِ خِفافُها

    ونشاطها متخثّرٌ بلغوبِ

    Their lightness of fine gold sprang from them

    Vigorously adorned with trinkets

  55. وكأنّما من كلّ شمسٍ حلية

    صيغتْ لكلّ مُسَوّمٍ مَجْنوبِ

    As if a necklace were fashioned for every distinguished one

    Molded from every sun

  56. صلّيتَ ثم قفوتَ مِلّةَ أحْمَدٍ

    في نَحْرِ كلّ نجيبةٍ ونَجيبِ

    You prayed, then followed the way of Ahmad

    Slaughtering every honorable and respected one

  57. مِن كُلّ مُرتَفِعِ السنام تَحمّلتْ

    فيه المُدَى بالفرْيِ والتّرغيبِ

    From every high-saddled one, it carried

    Glory and temptation on it

  58. حيثُ الندى بعفاتِه مُتبرحٌ

    تُسْديه كفّ متوَّج محجوبِ

    Where dew in its plenty is bestowed

    By an outstretched, withdrawn palm

  59. يا من قوافينا مخافةَ نَقْدِهِ

    خَلُصَتْ منَ التَنقيحِ وَالتَهذيبِ

    O you whose rhymes fear his criticism!

    They are refined, scrubbed clean

  60. لَم يَبقَ في الدنيا مَكان غَير ذا

    يُجْري المديحَ به ذوو التأويبِ

    No place remains in the world but this one

    Where praise flows to the composers

  61. خُذها عَروسَ مَحافل لا تجتلى

    إلا بحلي علاك فَوقَ تَريبِ

    Take them, bride of gatherings, unveiled

    Except in your higher than high dress

  62. لَم يَخرج الدرُّ الَّذي زينت به

    إلّا بغوصٍ في البُحورِ قَريبِ

    The pearls that adorned you only emerged

    From diving deep in the nearby seas

  63. أَما بَناتي المفرداتِ فإنَّها

    في الحُسنِ أَشهر من بناتِ حبيبِ

    As for my vocabulary daughters, they

    Outshine beloved daughters in beauty

  64. لا ينكحُ العذراءَ إلا ماجدٌ

    تَبقَى بِعصمَتِه بقاءَ عسيبِ

    None shall marry the virgin but the glorious one

    Who remains in her chastity like an aloof gazelle

  65. وأنا أبو الحسناءِ والغرّاءِ إنْ

    أُغْرِبْ فما الإغرابُ لي بغريبِ

    I am the father of the beautiful and charming one if

    I am estranged, for estrangement is not strange to me

  66. يَدعو لكَ الحجّاجُ عند عجيجهم

    وصِياحِهِمْ بالبيتِ في ترجيبِ

    The Hajj pilgrims call for you in their talbiyah

    And cries of “Labbayk” in glorification

  67. من كلّ أشعثَ مُحْرِمٍ بلغ المُنَى

    بِمِنىً وأدركَ غايةَ المطلوبِ

    From every unkempt pilgrim who reaches Mina

    With wishes, attaining what is sought

  68. يبكي بمكّة والحجونِ مُرَدّداً

    وبيثربٍ يدعو بلا تَثريبِ

    Crying in Mecca and the Hajj crowds, repeating

    And in Medina invoking without cease

  69. فَبَقيتَ في العليا لتدميرِ العِدَى

    وغِنى الفَقير وفرجةِ المَكروبِ

    So you remained lofty to annihilate the enemy

    And enrich the poor and relieve the worried
